Their confidence was soon shaken, however, and they found that their outstanding brilliancy was apparently unnoticed, especially by the seniors. Then the class was organized. The officers chosen were: president, Jeanette McShane; vice-president, Harold Edwards; secretary and treasurer, Joyce Hill; class reporters, Peggy Walleen and Wayne Gibson; and class adviser, Mrs. Brouillard. We had a good year with lots of parties and lots of learning that was to help us through the rest of high school. For our class picnic we went to Weber ' s Gulch in the hills. There in the wilds we ate our dill pickles and ice cream. The fall of 19 7 found a crowd of green sophomores entering Senior High, chuck full of spirit, charaping at the bit, ea er to start on an active year and grab all the honors within reach. Marvin Griffin was chosen president; Lyle Heitman, vice-president; Michael Hermansen, secretary and treasurer; Nona Mellang and Margaret Walleen, class reporters; and Mrs. Strand, class adviser. Our enrollment dropped to twenty-four that year. Although much was done in the way of fearful drawings and other intimidations on the part of the seniors, in regard to the terrors of initiation, the sophomores survived it all exceedingly well and were made to feel that they were at last a part of Senior High. We chose Fort Ransom for our class picnic. There was not the usual display of enthusiasm that characterized the freshman picnic, but that may have been due to the sophistication. Our candidates for King and Queen, Marvin Griffin and Betty Bauder, won over the other excellent candidates and reigned over the annual Oompah. In 19U8 the sophomores became very grown-up juniors with much pull, push, and ambition. The enrollment was 25 that year, for we had one new member. Class officers were president, Harris Voegeli; vice-president, Nona Mellang; secretary and treasurer, Betty Bauder; class reporters, Jeanette McShane and Ella Steinwand; and class adviser. Miss Onsrud. Then came the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, the major event of the season. Our theme was Spring Serenade . This event was one that enabled the class to show its ingenuity, originality, cooperation, and tact. The banquet was held in the Catholic Church basement and the prom was held in the gymnasium with John Taylor and his orchestra providing the music. Donna Mae Van Sickle of the junior class was made a member of the Keystone Honor Society. The juniors picnicked at Richmond Lake near Aberdeen. A few found time to take a motor boat ride. At last the juniors became the traditional dignified seniors. Harris Voegeli was again chosen president; Marvin Griffin, vice-president; Betty Bauder, secretary and treasurer: class reporters, Nona Mellang and Betty Bauder; and class adviser, Mr. Ingvalson. T he seniors had their turn at initiating the sophomores. This was a very eventful dav for everyone. J Our athletic class shared in eight major football and basketball championships which were won during our four years in high school. As seniors we had nine football lettermen and four basketbaU. lettermen. One girl took part in a twirling organization and received a pm for four years of performing. Three class members received charms for four years of band work, seventeen were active in glee club, and a number took part in speech and musical fest- ivals. Four were given membership in the Keystone Honor Society. Beginning early and increasing in strength was the spirit of an annual. The staff was chosen and work was begun. It was not easy work, and there were many difficulties to over- come. We changed the traditional name Microphone to the The Redbird . Next came the senior play, So Very Young , which was a colossal success. -incV ' u iS the histor y ' the class of 1950. Thus far the undertakings of the class of have been successful as those of a progressive class are sure to be. 1950 Ellendale High School Yearbook - Coleman Museum 2017 Piofi tecef Here v re are in the year 1965 A.D. Wayne Gibson, Ella Steirrwand and I, Harold Edwards, having made our first, second and third million as inventors, decided to take a quick trip around the world and see what the rest of our classmates of the outstanding class (they were all outstanding in front of the school house at one time or another), of 1950 were doing, climbing into our Atomic Hydrojet Aircar, with the Super Buper Liquid Powermatic Fingertip Clutch Control, (a recent invention of ours) we set out at a moderate pace. Climbing to 95,000 feet, we cruised along at about 5000 M.P.H. Our first stop was Hew York City. While our Atomic Hydrojet Aircar with the Super Buper Liquid Powermatic Fingertip Clutch Control was being refueled, we wandered down fifth avenue. Passing a small 1000-story building, we heard horrible noises. Ella screamed and ran to call a cop. Wayne and I bravely entered the building, (our knees were knocking but that was probably caused by the cold) expecting to find someone being murdered. However, it was only Bauna Bell and her Yowling Yahoos , successors to Spike Jones and his City Slickers. Leaving the building, we came upon Ella, who was accompanied by Eddie Brauer. Eddie informed us that he had just returned from Betroit where he had been granted a free 10-year membership in Henry Ford ' s A.l.F.A.A. Inc. ( American Lovers of Ford Automobiles Association Inc.) for driving a Ford for almost 20 years. Eddie showed us where Marvin Griffin and Bonna Mae Van Sickle were play : ng the lead in the current stage hit, John ' s Wife ' s Other Husband. We were in a hurry though, and as they were not at the theatre, we were unable to see them. Next we set out for Poughkeepsie, Hew York, where Ivan Sand, one of our more settled classmates, was professor of English at Vassar College. We found Ivan a dignified, bespectacled old gentleman wearing spats, high button shoes, a coat with tails, striped trousers and carrying a cane. Ivan told us that Bruce McShane, the owner of an overall factory, had been elected president of the American Temperance Society. Back in our Aircar, we turned on the visio-radio, just in time to hear and see Jeanette McShane, the popular blues singer, singing her latest recording hit, The Sliy is Blue, the Sea is Blue and I am Blue For You . An announcer in- formed us that Jeanette was sponsored by Marilyn Hiepler and her dairy of Contented Cows . Changing the station, we heard Nona Mellang, successor to Bill Stearns, broadcasting a baseball game. Nona,we learned, had decided to stay single for the good of humanity. 1950 Ellendale High School Yearbook - Coleman Museum 2017 N 5 2 3 16 5 Just as we were about to turn off the visio-radio, we heard an important news flash. Ambert Eabcock, a mad science-fiction fan, had just flown the first rocket to the moon and was challenging anyone else to try to land there. Before we knew it, we were in London. Climbing out to stretch our legs, we found ourselves confronted by Donald Brown, a writer of several popular ro- mantic novels, who told us he was resting before starting another book. Walking down town we came to a lecture hall, and deciding it would be a good place to rest, we went in. As we sat down there was a burst of applause. Looking up we saw Helen Tuuri. She had just received the distinguished honor of being named chairman of the S.P.C.F.E. (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Flowers in England). After a short visit with Helen we continued on to Paris, where we met Joyce Anderson, a famous model who was vacationing there. With her was Betty Bauder, a famous tobacco auctioneer. We ate lunch with them and then took off on the last log of our journey. Passing over Moscow, we were surprised to hear the voice of Peggy Walleen on the Voice of America . Peggy was a former Girls ' Stater and at present govern or of North Dakota. She was vigorously campaigning for the office of president on the No-Party ticket. Although the election was three years off, Peggy evidently wanted people to know she was a candidate. In no time at all we were over the Hawiian Islands where our visio-radio picked up a special broadcast of the Lyle Heitman vs. Joe Louis exhibition match. Lyle, now world ' s heavyweight boxing champ, had no trouble with the aging Louis. The roving television camera picked up Eleanore Christianson and her husband followed by six young ones. In her letters Eleanore had told us that she and her family, longing for the rustic pioneer life, had moved to a small log cabin in the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. Landing in San Francisco we went to a movie, Wayne paying as Ella and I had nothing smaller than $10,000 bills. In a special film we saw pictures of Harris Voegeli, the first man to capture a flying saucer, being interviewed by Lawrence Kelly, a reporter for the New York Times. From San Francisco it was only a few minutes trip to Ellendale. Landing, we were met by more of our former school mates, Marion Magoon, Elinor Wedell, and Mickey Hermansen. Marion is owner of the Stork Club in New York, Elinor is the coach of Notre Dame ' s All American team, while Mickey is owner of the Big Ben Watch Co. Eating supper that night, we talked over old times and decided that no one can tell what a person will make of himself. As often as not, a person will end up doing something just opposite of what people expected him to do. Looking at our watches, we see it is time to leave, so paying our check, we traipsed off into the sunset. 1950 Ellendale High School Yearbook - Coleman Museum 2017 05 23 l65 TOM We, the seniors at Ellendale High School, considering the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death, being of sound mind and memory, do make public and declare this, our last will and testament, hereby revoking any and all wills hereunto by us made, in the manner following, to-wdt: Article I To the school board, Mr. Ingvalson and the rest of the faculty, the privilege of running the school. On October lU, thirty-four unhappy Sophomores were officially initiated into Senior High. The Seniors did a good job of dressing them in various costumes. They paraded through main street in the morning and put on a show at the Oakes-Ellendale football game and in the evening a party was given for the Sophs by the Seniors. The Sophomore class sponsered a few parties during the year, which were held after basketball games. At Christmas time the Sophomores sent a gift of nine dollars to the Children’ s .Home Society in Fargo. Early in the school year class officers were elected. Esther Schaller, president} Peggy Hatfield, vice-president; Joyce Evans, secretary-treasurer; and Mr. Ringham, class advisor. 1950 Ellendale High School Yearbook -Coleman Museum 2017 1950 Ellendale High School Yearbook - Coleman Museum 2017 0523 i 165 P ' te44 H4Ut Top Row, left to right-M. The freshmen began their new school year with a Junior High party in October which consisted of games, dancing, and refreshments. They later had a freshman party. _ They gave eighteen dollars to the Crippled Children ' s Home at Jamestown at Christman time instead of exchanging names. Winton Melby, Director 1950 Ellendale High School Yearbook - Coleman Museum 2017 0523 165 This year the Ellendale High School Band celebrated the twenty-fifth year of its existence. The year 192lj marked the beginning of a new era in the history of the school when W. L. Briley was employed by the school board to organize instruction in instrumental music. The school has boasted a band ever SinCe he band has begun a campaign for new uniforms. No decision has been made concerning style or color, but general opinion leans toward slacks and double- breasted coats in the school colors — red and black. Band Program On December 8, the band sponsored a novelty program in the high school gymnasium. Mr. Melby, director, invited several non-band students to Present their numbers. The first half of the program included music by the band; the second, novelty and inpersonation. Records of popular singers were played bac stage while students stood before the audience and went through the motions of singing. Harris Voegeli was the swing band leader and the Andrew Sisters were Owen Evans, Isaac Hill, and Jack Helder. Semper Fidelis March Carnival of Roses . The Waltz King . .. Merry Men ..... The team brought home the fourth place trophy from Kulm by defeating Oakes in an overt ime, 33-3? In the district tournament the Cards lost their first game to a much taller LaMoure team. In the second game EUendale was defeated by Ends rl in. It takes an A -one cheering squad to keep on cheering a losing team, and the school dis- played this A -one quality through all of the games . Although Coach Ringh am didn’t produoea winning team this year, he did teach the team to co- operate with team mates, to plcy the game fair and square, and to win or lose cheerfully. Graduation, which seemed never within our destiny, is one of the most important milestones of our lives. With regret and happiness we must take with us those happy memories of the sponsoring of our last school party, singing in our last choral festival, and playing our last football and basketball games for Ellendale High School. Our striving toward success, however, does not end at graduation, for we have a future yet to face. We have been greatly helped in our preparation for the future by the understanding teachers who have patiently guided us during our school days and given us confidence that we can succeed and to our devoted parents who have given us their unending affection and encouragement. This introduction to life given by our high school enables us to be better citizens; and we hope that we, the class of ' 5 0, should be able faithfully to serve our home, our country, and our Creator.
