Whether through lecture, ex¬ perimentation, participation, or a little private tutoring, we learned basic skills and acquired an awareness of our sur¬ rounding world. The Faculty members often took time from their homes and families to chaperone, advise, or en¬ tertain us. 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 5 Faculty... As school opened it was evident that it was to be a year of new freedom and experimentation, as nearly all bells were abolished, study halls were informalized, and a new, more liberalized dress code was put into effect. A major obstacle during the year proved to be the continually changing teaching staff, causing some disrup¬ tion of the general learning process of the students. As the year began, the Home Economics and Industrial Arts Departments were discontinued because of lack of funds. Shop classes, however, were resumed sec¬ ond semester with Mr. Phil Trautman as instructor. It seemed that the teachers almost always bought a box of candy or a Christmas candle. They would come through and take part in a skit at a pep rally before a game to aid in firing up the student body. Occasionally, though, there would be a day that seemed a little longer than the ordinary, and seventh period you could catch an instructor catching a glance at her watch. Students found that the 1969-1970 school year was a period of time where less emphasis was placed on conform¬ ing in dress and behavior, but a year where more stress was put on learning. 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Homecoming! A new queen reigned after a week ' s campaign staged by the nominating classes. It was obvious that Queen Kerri was deeply touched as last years queen, Connie King crowned her before an anxious audience. A short social hour and a pep fest fol¬ lowed. On Saturday, a fired-up student body looked on as the tough Cardinal team was upset by Oakes. The Sunny Revolution played for the dance that evening. 12 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Cardinal Day Royalty: Queen Kerri Voegeli, Princesses Julie Gimbel (top rt.), Pat Veland (above), Kathy Wallace (left), and Kathy Morrison (bottom). 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 13 Staff Regroups The Cardinal was reorganized as a regularly produced paper this year under the Sr. and Jr. Editors John Wheelihan and Cindy Bolliger. Under the advisorship of Mrs. Vix, the staff ex¬ plored new areas in high school news reporting as well as all regular journalism. They were enrolled as members of the Northern Interscho¬ lastic Press Association. Standing (1-r): Darrell Vasvick, Cindy Bolliger, John Wheelihan, Jana Kirkeby, Mrs. Vix, advisor. Basically, it performed as well as its predecessors, sponsoring dances and trying to work for a generally apathetic and self-contented student body. One thing worth noting though, is the discussions in which members of the council met with Administration and School Board members, the result being a much wanted liberalized dress code. Lee Ginsbach, Tom Bunn, Alicia Hamar, Ned Davis, Joyce Holte, Jim Wheelihan and Mr. Bertsch as advisor. 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 17 Sno-Ball This year’s Sno-Ball, entitled ’Twas the Night Before Christmas”, was again a success as many students showed up to dance to the music of the Third Stone. The big surprise of the evening was the crowning of Susan Redlin, a freshman, as Sno- Ball queen while senior Dale Davis was crowned king of this annual event. The Sno-Ball was one of the dances sponsored by the student council. THE 18 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Time of the Season After a year of wondering whether or not the prom would be a reality or not, and a little support from the Seniors, the Juniors succeeded in producing the 1970 Junior- Senior Prom. 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 19 F.B.L.A. The Future Business Leaders of America was a new organization this year. Finances were raised to pay part of the cost of attending the State Convention by handling the gate at several basketball games and the district tournament. At the conven¬ tion, they succeeded in having R. Lee Gins- bach elected as first alternate voting dele¬ gate to the National Convention in Phila¬ delphia, Pennsylvania. 20 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] All Because of Agatha All Because of Agatha” was put on by a cast of 10 before a capacity crowd. It was a story about the meddlings of a witch in present day Salem and her destruction. 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 21 Red Bird Staff Editors: Business Managers: Steve Blumer R. Lee Ginsbach Cheryl Gayman Dwain Nell A less formal construction and a little more copy are the basic changes in this year ' s production. Many people, more than are listed, put in a lot of time in developing a book we hope you will enjoy. 22 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Photographers: Assistants: Typists: Advisor: Tom Bunn Steve Bobzien Frank Kaiser Darrell Vasvick Julie Gimble Chris Rempfer and others Mr. Voegeli The pictures on these pages show the editor and most of his staff in their most often assumed positions. The club ' s main project this year was a faculty-businessman basketball game which was handily wan by the faculty. The proceeds from this game went toward the new scoreboard. 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 31 Cheerleaders Cheerleading is acknowledged as a necessity in the preservation and pro¬ duction of school spirit. The Cardinals, under coach Lee Alger, were again a con¬ ference power. Beginning practice in the middle of August, the Cards decisively set back their first three opponents. They then fought hard to defeat Ashley before being upset by Oakes. After losing to Sargent Central, they again began their winning ways to defeat LaMoure and Edgeley, and all that was left were memories. Top, at Oakes game. Middle, defense at work in Forman. Probably the most per¬ sonally demanding high school sport, along with wrestling, it takes real determination on the part of the individual to be a winner. 50 1970 Redbird [High School Wnnual, Ellendale North Dakota] Followed a little closer by fans this year, the track team was a little more of a conference threat. Show¬ ing their strength in field competition primarily, led by weight men Walock and Nell and high jumper Steve Fryslie, the team placed 2nd in district and 3rd in the conference. They also won the Forbes Inv. and their own invitational meet as well as participating in larger meets in the area. Qualifying for the state meet were Mike Walock and Steve Fryslie, juniors. Walock placed third in the shot put for Ellendale ' s only points. 52 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] With the hope of possibly qualifying for the state meet, several seniors doing so in the past, many youthful members joined the girls ' track team, but the team never got off the ground. The team got good support from the school and community. 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 53 Classes 54 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 55 Page 56: Top; the marching band. The spirit of the school and of the community are very much affected by the other. 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 73 Construction Ellendale, a community with a junior college and a population of a little over 1600 people, is a community of religious spirit and a feeling for civic improvement. Organizations such as the Civic Assc. and Jaycees sponsored such things as the Har¬ vest Festival and Sno-mobile derby. The college held two NIRA rodeos and citizens put on an Easter Cantata. All worked towards more civic pride and interest. Above: one of several new houses built this year. Above right: a calf roper at the Dustie Round-up. Right and far right: pictures from the Harvest Fes¬ tival barbecue. Page 75 top: two leaders in the Sno-mobile derby. Top right: the demolition derby during the Harvest Festival. Center: members of the community choir during the Easter Cantata and far right are several interested listeners. 74 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] and Involvement 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 76 Government This year was an election year in Ellendale. Nearly all incumbents found they were running against a capable opponent, and vacated seats were contested by more capable candidates. This was a little unusual as on the average not so many are in¬ terested in holding positions of government in our community. One bill worth noting that was turned down by voters was a mill levy increase to go for educational purposes. It fell short of the 60 °]o needed by 2%. 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Disaster One of the greatest calamities the city of Ellen- dale has ever seen occurred in January of this year. Two of the oldest buildings in Ellendale, the two major buildings of the college, burned in the early morning. The blaz«, seen from miles away, could only be contained that freezing morning as the fire fighters worked to save the rest of the buildings in the area. The college has had a history of setbacks in its attempt to become a larger, more effective college Boasting one of the top I. A. departments in the state, the college had just been changed from a growing four year college to a smaller jr. college when the fire hit. Whether this will mean the end of the college, the end of the city, the college being its major industry, only time will tell. 1970 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale No rth Dakota] 77 Judex Ackermann, Clara; 68 Ackermann, Sarah; 14,15,20,21,30,53,58 Alger, Sherry; 30,32,64 Anderson, Jenny; 64 Anderson, Mark; 15,68,24 Baier, Roger; 10,33,58 Barton, Vicki; 28,68,30 Blumer, Mark; 18,24,45,68 Blumer, Rebbecca; 14,27,30,53 Blumer, Stephen; 17,20,21,22,23,28,29,31,33,34, 39,58,59 Bobbe, Ellen; 4,24,28,34,58,62 Bobbe, Mary; 28,64 Bobzien, Steve; 15,28,29,39,48,51,54,64 Bobzien, Jill; 24,27,28,30,68 Bolliger, Cindi; 14,24,28,30,34,64 Brandenburger, Dana; 58 Breske, Susan; 25,28,66 Breske, Tim; 20,64 Bunn, Tom; 17,34,48,64 Coleman, John; 15,31,68,51 Crabtree, Grant; 31,45,68 Crabtree, Tom; 15,31,39,44,64 Dahl, Cindy; 17,20,27,34,58 Dathe, Kenneth; 31,48,64 Davis, Dale; 3,14,15,18,20,21,22,29,31,33,58 Davis, Doug;15,20,28,29,31,39,58,63 Davis, Joan; 20,58 Davis, Ned; 17,18,31,39,46,48,66,67,68 Delzer, Delwyn; 58 Dess, Wesly; 68 Dobler, Gayle; 66 Dobler, Vaughn; 64 Dunn, Cecile; 21,30,53,59 Dunn, Mary; 68 Dunn, Thomas; 67 Eberly, Mary Ann; 66 Freih, Julie; 64 Fryslie, Steve; 36,31,41,44,51,52,64 Fryslie, Susan 27,30,32,53,68 Fuchs, Marvin; 68 Fuchs, Roy; 64 Gayman, Cheryl; 4,21,22,23,28,34,59 Gebhardt, Elaine; 28,30 64 Gebhardt, Jerome; 48,59 Gebhardt, LaPalma; 24,28,30,66 Gimble, Jean; 28,30,32,66 Gimbel, Julie; 11,13,16,17,23,28,34,59,62 Gimble, Pat; 28,30,68 Ginsbach, R.
