Redbird 1968 1968 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Ellendale High School Ellendale, North Dakota Yearbook Staff Senior Editor Glen Bolliger Junior Editor Garry Nelson m Sports Editor Rick Bollinger Senior Business Manager Kevin Hird Junior Business Manager Charles Sizer Typist Pat Lavtt Advisor Mr. Voegeli Photographers Greg Gackle Greg Stinson A school building is constructed of steel and cement, strong and per¬ manent, but it is designed to accommodate an ever-changing flow of students. Year after year buses empty their loads each morning, and students stream in waves into the hallways and classrooms. To the rhythm of bells, tides of people wash in and out of the rooms and corridors and finally back to the buses, leaving the building empty. Carl Sandburg in his poem Skyscraper says, It is the men and women, boys and girls so poured in and out all day that give the building a soul of dreams and thoughts and memories. As each in¬ dividual forms a part of the mass, so each personality contributes to the whole of Ellendale’s soul-that abstract thing we call school spirit. The Redbird Staff presents this abstract collection of people and events which filled our school year. 1968 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] Table of Contents Dedication 4 Faculty 5 Activities 11 Sports 33 Classes 48 Advertising 65 Dedication Principal Gary Carr, is a man EHS has been proud to have as a member of its faculty for the past year. Clara Curtis and Inez Cameron have it all planned for Steve Cameron to marry Clara when he returns from the service. Everyone is happily anticipating the marriage: Clara, the one time girlfriend who never gives up; Steve’s domineering mother; his fickle sister Virgie; and most of all Mrs. Sorenson, the town ' s major busy¬ body. Unfortunately The Groom Said ’No’. ’’ Steve has met an army nurse and in order to delay Clara and see the nurse, Shirley Anderson, he puts on a machine-gun act convincing Mother and Clara he needs profes¬ sional help. Shirley arrives and from that time on she and Clara fight to the finish. Thanks to Pat, Steve’s daring sister, Shirley is present when Clara indignantly introduces her new love, chicken farmer Ed Smith. The old ladies believed they were doing a great deed to society, but their foster son, Mortimer Brewster didn’t. Under this array of innocence and mur¬ der, a cast of thirteen per¬ formed. Included in this cast were: Aunt Abby and Aunt Martha--Jane Graham and Colleen Johnson, Mortimer Brewster--Kirk Redlin, Elaine Harper--Lorilie Hamar, Jona¬ thon and Dr. Einstein--Greg Stinson and Donald Dathe, Teddy--Kyle Hydenriech, Rev. The teams of late have achieved statewide recognition. Coach James Schauer has done much to achieve this high caliber of basketball and the 1968 Redbird Staff would like to call atten¬ tion to this feat. Mr. Schauer has, in five years at Ellendale, won four District Championships, two Southeast Con¬ ference Titles, one Regional Championship, and one North Dakota State Class B Basketball Title. Coach Schauer’s teams have only once finished lower than second in conference action, compiled an over-all 15-1 District Tourney record, placed second in Region 1 three times, and established a 51-2 record over the past two seasons. Mr. Schauer ' s record in basketball competition is not his only accomplishment, however. He has built courage, determination, respect, and PRIDE in every athlete he has coached. Our congratula¬ tions go out to Coach Schauer and we wish him the best of luck next year. 1968 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] 37 Cards Gain Regional Finals The 68 Cardinals were challenged from the outset by the accomplishments of the preceding year. Even though the over-all win record was broken after the Sargent Central contest, the Pride of EHS was deter¬ mined to establish its own winning string, which ended at 22 victories. The Cards played some ex¬ cellent basketball during the regular season, notably the contests against St. Catherines and the first Edge- ley encounter. After battling its way through the dis¬ trict tournament the Cards defeated Litchville in the first round of the regional. The season ended ab¬ ruptly the next night when the 1 rated Central Class squad, who went on to win the State Class B Cham¬ pionship, overpowered the Ellendale quintet in a dramatic repeat of the previous year ' s contest. The personal pride, determination, and drive which ef¬ fected the 23-2 seasons record is a tribute in itself to coach and team. 38 1968 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] NAME REBS.
