football In winning the Southeastern Conference Championship, this year’s football team set a record unequaled by any previous Cardi- nal eleven. No opponent was able to cross the Redbirds’ goal line. In fact no oppon- ent got within the 25 yard line while the Cardinal first eleven was on the field. Coach Chas. Picken called practice two weeks before school started. There were about 28 men who reported for practice regularly during the season. There were eleven lettermen returning. They were V. Steinwand, D. Thorpe, N. Christensen, B. LeMatta, R. Rime, M. Bauder, S. Tuchscher, D. Whelan, H. Aberle, R. Retzlaff, and C. Anderson. They presented an abundance of material for Coach Picken to work with. Coach Picken used the single wing forma- tion. This offense proved very effective through-out the season. Darwin Whelan and Fred Retzlaff re- peatedly drove for large gains through the line. S. Tuchscher skirted the ends almost at will. H. Aberle and C. Aberle alternated at the Quarterback position. The heavy line composed of V. Steinwand, D. Thorpe, W. Bauder, N. Christensen, B. LeMatta, R. Rime and C. Anderson presented an im- pregnable stone wall that stopped every attempt made by the opposition. Norman Christensen should be given credit for his interception of the lateral in the Oakes game which proved to be the winning touchdown. Coach Picken, the lettermen, and stu- dent manager, Bob Adams, were presented with miniature gold footballs by the Ad- vertising Association at a banquet given by them. The guest speaker was Mylo Jack- son, head football coach of the Aberdeen High School. At the annual Football Banquet given by the mothers, the following boys were given letters: Seniors — V. Steinwand, D. Thorpe, N. Christensen, R. Rime, B. Le- Matta, W. Bauder, M. Bauder, S. Tuchscher, P. McShane; Juniors — D. Whelan, F. Retz- laff, H. Aberle, C. Aberle, C. Anderson, K. Pierce; Sophomores — P. Retzlaff, J. Flolo Bob Adams was also given a letter as Stu- dent Manager. Victor Steinwand was elect- ed Honorary Captain by the lettermen, and Norman Christensen was voted Honor Ath- lete by the entire squad. This year two groups, the senior band and a be- ginners’ group, have been working diligently under the capable direction of Mr. Wilbur Shep- pard. There has been steady improvement in both groups. The senior band has a membership of 15; the beginners’ band, 39. The senior band has made several public appearances includ- ing performances at basketball games. The annual Dickey-LaMoure Band Festival was held at Edgely this year. On April 25, the Ellendale, Edgeley, and Oakes bands partici- pated. There were two intensive practice periods held, one in the morning and one in the after- noon. In the evening the following program was given: Normal March . Bennett Iron Count Overture K. L. King Chapel Shrine Chester Leoni Special Number Prince and Pauper Overture Harold M. Johnston Merry Widow Franz Lehan Special Number Magic Garden K. L. King Trombone Toboggan .... As we all know, the twirlers of 1946 and 1947 did not accomplish much. This was due to the fact that they did not have enough uniforms, but as it looks now they will have their uni- forms by Memorial Day. So by next year the twirlers will be able to take a more active part in school activities. 1947 Ellendale High School Annual - Coleman Museum 2017

basketball Front row: Pierce, Thorpe, Rime, Whelan, Aberie. Second row: Coach Picken, Retzlaff, Steinwand, Christensen, Lematta, Tuchscher, Adams, manager. The Ellend ale High School basketball team does not boast as glorious a season as they did last year, but on the whole the season proved to be successful. Although the Cards won only twelve of the twenty-three games they played this season, the ones they did lose proved to be thrillers with the Cards losing by a margin of only a very few points. The team won two more trophies this year, one for first place in the Kulm Invitational and the other for third place in the District Three Tourney at Lisbon. The players awarded letters this year were Keith Pierce, Norman Christensen, Daryl Thorpe, Ramon Rime, Darwin Whelan, Harold Aberie, Fred Retzlaff, and Sebtstian Tuchscher.
