New courses were added in the Business Depan- ment. The faculty helped the students tremendously this year by acting as chaperones and class advisors. A new system ofperiods with a staggered lunch schedule was tried this year. A new course, Healt Occupations was also added to the cur¬ riculum. Tremendous school spirit was displayed at the pep fest and during the game against the Sargent Genual Cadets. Coming in undefeated, they kicked their way to a 6-2 victory of the Cardinals. During halftime of the game, Sylvia Dobler was presented with the original Homecoming Crown. Tammy Snyder, the Senior candidate, was crowned Queen. It was a well attended affair with the band Truk playing. The Student Council worked Friday and all day Saturday decorating the multi-purpose room. Brian Kendall and LuAnn Vasvick returned as reigning King and Queen to crown Senior Candidates, Kelly McCloskey and Vied Steinwand. Twenty members of the class comprised the cast of the play entitled Simple Simon,” under the direction of Mr. Cole. All profits from the play went to the drama fund. simple Simon, Herald and Queen Washerwoman Backstage Pieman and Guard Simon and King 16 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 1 -ACT PLAYS Three one act plays were produced by the EHS Drama Class on April 17. One of the three plays, entitled Brick and the Rose, was picked to go to the District Contest. The other two plays were entitled, The Color of the Sun is Forever or Easy on the Barley and French Toast. 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 17 INDUSTRIAL ARTS FAIR The Industrial Arts Fair was held on April 12. Staff members contacted all community sponsors to solicit their suppon. The staff, with the help of the l.A. Dept, and Brad Anderson, con¬ structed an advertising board which was hung in our gymnasium and in the fieldhouse during the District Tournament. 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 21 CARDINAL STAFF The Cardinal staff under the guidance of Mrs. Cole, worked hard this year. The monthly paper contained the usual sports, senior interviews, and group activities. Editors, Pam Brauer and Vickie Houghton added many special anicles to this years paper. E-CLUB A new football scoreboard was the main project of the Letterman ' s Club this year. Many hours were spent writing a new constitution for the club. 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 23 BAND The E.H.S. Band presented 5 concerts during the year: ELOE, the Fall Concert, the Christmas Concert, the Spring Concen, and the Spring ELOE. The bands also participated in the District Music Festival. 24 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 25 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] CHORU9 Soloist, Deborah Wilson, and the Triple Trio won star ratings at the district contest. At State, the Triple Trio won the highest award possi¬ ble, a star rating. STUDENT ASSISTANTS Student assistants for the year were: Eric Sand, Dennis Ketterling, Mike Betting, James Brauer and Tim Steinwand. They helped the coaches with the usual tasks of washing clothes, calling in scores, keep¬ ing score charts, and getting equipment ready for the games. 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 29 CHEERLEADERS The EHS cheerleaders were very active in promoting school spirit for football, wrestling, and basketball. They were busy with planning pep fests, making posters, and hosting Parents Night. They attended a cheerleading clinic in Jamestown. Wrestling 30 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] B Squad 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 31 8H0WTEAM 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] This was a year of changes for the showteam. They starred the year with many new members. Other changes from last year were new red and black pom-pons and new silver majorette uniforms. The activities included making up and learning new routines, prac¬ ticing at noon, performing at the halftime of football and basketball games and tournaments. F.H.A. This was a very active year for the FHA. Events included the district rally, Christmas carolling, sports night, and babysitting. FHA officers were: Pam Brauer, president: Kathy Webster, vice presi¬ dent; and Deb Durheim, reporter. Miss Evenson was the supervisor. 9TUDENT COUNCIL Student Council members were; Jim Kaiser, president; Kelly McCloskey, vice president; Gayle Merkel, secretary; Kim Morrison, treasurer: Mike Betting, ex-officio member; Deb Durheim, Vicci Stien- wand, Julie Kirkeby, Kevin Mangin, Brian Davis, Lori Nishek, Susan Koch, and Jerome Fredrick. They sponsored a Homecoming, Snoball, and Valentines Day Dance. The state convention in Minot was attended, and Ellendale was chosen as one of two schools to have a member at large on the state executive board. In June, Julie Kirkeby and Jim Kaiser attended the National Stu¬ dent Council Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. Many ideas were brought home and instituted from the conventions that were attended. 34 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] ATHLETICS 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] FOOTBALL The football team spent the year rebuilding and working with new plays in both offense and defense. The players worked hard but had fun doing it. Playing their last year of football were David Carlson, Kelly McCloskey, Owen Raugutt, Mike Betting, Sid Cayman, Lowell Gebhardt. The players appreciated the support of the student body throughout the year. They were Kelly McCloskey and Jim Kaiser. The winner of the Leland McClellan award was Kelly McCloskey. The most valuable line¬ man, Jim Kaiser; most valuable back, Mike Ketterling; most improved player, Brent Nell. Leading scorers were Kelly McCloskey and Mike Ketterling with 30 and 26 points respectively. Leading rushers were Mike Ketterling, 388 yds. and Kevin Mangin, 236 yds. Most of the passing was done by Scott Mangin who threw 32 for 78 for AVlo and 362 yds. On the receiving end was usually Kelly McCloskey who caught 22 passes for 290 yds. The regular season ended 10-10, while in district play, the Cards took 3rd by defeating Oakes. The year ' s highlight was defeating 8th ranked and undefeated LaMoure. The season ironically began and ended with overtime victo¬ ries. The team improved steadily throughout the season but ended up with a record of 1-10. Kim Monison led the A-squad scor¬ ing with 56 pts. They ended the season with a 7-5 dual mark and sent 4 wrestlers to the State Meet. Seasons highlights included a 59-5 win over Litch- ville and an 11 second pin by Brent Nell which set a state record. 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 47 Dean O ' Brien, Jim Kaiser, and Brent Nell were voted captains for the year. Voted Most Valuable Wrestler was Brent Nell and the Most Improved Wrestler was Wayne O’Brien. The Most Dedicated Wrestlers were Roger Zimmerman and Jim Kaiser. Brent Nell had the most pins during the year with 14. It was the last of everything - Homecoming, pep rallies, football games, sock- hops, girls ' and boys ' basketball, Sno-Ball, wrestling, sports night, tournaments, class meetings, FHA events, music contests, conceru, ELOE, and uack. The seniors squeezed In ACT tests. Career night, the Senior Class play, announcements, college and job applications, the prom and ban¬ quet, skip day. Feelings were mixed; relief, pride, sadness, fear, and joy. We had reached a goal in life and we have made memories that will last a lifetime. May 22 was the end of many cherished yesterdays and the beginning of many hopeful tomorrows. BUSINESS AWARDS: Claire Goddard received a Certificate of Exceillence and the Second Place Trophy for Typing I. Vickie Houghton received a Certificate of Excellence and the Second Place Trophy in Shorthand I. and a Certificate of Excellence in Typing II. Lori Mangin received a Certificate of Excellence in Typing 1. Pam Schock and E eb Tiegs received a Certificate of Excellence in Shorthand 1. Carla Diede, Barb Swartzentruber and Brent Houghton received Certificate of Excellence in Bookkeeping. Brent also received a Certificate of Excellence in Typing 11. SCHOOL PUBLICATIONS: Receiving award s for yearbook production were Craig Kendall as Editor and David Carlson as Business Manger. Receiving awards for the school paper were; Pam Brauer and Vickie Houghton as Co-editors, Shelrae Ostlund as Assistant Editor and Brad Anderson as Artist. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY: New memben were Mike Betting, Brent Houghton, Vickie Houghton, Keven Mangin, Jennifer Steinwand, Vicci Steinwand, Beth Randall, Deb Tiegt, Deb Marttila, and Julie Kirkeby. SPEECH AND DRAMA: Beth Randall received Second Place in Original Oratory and Fourth Place in Radio Broadcasting at the District Speech Festival, Dean O ' Brien received the Best Actor Award and Greg Peyton received Honorable Mention at tlie District Speech Festival. SPORTS: The Leland McClellan Football Award was given to Kelly McCloskey. The Calvin Schimke Basketball Award was presented to Todd Ost. Jim Kaiser received the Carl W. Lanz Wrestling Award. Kevjn Mangin was presented the Jim Pulu Tract Award. BAND AND CHORUS: The National Choir Award was presented to Vicci Steinwand. Chris Goddard received the John Phillip Sousa Award. Tammy Snyder, Jennifer Steinwand, Julie Kirkeby. Pam Brauer, Debi Durheim, Sherry Maier, Deb Mantila, Wendi Durbeim and Debra Wilson received pins for a Star Rating at State. Debra Wilson also received a Star Rating for her vocal solo. OTHER AWARDS: Tammy Snyder and Mike Betting received Danforth ' s I Dare You Award. The FHA Membership Award was given to Lori Mangin and Sheryl Ostlund. Deb Mantila was given the Family Leadership Award. Kim Morrison received the Constitution Award. Tlie North Dakou Know Your State Cenificate was awarded to Doug Ackermann. The Science Award was presented to David Carlson. The Class of 1976 was presented with the Spirit Award. The Megaphone Award ws presented to Renee Hatfield. 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale Norflf bakota] GRADUATION Forty-five students completed their high school education when they received their diploma from Mr. C. G. Kee, Ellendale School Board member. Dr. Merton Andresen, Jamestown College Provost, addressed the class, their friends and relatives. Student addresses were given by honor students, Elodie Kee and Vickie Houghton. 72 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] PROM In the Midnight Hour ' The Ellendale, Forbes, and Monango Juniors produced a very success¬ ful prom on April 26. The Juniors and Seniors danced to the music pro¬ vided by Transit. The Juniors also hosted the Seniors at a banquet before the dance. 74 1975 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] The Prom theme, ”In the Midnight Hour,” was symbolized by a mid¬ night park scene. The scene centered around a wishing well above which hung a rotating crystal moon in a star-studded sky.
