CHORAL MUSIC ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PROGRAM The processional of singers started at 8:00 o’clock. With the high school chorus serving as a nucleus, the entire group numbered over 200 voices, and included children from grades three to twelve inclusive. A fac ulty committee in charge of decorations and staging consisted of Mrs. Opal Brouillard, Mrs. Lemana Heckmann and C. H. Picken. A number of Christmas carols were used, but there were also special numbers by both high school and grade choral groups. Miss Martha Buck was in general charge of the program and directed the high school chorus. She was assisted by Mrs. Harriet Randall, who directed an upper grade group, and Mrs. Le- mana Heckmann, who had charge of the third, fourth, and fifth grade chorus. A group of high school girls coached by Miss Mina Onsrud read the Christmas story in unison. Janice Rime was the principal accompanist. FOOTBALL Although Ellendale’s Football Team could not keep step with the record pace it had set last year, it did capture third place and was ranked among the outstanding teams in this district. The Cards got a late start in the football season, but the team was soon taken under con- trol by their new coach, Chuck Picken. Chuck Employed the tricky T-formation against his op- ponents at the beginning of the season, but later on combined this formation with the single wing formation. The backfield was about average in size and weight. The two hard-hitting line drivers, Nor- man Christensen and Warren Merrick, along with the other two fast and shifty backs, Bar- ton Slemmons and Ramon Rime, account for the steady gains made through and around the line. Although the passing offense, with either of the ends, Wayne Marrick or Darwin Whelan, re- ceiving the ball from any one of the backfield men, made large gains throughout the season, it was not as consistent as the driving backfield. We must also acknowledge the determination and fine work that the line did throughout the season. Although the line was comparatively light, Oakes was the only team that really hit harder than they, and the line made this up by using their brains with their brawn and turned the game into the closest and most ex- citing game of the season. The line was headed by Benny Lematta, Victor Steinwand, Charles Anderson, Daryl Thorpe and Verland Zinter. Sixteen letters were issued at the annual football banquet. The senior letter men that have completed their fine football career were Wayne Merrick, Warren Merrick, Barton Slem- mons, Gerald Hill, and Verland Zinter. The jun- Page 10 iors were Norman Christensen, Benny Lematta, Victor Steinwand, Ramon Rime, Merlyn Bauder, Daryl Thorpe, and Sebastian Tuchscher, and the Sophomores were Darwin Whelan, Charles An- derson, Harold Aberle, and Freddie Retzlaff. An- other senior, Malcolm Goddard, was awarded a letter as student manager. Barton Slemmons was elected honorary cap- tain by the entire squad, while Wayne Merrick was elected honor athlete by the Lettermen. This group has done much to add “zip” and color to our athletic events. Members of the team are: Iona Kuch, Myrna Wallace and Mardella Wedell, seniors; Barbara Schook, Irene Shimmin and Lorene Zimmerman, juniors; Lois Griffin, Betty Heipler, Betty Krieger, and Joan Meyer, sopho- mores. On “Recognition Day” held in May the twirl- ing pin was awarded Iona, Myrna and Mardella, who have all served on the team for three years or more. Iona Kuch deserves special mention as she has served as majorette during all these years and has done more than her share in instructing the younger girls who are learning the art of twirling. Freshmen girls who have been receiving in- struction this year are Betty Hagen, Nadine Jury and Lois Rowe. 1946 Ellendale High School Annual - Coleman Museum 2017 BASKETBALL BOYS BACK ROW: M. Rime. fia JudbalL The 1945 Ellendale High School basketball team again marked up one of the finest records in the history of the school. For the second straight year, Ellendale climbed to the finals at the state tournament at Minot. The beginning of the basketball season was very successful, and it was not until the team had added eight straight wins to last year’s 27 to make the total of 35 consecutive wins, that the team weakened and fell to the two strong teams east of us, Lisbon and Enderlin. These defeats proved to be the only losses throughout the season, until the finals at Minot. However, the team showed its superiority in ball playing when Lisbon and Enderlin played return games here later in the season. Ellendale tied Lisbon for first place in con- ference basketball. Each team, therefore, will be host to the conference trophy for 6 months. The Cards were equally successful through- out the tournament play. They came through on top, in the largest and hardest district tour- nament they had ever entered. Although the opening and final games of the tournament, against LaMoure and Oakes, were easy victor- ies, the second and third games against Lisbon and Enderlin provided the toughest competition of the tournament. At the regional meet, the team played much better ball against Cheyenne than they had in the district tournament. They pushed Chey- enne over, scoring 39 to 23 and earning the right to enter the state tournament. The Cards kept up their fast and classy pace throughout the first two games of the state tournament downing Rugby, 59 to 32 and El- bowoods, 47 to 34. These wins qualified the Cards to defend the state championship title against Mayville. In the final game the Cards bowed to the strong Mayville team, the score favoring the latter 41 to 31. Now that the season is over we can say that we are mighty proud of the team which won second place in the state B tournament at Mi- not. The coach and team were awarded minia- ture silver basketballs for their achievement by the North Dakota High School League. But their greatest reward was the hearty welcome that they received f rom the townspeople after their return from the tournament. When they reached the city shortly after 6:00 o’clock, they saw hanging across the street a huge banner which stated “Your City is Proud of You.” Es- corted to the entrance of Hotel Ellendale, they were tumultuously greeted by a throng of en- thusiastic rooters, parents and friends. At the informal program given to welcome the squad, Senn Slemmons, last year’s Cardinal coach, was master of ceremonies. Tributes to the team were given by Mayor Christensen, Dr. Roy Lynde, Coach Charles Picken, Supt. E. C. Ingvalson, Miss Mina Onsrud, high school prin- cipal, and President J. C. McMillan. Honoring the victorious Cardinals, various dinners and parties were held. These included banquets given by the Community Club and by the N. I. and also an all-high school dancing party given by the mothers of the boys on the team. At the party letters were awarded as fol- lows: Seniors - Warren Merrick, Wayne Merrick Page 11 1946 Ellendale High School Annual - Coleman Museum 2017 SnapAhoh l Page 12 1946 Ellendale High School Annual - Coleman Museum 2017 and Barton Slemmons, all three-year lettermen. Page 1A 1946 Ellendale High School Annual - Coleman Museum 2017 1946 Ellendale High School Annual - Coleman Museum 2017 Qn. dfaUwApact We of the senior class of 1946 have reached an important milestone in our lives. As we look back over our twelve years in school we remember many things: playing marbles, throw- ing snow-balls, watching the new gymnasium rise from its foundation, and even doing a little studying at times. While we have been going to high school, a devastating world war has taken an unbeliev- able toll in human lives and physical resources. Although the battlefields were thousands of miles from our shores, the struggle has left its i mpressions upon us. We’ve had a fine staff of teachers who have patiently helped to prepare us to take an active part in this swift age. The entire school and community is proud of the accomplishments of the basketball and football teams who have at- tained outstanding records — but not by neg- lecting school work. We’ve had good times at parties, plays, and sports events and we’re going to remember them always. Friendships have grown up through the years and we have learned to work alongside our fellows. Yes, we owe much to our high school. It has given us an introduction to life, enabling us to learn and to practice the ways of peace. and freedom. We hope that we can in some way, repay it by faithfully serving our Lord and thereby serving our fellowmen. G. K.
