(Bct ksdbalL The 1944-45 Ellendale High School basketball aggre- gation boasts an unprecedented record in Cardinal history. After taking a clean sweep of the Southeastern Confer- ence race with a perfect standing of ten wins and no losses, the high-flying Cardinals went on to capture the class B championship at Minot. Playing a total of 27 games the Cardinals came through the season with but one loss. The Ashley Aces defeated the Cards in a pre-season game, 34-30, but the Redbirds came back strong in a mid-season game and dealt the Aces a 47-24 set-back. Other highlights of the season included the 34-30 defeat handed to the Jamestown Bluejays and the two victories over the strong St. Catherine ' s quint from Valiey City, unanimously picked by the Redbirds as their toughest opposition. Early season favorites to represent Region 3 in the state tourney, Ellendale came through with flying colors. The long trail to Minot started in the sub-district at Edge- ley. Here the Cardinals trounced St. John ' s Academy of Jamestown in the opener, 49-28. In the semi-final round the Oakes Tornadoes threw a scare into the high-geared Redbirds, but the Tornadoes were subdued, 37-28. In the district tourney Ellendale rode to an easy 55-23 victory over Lisbon and eked out a slim 33-30 win over St. Catherine ' s in the Card ' s toughest game of the season. The following week found the Redbirds journeying to Carrington for the regional play-off, where they handed Cooperstown a 43-33 set-back and gained the right to enter the state tournament at Minot the following week. Now for the first time in history an Ellendale team was qualified for the state tournament. In their opening game, playing mediocre ball, the Cards beat Hettinger 40-23. Playing much better ball in the semi-final round, the Redbirds built up an early lead over Hannah, but barely held it until the final gun went off with the score 42-40 for Ellendale. The championship issue between the Elbowwoods Indian School and the Redbirds was never in doubt, as the Cardinals pulled to an early 12-5 first period lead, extended it to 24-15 at the half, 33-19 at the third quarter mark, and for a final score of 44-30. Members of the team and Coach Siemmons were pre- sented with miniature gold basketballs by the State High School League. Upon arriving home they were accorded a rousing welcome by the townspeople. A banquet in their honor was sponsored jointly by the Ellendale Com- munity Club and the Advertising Association at the little gym at the high school. Later they shared honors with the state champion Monango girls ' team and with the Fingal, Class C team at a banquet at N. I. Lettermen designated by Coach Siemmons were John Blumer, Duane Mattheis, Monty Brouillard, Bob Dilling- ham and Gordon Walleen, seniors; Barton Siemmons, Wayne and Warren Merrick, juniors; Norman Christensen and Ramon Rime, sophomores; and Darwin Whelan, fresh- man. Selections for various mythical teams were: All-Conference — B. Dillingham, J. Blumer, B. Siemmons, Wayne and Warren Merrick. Honorable mention — D. Mattheis. Sub-District — J. Blumer, B. Dillingam, M. Brouillard. District — Wayne Merrick, B. Dillingham, J. Blumer. All-State — J. Blumer, Wayne and Warren Merrick. TRACK Due to the exceptionally late basketball season open- ing, track workouts were delayed until the first week in April. However, Coach Siemmons had his thinclads in fairly good shape for the firts meet. Four returning let- termen — Neil Smith, John Blumer, Bob Dillingham, and Wayne Merrick — bolster the squad of 15 members. dihlxiicA, J ' OotbalL The Ellendale High School Cardinals enjoyed the first undefeated, untied football season in the school ' s history since the fall of 1938. As a re- sult of this unblemished season, the Cards have been awarded the conference championship and are to receive gold footballs as a reward for their excellent exploits on the gridiron. The miniature gold footballs are to be the gifts of various civic clubs of Ellendale. Employing the tricky T-formation, Coach Slem- mons ' charges rolled over their five opponents, compiling a total of 121 points to the opposition ' s 14. The Redbirds were never behind for a mo- ment in a single engagement. The Cardinal ' s major offensive weapon was their sparkling passing attack, which netted the Cards many decisive touchdowns throughout the season. The passing combination of Quarterback Monty Brouillard to either of the lanky ends, Wayne Merrick or Bob Dillingham, or else to the shifty halfback, Gordon Walleen, was unequaled in the conference. However, the powerful run- ning attack, led by Warren Merrick, Neil Smith and Barton Slemmons, is worthy of much recog- nition. A comparatively light but highly efficient line, headed by such stalwarts as John Blumer, Leonard Krause, Duane Mattheis, Benny Lematta and Nor- man Christensen, consistently opened gaps for the backs and checked the opponents ' offensive at- tempts. At the annual football banquet in charge of the mothers of the squad, 19 letters were issued. Senior lettermen winding up a glorious high school football career were Monty Brouillard, John Blu- mer, Neil Smith, Duane Mattheis, Jack Roland, Orville Gehring, Gordon Walleen, Leo Houghton, Bob Dillingham and Leonard Krause, a new stu- dent hailing from Ashley. Junior lettermen named were Barton Slemmons, Wayne and Warren Mer- rick and Jerry Hill. Sophomores designated as lettermen were Norman Christensen, Benny Lemat- ta, Ramon Rime and Victor Steinwand. Freshman Darwin Whelan also received a letter, as did our efficient student manager, Malcolm Goddard. Monty Brouillard was elected captain by the entire squad and John Blumer was chosen as honorary athlete by the lettermen.
