J 1952 Ellendale High School Yearbook - Coleman Museum 2017 155A SHIP K in sO cn in An eventful day, September 7, 19l|8, saw thirty- three starry-eyed freshmen begin their four years of high school. We elected as our class officers: Marilyn Neumann, president? Bob Higgs, vice president; and Esther Schaller, secretary- treasurer. Mr. Shelver was our class advisor. We all pitched in and helped with the annual Oompah. Beverley Gerdon and Bob Higgs were our candidates for queen and king. We journeyed to Weber ' s Gulch for our class picnic and spent the entire day dating pickles and ice cream and racing up and down the hills. After a summer vacation thirty-three sophomores proudly ascended the stairs to begin the first of their three years in Senior High. Our class officers that year were: Esther Schaller, president; Peggy Hatfield, vice president; and Joyce Evans, secretary- treasurer. On October lU these thirty-three unhappy sophs were officially initiated into Senior High by the mighty seniors. We picnicked at Rich- mond Lake. By the time we became juniors, several of our classmates had dropped out and our class enrollment went down to twenty-eight. Our class officers were: Jack Haider, president; Grace Bell, vice president; and Marilyn Neumann, secretary- treasurer. Miss Onsrud was class advisor. On December 1 we successfully presented the junior class play, Old Doc . March 29 brought the Junior Frolics. This rollicking show was entirely under the able juniors ' direction. All of these events led up to the really big show- the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, which took place May 15. “Hawaiian Cruise was our theme; and as we stepped of f the gangplank of the E.H.S Cruiser into Hawaii, we were welcomed by the music of John Taylor ' s orchestra. On September 1 , 195 1, we entered into the doors of E.H.S. to begin our last and most eventful year. We elected as our class officers: Marilyn Neumann, president; Esther Schaller, vice president; and Grace Bell, secretary- treasurer. Mr. Ingvalson was our advisor. This year the class took over the responsibility of editing the Cardinal. -3 1952 Ellendale High School Yearbook - Coleman Museum 2017 536 155A SHIP October 12 brought our first official senior duty- sophomore initiation. Then came the Senior Girls ' Speech Program, in which all the senior girls took part. Teen Canteen was very successful with Marilyn Neumann, president? Lawrence Beaver, vice president; Beverley Gordon, secretary-treasurer; and Betty Houghton and Roger Kendall as student council members. During the year the seniors participated in many band, choral, and dramatic activities. The following seniors were initiated into the Keystone Society: Marilyn Neumann, Grace Bell Peggy Hatfield, Shirley Vick, and Herbert Wagner. Esther Schaller was initiated in her junior year. On April 30 we presented our senior class play, The Imaginary Invalid . On May 23 we graduated, ending our history in E.H.S. Now we, toe graduates of 1952, would like to express our gratitude for the sympathy, understanding, and help that were given to us by our teachers throughout our twelve years at E.H.S. CM I tr 1952 Ellendale High School Yearbook - Coleman Museum 2017 536 1 5 5A SHIP PiofeAecty The calendar said that the year was 1962. It was ten years since the class of 5 2 dispersed ways. I wondered what had happened to my old classmates and decided how nice it would be to find out. Going into Ellendale I met two of my former classmates. After telling them of my plan, K ndel Cofell, Lawrence Beaver, and I, Betty Houghton]; started out in Kendel ' s new Rolls Royce to see what the world had done to our classmates. Kendel ' s Rolls Royce barely fitted into the metropolis of Winship, but we managed to stop and see Roger Kendall, who is now leader of the Winship first grade rhythm band. Traveling farther south and west our next stop was Cheyenne, Wyoming, where we were attracted by a rancher who looked as if he had gone ber- serk. Much to our surprise it was Bob Higgs, whose wife had just presented him with a pair of redr-headed twins. Unfortunately Bev was still in the hospital and we were unable to see her. After two flat tires we hit Seattle, and we took an afternoon off to watch TV at one of the local cafes. A handsome, smiling face stared out at us. Who should it be but our ever loving jokester Jack Hammy Helder. And get this Jack was announcer for Campbell ' s Soup ' .!! The next number on the TV show was Kenny Dockter, who just made a hit with his latest recording, Bawl . Leaving TV behind us we strolled out into the streets where we heard cries of k Extra l Extra 1 Deciding to spend a nickel, we bought a paper. These headlines n struck usr Stanley Kern, head man of the Alcatraz Ball and Chain Gang, had just in failed at his last attempt to swim to the main land. Leaving Stanley to his woe, we moved in on Southern California. As it was such a hot day we went to the beach for a swim. Wasn ' t that a familiar figure over there? Why it was Herb Wagner modeling men ' s bathing suits. After a short chat with Herb, we journeyed on. Our destination was Dallas, Texas, where we met Marilyn Neumann. Famous for her trip to the moon, Marilyn was now preparing for her flight to Mars. By the way, Marilyn had developed a very distinctive Southern accent. She informed us that if we went down to the Power ' s Department Store, we would find Verna Kosel modeling the poodle hair cut. o - Motoring on to Tampa, Florida, we found Bob Schonberger lounging in his club. u- He was slightly down hearted as his eighth wife had just divorced him. Bob had reached fame as an author; his latest book was How To Keep A Wife . Going on we cruised by Atlanta, Georgia, where we noticed that the Mrs . America contest was going on. We stopped in time to see our Lorna Maack crowned j Mrs. America . We talked to Lorna for a few minutes and she told us that •1952 Ellendale High School Yearbook - Coleman Museum 2017 JoAnne Heine is now A1 Capp ' s model for the wolf gal. Our next stop was the nation s capital where we found Peggy Hatfield as North Dakota ' s first Lady Senator. Grace Bell was visiting with Peggy. Grace was a famous hillbilly singer on station PU in Tennessee, starring with The Churchkey Five New York was next on our list. Here we found Shirley Vick, the leading romantic actress on Broadway. Shirley informed us that Joyce Evans was her roan- mate and worked as hostess at the Stork Club. Passing the Madison Scpare Garden, we decided that as long as we had a few extra minutes we would go in. There we saw DeLores Nitschke, who had succeeded Barbara Ann Scott as figure skating champion. Traveling on to Boston, we stopped at Vassar College, where we saw a familiar figure on the campus . It was none other than Norman Aman, who was professor of mathematics at the college. We talked with First for a few minutes before we started on our way to South Bend, Indiana. Here we found Don McShane, who is coaching football at Notre Dame. By the way Don talked, he was trying to raise his own football team. Homeward bound we stopped in Chicago for supper at the Argon , where we found Alfred Trautman. Alfjr , turning to music for his career, had succeeded Ralph Flanagan. Traveling farther west, we came to Minnesota, where we found Esther Schaller Griffin. After tiring of sailing the wide blue yonder, she and Marvin settled down to farming. We hated to think of our trip ending, but we were now on our way home. We left Kendel in Aberdeen where he has succeeded his father-in-law as manager of the Capitol Lounge. After our long, but wonderful trip. Fat and I were happy to see ELlendale. Fat rushed right down to the Thompson Yards Lumber Company, which he now runs, to complete another baby crib— not for sale. He and Marilyn have quite a going concern. Now, thinking it was time to go home, who did I see but Newt Davis. Newt is now farming his father ' s place and has become very success- ful. The trip was now over, but our minds were still on our old classmates. Somehow we would see each other again soon. 1952 Ellendale High School Yearbook - Coleman Museum 2017 ECON 536 155A SHIP (ZtAM 7 vm We, the Seniors of Ellendale High School, being of superior minds and possessing excellent physically fit bodies, do hereby will our glorious attributes to those who shall remain after our departure to brighter horizons. The play centered around Argon, the imaginary invalid, who thinks he has diseases too numerous to mention. His wife is trying to get all his money from him, and his doctors add to his woe by dreaming up new diseases for him every time he thinks he has a headache. Finally, Argon wakes up to the fact that he really isn ' t an invalid, and decides to become a doctor, to try to help people like himself, who think they are going to die any minute, yet aren ' t really ill. The play was written by Moliere, the greatest French playwrite of the seventeenth century. Much credit should be given to the director. Miss Mina C. Received letters in 1951 During the first week of school the football boys, under Coach Clifford Isachsen, eagerly set to work with hard grueling practices, in preparation for their initial game of the 1951 season. The team selected Bob Higgs and Don McShane as their co-captains. The first game of the season saw the Cardinals appear on their field against the Enderlin Eagles, who handed the Cards a 19 to 9 defeat. It was during this game that Bob Higgs was seriously injured, resulting in a serious operation and hospitalization for eight weeks. The Oakes Tornadoes, our traditional rivals, journeyed to Ellendale for the next game of the season. Playing on their home field, the Cards handed the Tornadoes a 27 to 0 defeat. In their last home game, the Cards met the ever- strong Lisbon team, who made the Redbirds bow with a 2? to 6 victory for the Bronchos. The following week the Cards journeyed to Edgeley, where Ellendale was out- scored by the Ran- gers, 13 to 6. The LaMoure Loboes, the conference chanps, were Ellendale 1 s opponents in the final game of the season. The Cards gave way to a 30 to 0 defeat. During the 1951 season, the injury riddled Cardinals only managed to win their one game, but the success or failure of a football season is not altogether determined upon the number of games won, but rather upon the moral and sportsmanship of the team. In this respect the 1951 football season was a highly successful one for the Ellendale Cardinals. The football banquet was given on Tuesday, December 11 by the football mothers. Mr. Ingvalson acted as Master of Ceremonies and Wayne Hill was guest speaker. At the banquet Gary Edwards and Frank Heitman were elected co-captains for the 1952 season. 1952 Ellendale High School Yearbook - Coleman Museum 2017 ECON 536 155A SHIP 5 23 atAet zil 7mm Top row, left to right: Stanley Kern, student manager , Robert Jury, Bernard Rowe, ' Ned ' Lelby , Herbert Wagner , Richard Schonberger , and Coach Isachsen. The success of the 1951-52 Ellendale basketball team has not been measured by wins and losses. The team gained six victories, but each game was a success for the team, because they displayed the sportsmanship and courtesy which our whole high school can be proud. Kulm took first place in the conference, while Lisbon and Enderlin took top honors in the District Tournament, which was held at Lisboa on March 6th, 7th, and 8th. The Cards dropped to 7th place in the tournament. They were handicapped by the loss of two of their regulars. The cheering squad did a fine job of supporting its team all during the season. The cheering was loud and strong even when the team lost. Our hats are off to the 1951-52 basketball team, coach, student manager, and cheering squad. The remainder of the squad was rounded out with six other bright prospects : Don McShane, Jack Helder, Bruce Beaver, Harlen Stahlecker, Larry Hagen, and Raymond Pomplun. We nov; have the privilege of walking down the aisle, with proud parents looking on, to receive our dip- lomas . As freshmen, we were green but, oh, so happy and proud. We worked hard and played hard that year, and graduated into senior high. Being sophomores was even more enjoyable than being freshmen for we sat in the same study hall with the seniors whom we all idolized. Being initiated was a treat never to be forgotten. Now, as graduating seniors, we proudly take one last look at those four glorious years and then turn our faces toward the future. We feel prepared to meet the future with faith in our country, faith in ourselves, and faith in our Father. And so, with regret in our hearts and confidence in the future, we say good-bye to EHS where some of our happiest times were spent. 1952 Ellendale High School Yearbook - Coleman Museum 2017 ADVERTISING 1952 Ellendale High School Yearbook - Coleman Museum 2017 ■yM U ECON 536 155A SHIP 5-23 Ellendale Motors Buick Cars Allis Chalmers Machinery Parts Sc Service Phone 63 U Coast to Coast Store Hardware-Auto Supplies Don Ludtka, Prop.
