Students scrambled and rambled from one class to the next in a very hectic manner. This year was to be a very special though, to 39 students called seniors, as it began the beginning of the end of their school days in Ellendale. The faculty, although there were some new faces and different subjects, seemed to work together to get us students off the ground and on our way to learning all we should know by the time final exams take place. They seemed to enjoy the 6 period day, even though some had to teach straight through, because we could start classes later and get out earlier. The first day of school to some students, at least, seemed like a dream come true. This group of stu¬ dents would be known by the student body as Mr. Alger ' s football team. The reason I say dream come true, is that when school starts, the one-practice-a-day schedule begins to take effect, and the games are only a week apart. This years team took everything to heart of what Mr. Alger said, and proved on the field that they were true sportsmen and great competitors. Although the Cards lost their first two games of the season, they came back to win three straight by 30 points each. Then homecoming and the Ashley Aces. In what many view as the Cards best game of the season, we lost our homecoming game to the eventual champs, by a score of 14 - 6. We can be proud of Grant Crabtree though, who after intercepting a pass ran it back for 20 yards and a touchdown, being the only person in our conference up to then to score off Ashley. The loss of 9 members of the team though due to injuries and disciplinary action, saw our hopes of second shattered as we dropped our next 2 games. The football game wasn ' t all that took place on October 8 and 9 as the student body, after a week of hard campaigning, saw Lou Ann Voegeli crowned as the Homecoming Queen. Lou Ann ' s princesses were: Deb Hausmann Dahl, junior candidate, Alicia Hamar, sophomore candidate. Only Lou Ann and Alicia didn ' t move away, and graduated with the rest of us in May. This years paper staff had its problems when Becky Blumer, the editor, moved to Gwinner to join her parents. After a little searching however, Steve Michaelis, a senior, and Joel Jaharus, a junior, volunteered to become joint editor and The Cardinal, finally got off the ground with gossip, sports sections, editorials, jokes and most looked forward to, the senior interviews. The editors couldn ' t do it alone however, and they had much help from the rest of t he staff, and Mrs. Coleman and Mrs. Vix, the faculty advisors. A group of students very well thought of by the faculty is the student assistants. This group of students was willing to give up some of their free time to help the faculty either by student managering, which means washing all the dirty gym clothes and running errands, or taking care of the library to make sure everyone checks out their books and returns the magazines. There is also a student mailman which drove down to the post office every day and picked up all the schools mail. In the mail picked up by the student mailman were, over the year, three very ingenious and quite beneficial machines bought by the Lettermens ' Club. These machines are know to the students by the name of mini-gyms. These weight lifting devices helped our athletic programs immensely as all the participants in the sports built up their physiques and jumping abilities. On November 18 and 19, the juniors presented their play, Big Rock at Candy ' s Mountain. It was a modern play which played before capacity crowds both nights. The highlight of the play might have been when Mr. Fryslie was dragged out on the floor for a dance scene and proceeded to capture the crowd. All of this happened just a few days before the entire student body, with the exception of the seniors got their smiling faces photographed by Mr. Dwain Schilman for their ping pong photos. One of the most active groups or clubs in the high school is the girls F. H. A. Early in the fall one of its members, Vikke Lynde, became District President. Later in the year they hosted the boys Lettermen ' s club in a sports night at which games were played and refreshments were served. Spring brought their annual F. H. A. picnic at the park. During the winter months when the nights are long and the days are cold, there were many basketball games. This years team was small but very speedy. Mr. Hanson and Mr. Alger combined talents of themselves and players to form the A and B squads this year. 1972 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] The starters of the B squad sat the bench of the A squad, thus gaining valuable playing experience. Their records surprised everybody as they both came up with records of 16-6 and 16-4 respectively. While the boys were out on the floor running around, along the sidelines the cheerleaders were leading the crowd into a frenzy with their cheers and jumping. With three Sues, a Barb, and a Bonnie the experts on the sideline gave the players much enthusiasm and much confidence. They weren ' t the only ones entertain¬ ing the crowds though, because at halftime the showteam and pom pom girls went into their routines of twirling, jumping, kicking and pom pomming to music, that it provided quite a night of entertainment for the people of Ellendale and the visiting schools after it was all over. We all know though, that some boys are more atheletically gifted than others. For the boys that are not quite good enough to make the main teams, but just as much desire to, there is an intramural program set up. With the 7 Wonders winning the championship, their opponents, the Rowdies, the Bucks, and Red Deamons furnished just as much action and as much excitement as there was at the big games. The broadcasters might have even added a little more class to intramural the that the varsity lacked. Another big winter sport is wrestling. Any boy with desire can be a good wrestler, and with a 10 win, 4 loss record Mr. Peterson has many boys with this desire as proved by their records. Seven of our wrestlers represented us at state in which John Kaiser placed second. We also won the Groton Invitational in which John Kaiser was named most valuable wrestler. After a long winter , spring started the students going on many activities. The seniors presented their last play, and one of their last acts as a class on March 25. The play, Grandad Goes Wild was well received by an enthusiastic full-hous audience. An adlibbing scene by Ned Davis, while eating some cheese can still be looked back upon with a smile. While we are on the subject of plays, the one-act play directed by Mrs. Randall for the speech contest, was one of the best, even though it received second place. The play that beat us though, won the state one- act play title in Fargo later on. Joyce Holte placed second, by a flip of the coin, at the state meet and Tim Ost placed fourth in broadcasting. They will be back for another try next year. This years track team surprised everyone with the possible exception of Mr. Alger. We again won the conference crown as we beat Oakes by 3 points and the favored Ashley by 9. Jeff Rempfer and Tom Thompson, weniors, both qualified for state by placing second in the broad jump and 440 respectively. A person to look forward to in the future is Will Bemhagen, as he qualified for state by taking first in the mile and second in the 2 mile at districts. A golf team made its debut after a 3 year absence and placed 5 at the conference meet. With 3 of its members return ing, and a little more experience, they should do better next year. The band, under Kathy Crandall’s second year of direction, received the highest award given to any band when it was selected Honor Band for the District Concert. Ellendale collected the most l ' s in districts in both small and large ensembles. The chorus also received a 1. We received 5 l’s at state. The science club held its annual science fair on May 11. Rita Redlin entered her project on which she received a 1 at the state science fair in Grand Forks. This was only one day before the banquet, at which Congressman Art Link spoke. The prom, held a week earlier, was quite enjoyable. Podipto provided the music, and the decoration colors were pink, yellow, and orange. After much discussion by the senior class and the wrong decoration paper on the decorating day, the prom was presented quite nicely. The year is almost over now, as we come to the honors section. Many people received honors and awards on May 16 for which they worked hard and deserved greatly. The skip day was Friday the 19. Some of the senior class went to McNeils cabin for a picnic, others had track meets, and still others just stayed home. Sunday was bacculareate and then graduation, the final step by the seniors. Some seniors laughed, some cried, others just stared in shock, horror, and disbelief. And so, as the year has ended, so has our book. We on the annual staff hope in all sencerity that you enjoy it very much because hard work has been put into it. We hope you will use your annual in the future for your high school ref rence days, and that you enjoy this day by day or page by page style summary of it. 1972 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 65 Regional Center of Future; Ellendale 1972 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] American Legion Graham, J.
