E.H.S. opened its doors for the 1970-71 year with competent and dedicated instructors in every area of study. Home economics had been re-established after be¬ ing cut out of the curriculum the fall before. Another noticeable change was that several other fac¬ ulty positions were occupied by new faces. 4 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 5 Faculty... When large changes are made in the faculty, there are always a few moments of confusion during the first couple of weeks as both the teachers and the students learn just what is going to be expected of them. Besides accomplishing their classroom duties, the faculty could be counted on to help the students outside the classroom. They chaperoned school dances, and were us¬ ually the first to buy things that supported the individual classes. There was a peaceful atmos¬ phere in the building most of the time, as many of the students real¬ ized that they couldn’t change what they didn ' t like anyway. Everyone just made the best of what they had. 1 1 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Homecoming! This year ' s homecoming was one that displayed an abun¬ dance of school spirit. The school walls were almost com¬ pletely covered by posters that were either campaigning for a homecoming queen or pushing for a Cardinal victory. The real action started Friday when Cara Gulsvig was crowned by last year ' s queen, Kerri Voegeli. This event was followed by a snake dance and bonfire. On Saturday, the Cardinals smashed Enderlin by 48-0. The Third Stone provided music that night. 12 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Cardinal Staff Several issues of the Cardinal were produced under the direction of editors Cindi Bolliger, Maureen Han¬ sen, and Becky Blumer. The paper contained many varieties of news, and kept the students well informed on school activities. Original writings and poetry done by some of the students were also published in the pa¬ per. Mrs. Vix was the staff advisor again this year. The room was available to all study hall students who maintained a c ' average or better. The project turned out to be reasonably successful, even though some rules were broken occasionally. The student council also took part in planning next year ' s dress code. 16 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Jr. Class Play . . Under the direction of Mrs. Randall, the Junior Class put on a three act play entitled Our Town”, It was very successful and drew a capacity crowd. A new technique was employed as the acting was done in front of the stage with the audience sitting in a semi-circle around the actors. 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 17 Sno-Ball Everyone was full of Christmas spirit as they gathered for this annual event. The Sno-Ball was entitled, A Merry Christmas to All , and spon¬ sored by the student council. There were many parents present for the grand march and the crowning of the king and queen. Sophomore Ernie King was crowned king, and Cynthia Watkins Sand became the 1970 Sno-Ball queen. A large group of students turned out to dance to the music provided by the Third Stone later that evening. 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] After raising money in a variety of ways during the year, the Juniors successfully pro¬ duced the 1971 Junior-Senior Prom. The Hill top Minority provided the music. F. B. L. A. The Future Business Leaders of America raised money this year by handling the gate at the district basketball tournament and by sponsoring several bake sales. At the State Convention, R. Lee Ginsbach was elected Mr. North Dakota F.B.L. A. and Bernadette Mastel was elected the State Secretary. Two of the club’s members, Bernadette Mastel and Dennis Mark- uson, attended the National Convention in Miami, Florida. Top left: R. Lee Ginsbach, Bernadette Mastel, and Mr. Voegeli. It had a cast of 10 students and proved to be a very successful performance. The western comedy was about two young ladies trying to operate a dude ranch. 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 21 Red Bird Staff Editors: R. Lee Ginsbach Joe Law Business Managers: Dwain Nell Ned Davis As shown in the pictures, this year’s staff was very enthusiastic. Even though we didn ' t meet some of our deadlines, a lot of time and hard work was put into producing this book. All of us on the staff hope you enjoy it. 22 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Photographers: Tom Bunn Steve Bobzien Tim Jahraus Typist: Marilyn Mastel Writer: Keith Hafey Advisor: Mr. Voegeli The Red Bird Staff would like to express a grateful thanks to Mr. Voegeli, the advisor, for all the time and effort he has spent on the yearbook. After sponsoring a fun night for the E Club, they finished the year with a Spring picnic. 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 29 “E” Club All the members of the Ellendale Letterman ' s Club bought new coats and emblems this year. Almost half the cost was taken care of by the club, while each individual paid the rest. There was a banquet held in May to honor the EHS lettermen. Cheerleaders and parents were also invited to the banquet. 30 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Cheerleaders Cheerleading is one of the important factors in promoting school spirit at athletic events. The cheering and yelling lets the team know that their fans are backing them. A squad: (Top left) Susan Fryslie, Cara Gulsvig, Susan Wallace, Bev Lee, and Su¬ san Redlin. The graduation address was given by Dr. Eugene Hotaling, the Director of Counseling and Testing at Valley City State College. 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 33 Sports In education, the development of the body is as important as the development of the mind. This year’s Cardinal teams were football with a 4-4 record, basketball with a 17-8 record, wrestling with a 9-6 record, track, and girls ' track. The basketball team placed 1st in Districts and 2nd in Regionals, while the wrestling squad sent two wres¬ tlers to State. 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 35 Football ... Under coach Lee Alger, the Cardinals started prac¬ ticing for the 1970 season in mid-August. The team dropped their first two games to Frederick and Edge- ley. However, the Cards showed their fans that they were capable of playing some good football, and soundly defeated Kulm and Enderlin in their next two outings. The Ashley and Oakes games were heart- breakers for both the team and fans. The season closed with two more victories, giving the Cardinals an overall record of 4 wins and 4 losses. c Ellendale Opponent Frederick Edgeley Kulm Enderlin A shley Oakes Forman Lam oure 36 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Standing (L-R): Coach Alger, Mark Blumer, KirkHird, Grant Crabtree, Joe Law, Jeff Rempfer, Gary Linder, Steve Hastings, Mark Wickre, Ned Davis, Jim Wheelihan, John Kaiser, Tim Ost, Paul Worm, Gary Boekelheide, and Ass t Coach Johnson, Kneeling (L-R): Keith Hastings, Dennis Markuson, Keith Ha fey, Boyd Hagen, Bob Veland, Boyd Sand, Mike Vogel, Steve Fryslie, Dwain Nell, Mike Walock, Steve Bobzien, and Ralph Wallace. He set a new conference rushing record by fighting for 1376 yards in 209 carries, an average of nearly 6.6 yards per carry. Although the line wasn ' t al¬ ways as big as the opponent, they did a good job and threw a lot of blocks. The defensive standouts were Mike Walock, Boyd Sand, Ralph Wallace, and Steve Bobzien. Along with their teammates, they held the opponents to 80 points in 8 games. 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Top Left - the defense in action. They defeated Oriska in an exciting come-from-behind game, but lost their fire in the championship game with Wyndmere and had to settle for 2nd place. 42 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Coach Alger ' s B Squad was very powerful this year. They were known particularly for their strong defense, and compiled a win-loss rec¬ ord of 17-3. Of the 12 varsity wrestlers, only 3 of them were seniors. The team should be very powerful next year. Many of the meets were close and full of excite¬ ment. Wrestling proved to be very popular in the community, as there was a good turnout for every meet. 44 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Even though this was a building year, the cards compiled a record of 9-6, placed 2nd in conference, 8th in Regionals, and sent two wres¬ tlers to State, They were Randy Merkel at 98 lbs. with a record of 21- 1, and John Kaiser at 138 lbs. with a record of 17-3. Instead, the responsibility of winning is placed on each individual. Each man must have the determination to work at bettering himself. •i ' -Kv 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, E iguana A — rth Dakota] The Cardinal track team was very strong in field events this year. With Mike Walock throwing the javelin, shot, and discus, and Steve Fryslie in the high jump, pole vault, and long jump, the team compiled enough points to take first at the conference meet and tie for 2nd at the district meet. The stu¬ dents, faculty members, and towns¬ people must work together with the common cause of bettering our community. The spirit of the school and of the community are very much affected by the other. 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 67 Involvement Ellendale, a rural community with a population of 1800, is one of religious spirit and is composed of people who involve themselves in many activities. A rodeo, a harvest festival, and a sno-mobile derby were held this year. Everyone takes pride in their work and is always trying to better the community. Left center: The college rodeo. Right center: The athletic cage that was just constructed. Next page center: There is much interest in the college situation at a civic meeting. Next page (bottom right): action at the sno-mobile derby. 68 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] I Participation 69 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Construction As the youth are an important part of any com¬ munity, Ellendale ' s newest construction job provided a new recreational cage (bottom right). It is intended to provide the youth with a pastime as well as build their bodies. The cage consists of four basketball hoops and two full te nnis courts. 70 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] College Closes After much public debate and legislative action, the Ellendale Junior College was forced to close on June 1. It was a great blow to our community, as the college was responsible for providing much of the town ' s growth and prosperity. 1971 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 71 Community Sponsors American Legion Hird ' s, Inc.
