The six vacancies were filled by exceptionally well-qualified personnel. Enthusiasm was high, with all members serving as advisors. The faculty story of the year was the announcement that Mr. and Mrs. James Schauer had accepted positions at Jamestown College and would be leaving this year after six years in Ellendale. 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 5 «p Mr. Ambert Babcock Jr. High English Mrs. Theresa Begin Jr. High Homeroom Mr. Delbert Bertsch Principal Mrs. Emma Blattner Home Economics 6 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Mr. La Roy Bobzien Guidance, Psychology, Sociology Mrs. Myrtle Woodward Secretary Maintenance Workers Bernie Schaefer, Mrs. Ruby Gerling, Robert Byiners Mr. J. Co-curricular activities promoted interests in music, acting, writing, and leadership. In short, something for everyone. But as the above picture indicates, students also found some use for books. 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] It began Friday night with the coronation of Connie. She laughed, cried, and smiled ... in that order! Then the human snake dance wound its way to the bon¬ fire. We lit it this year without any assistance” from college students. Even so, the fire seemed to be out too soon, as was the fire in the cheering section. On Saturday the fire was in the Cards as they stomped Forman 33-6. Halftime entertainment was a brief appear¬ ance by the royalty and the show-team. The Victory Ball, with the sound of the Dischords , was the last feature of the weekend event. The event known as . . . Homecoming! 12 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] student council The Council was the subject of some controversy this year and the result can only be good. Through constructive criticism some of the apathy has fallen away from both members and students. This was evidenced by a constitutional revision. The main point would allow Council members to share, through an advisory capacity, in the preparation of the Stu¬ dent Handbook. Other prominent points dealt with election reforms and an honor system for evaluating members. One small but significant improvement, allowing girls to wear culottes at athletic events, has already become effective. The organization sponsored three dances this year, as well as a talent show and a Thanksgiving turkey drawing. The advisor and officers are shown in the front row; advisor, president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer. 14 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] student assistants H Much credit should go to those who took an ac¬ tive role in assisting the administration and faculty. By no means sidewalk superintendents , they actually participated in school operation. The main groups were office aides, library assistants, and student athletic managers. One of several individuals who worked in other areas was Charles Sizer, a second-generation mail- carrier. 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 15 Juniors’ satire: The Mouse That Roared” Leonard Wibberly ' s well known comedy was directed by Linda Smolnisky with assistance from student director Pat Veeland. The cast of 33 played a single night performance to a sellout crowd. 16 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] District Speech Contest One-Act Play t Seniors’ mystery Murder Takes The Veil” 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 17 ♦ ♦ Sno-ball The Sno-Ball was one of the two major dances of the year, the minor ones being Homecoming and Halloween. There must have been something to the theme of Winter Enchantment for this traditionally poorly attended affair drew a good crowd. Under the sponsorship of the Student Council, the Oischords played. Seniors again dominated the royal party. 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Pathway to Summer” The juniors hosted the class of 69” for a night of activities including a banquet and prom. A gazebo (whatever that is) was the feature of the colorful decorations. The UND-EB stage band provided music. 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 19 Montliy sports activities were the main con cern of the Girls Athletic Association. For the second year they hosted the Lettermen in an evening of fun and food. FHA The Future Homemakers of America carried out a long list of activities related to home and community living. Among these were a faculty supper, a tobogganing trip, and a basketball game between the 2nd and 3rd grades. Poor weather interrupted plans for a delegation to the Fargo convention. The club advisor and officers are shown in front. 20 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] To give identity to their organization, the Lettermen bought sweaters. Other than the banquet sponsored by the Civic Association the most outstanding occurrence was the death and replacement of the popcorn machine. The three club officers arc shown on the far left in the front row. Club 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] yearbook staff editors Garry Nelson Steve Blumer typist Jane Graham misery it forgetting to order your YEARBOOK early I I I Several notable improvements were made in year¬ book production this year. The general format of the book was modernized. A special section on school- community co-operation was added to replace the less attractive advertisements. Full color endsheets were used for the first time. Photography emphasized realism and was almost entirely student work. Staff members attended the fall workshop and the N.I.P.A. convention in the spring. This was the first year of membership in the Northern Interscholastic Press Association. 22 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] photographers business managers advisor Greg Gackle Greg Stintson Charles Sizer Cheryl Gayman Mr. Voegeli 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 23 band This year’s band, directed by Mr. Powers, again reached the high echelon of performance as¬ sociated with EHS. Individuals and small groups did a fine job of representing the school in the District Music Contest, with the band receiving a I rating. Many advanced to the State meet and all gained valuable experience. 24 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] The band presented several fine concerts and were present in many matching events. Among the concerts given were the fall concert and cafe concert. The band marched in the Northern State and U.N.D. - E.B. homecoming parades. 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 25 vocal groups The concert choir and the girls chorus were the two principle groups of singers. Triple trio, girls trio, and mixed quartet made special appearances during the year. The folk singers were re¬ organized and became a popular group for talent shows and bas¬ ketball halftimes. Soloist Bert Schmidt performed at special occasions including graduation. 26 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] honors 1 969 Delegates A student poll showed the consensus to favor continuation of the National Honor Society. Four seniors and four juniors were initiated as new mem¬ bers. Two girls and four boys were selected as dele¬ gates to Girl ' s and Boy ' s State. The groups were sponsored by the American Legion Aux. and the American Legion respectively. A special individual achievement was made by Donna Monteith as a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist. 1968 Delegates 28 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] graduation With the conferring of diplomas by School Board President. Merwin Mor ehead, fifty EHS students completed .one phase of their education. Luther Bjerke, from UND, addressed the class with his vision of M Acres of Diamonds in North Dakota. Nearly half of the rather short speech was devoted to Norwegian jokes. Lorelei Hamar gave the student address. Art Dunn and Nancy Iszler were named as Randall scholarship recipients. 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 29 The life of a cheerleader can be pretty wild. From a freezing foot¬ ball game to basketball fever, it is an exciting - sometimes dangerous - experience. But, for the sake of school spirit, it is well worth the effort. 30 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] athletics 32 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] To say the least, the year ' s sports story was highly unusual. The football, basketball, and track expectations were each marred by last minute let downs. Yet the value of athletic competition was not lost even in defeat. Wrestling gained a long-awaited spotlight when Ellis Nell became EHS ' s first state champion. 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 33 Conference Co-Champs... Statistics were the best evidence of the season ' s success. Scoring and yardage records were broken. Four individuals, Barbone, Cackle. Sizer, and Voorhecs tied for the scoring lead with 31 points. Seven of Cackle ' s points were scored on P.A.T. ' s. Rushing leaders were Voorhecs (570 yards), Walock (299), and Marvick (265). Cackle threw 68 passes for 34 completions. His leading receivers were Sizer (537 yards on 15 passes), Van Carvcn (228 on 9), and Voorhecs (72 on 5). Defensive standouts were Barbone (238 points), Kaiser (205), Heitman (170), Sizer (164), Wallace (157), and Rochl (134). 34 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] The 68 football season was unique in many ways. Both coaches, John Higgs and Wayne Nielson, were new. There were several new transfer students. But most important, the attitude was new--an attitude of competition and the will to win. And we did win. The high-point of the season came early, as we defeated Enderlin and Oakes. Guided by cap¬ tains Sizer and Gackle, Ellendale again became a conference football power. The year ended on a sour note with a one-point defeat by Kulm. It could not detract, however, from the accom¬ plishments-- a 7-1 record and a share of the Conference title. 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 35 ... in action. Coach Peterson could not develop a strong match team and accepted a 7-7-1 meet record. The bulk of the team was inexperienced; only five mem¬ bers gained double figures in the wins column. Injuries were the biggest drawback throughout the season. Frank Kaiser and David Gehring were side¬ lined for the entire year. Mike and Dan Vogel were injured prior to the tournaments, Dan with an 11-1 record up to that point. The team placed 6th in Conference and 3rd in Regionals. 38 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] EHS 26 10 29 23 24 29 31 18 40 la 27 30 15 26 21 Opponent 27 La Moure 30 ' Sargent Central 21 Linton 26 Oakes 24 La Moure 19 Ashley 23 Napoleon 25 Oakes 8 Edgeley 31 Enderlin 17 Ashley 16 Zealand 29 Sargent Central 22 Linton 29 Oak Grove wrestling spirit 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 39 The season did prove to be one of the best in school history. With only four qualifiers at the state tournament the wres¬ tlers captured second place with a total of 34 points behind St. Mary ' s of New England with 51 points. While Randy Merkel did not advance in the tourney, Vic Watkins and Art Dunn each placed second in their respective weight classes. Dunn was forced to default in the final match because of a rib injury. Ellis Nell, in the 165 pound division, became the first EHS wrestler to win a state championship. Approximately 200 fans turned out to greet the team as they returned from Minot. The Cardinals, under the coaching of James Schauer for the last year, almost won it all. The Cards, however, were denied as they were defeated 47-46 by Oak Grove, who went on to capture the State Class B title. In other action during the regular season, the Cardinals defeated both Hebron and Wolford, who placed second and third, respectively, in the State tournament. The season was termed a great success, though, as the Cards captured the Conference and District championships on their way to a 24-1 record. Notably this was the third consecutive Conference title, and the fourth straight District title for the Ellendale Cardinals. An added highlight of the season came when Charles Sizer was voted to the All-State basketball second team. 44 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 45 EHS 36 47 67 65 61 52 45 36 54 54 45 41 45 50 54 49 35 48 Opponent 19 St. Kates 22 La Moure 27 Kulm 52 Edgeley 37 Ashley 32 Forman 36 Oakes 33 Kulm 41 Edgeley 47 Forbes A 32 Ashley 33 Forman 51 Forbes A 54 Oakes 61 Enderlin 45 Edgeley 47 Oakes 40 La Moure Third Place Kulm Invitational 46 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Mrs. Schauer ' s girls participated in only two meets. Steve Fryslie (high jump) and Mike Walock (shot put) qualified for the state meet. Students, faculty, and townspeople were given a unique opportunity for cooperation during the self-evaluation of the school system for North Central Accrediting. Com¬ mittees were chosen from the entire school district for the self-study which is made every seven years. School Board members shown with the administrators are C.G. Kee, June Holte, Gene Collett, Merwin Morehead, and Melvin Martinson. 68 1969 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] The new heating plant, financed by a bond issue, went into its first year of operation.
