Clarence Neumann, Boyd Blumer, Jack Aberle, Ivan Banderwald, Milton Haims, Alvin Marvick, Robert McMillan, Reuben Roehl, LaVerne Wedell, Benny Graham, Erwin Sand, and Victor Strand were the returning lettermen. Coach had to work with a light backfield, but a fairly heavy line all having some experience. The season ' s summary. Ellendale... 0 Enderlin 36 Ellendale 9 Aberdeen 7 Ellendale.. 8 Oakes 0 Ellendale 14 LaMoure 14 Ellendale 0 E gelev 0 Ellendale 12 Lisbon 0 The team had a successful year, although they did lose their opening game. The team then came back and did not lose a game for the remainder of the season. This just goes to show what E. H. S. really can do when there is real determination. The Ellendale-Oakes game was the thriller of the season, as Oakes had planned on an easy victory. Ellendale proceeded to outplay their opponents, hold- ing them scoreless and scoring eight points for themselves. The banquet given by the mothers was enjoyed by the whole squad. The senior lettermen were: Reuben Roehl, Clarence Neumann, Boyd Blumer, Milton Harms, Robert McMillan, Alvin Marvick, Luverne Wedell Ivan Benderwald, Jack Aberle, Ralph Grif- fin, Melvin Kuch, and Kenneth Isaak, student man- ager ; juniors: Benny Graham, Randall Graham, Vic- tor Strand, Erwin Sands, Raymond Aberle, and Eddie Kuch. Clarence Neumann was elected Honor Athlete for 1941, and received a gold football provided by Coach 0. K. Ehlers and E. C. Ingvalson. Milton Harms was elected Honorary Captain for the 1941 season. BASKETBALL Five lettermen reported for practice together with a large squad of boys with some experience. The lettermen : Clarence Neumann, Boyd Blumer, Jack Aberle, LaVern Boyle, and Benny Graham. These boys and Charles Fleming, Eddie Kuch, Mel- vin Kuch, and Ernest King received letters this year. The season on the whole was not very success- ful although the team was not as weak as it might appear. For example E. H. S. defeated both teams that won in our sub-district and the district tourna- ments. Our team learned how to lose and take it with a grin. Next year Coach Ehlers should have a more experienced squad, and the 1942 team will be looking forward to their success. During the football and basketball season. the band has greatly added to the enjoyment of the sport fans by its snappy appearance and peppy music. Although the band is losing seven seniors, we will have an excellent band next year. The seniors leaving this year are Ivan Benderwald, Lois Coleman, Eunice DuRand, Ilene Fuller, Doris Gee, Kenneth Isaak, and Inga Martin. There are 59 members in the combined bands. The membership of the Senior Band is 34 and the Junior Band, 25. The Senior Band consist of the following: Trumpets — Neil Smith, Jacques Roland, Monty Brouillard, Harold Stucker, Vivian Huber, Donald Juberg, Shirley Holsinger, and Wayne Merrick. Clarinets — Victor Strand, Keith Sehnert, Phyllis Christensen, Ilene Fuller, Robert Coleman, Virginia Reukaff, Joyce Evans, Billy Randall, Barton Slem- mons, Warren Merrick, Jackie Holsinger, Kenneth Muske. Horns — Eunice DuRand, Kenneth Isaak, Os- wald Barsten, Kenneth Hiene, Avis Naze. Trombones — John Blumer, Owen Amphlett, Inga Martin. Drums — Malcolm Goddard, Snare; Lois Coleman, Bass. Cymbals — Doris Gee. Baritone — Willis Flem- ing, Marilyn Pfeifer. Bass — Ivan Benderwald, Or- ville Gehring. Junior Band. Trombone — Frances Tuchscher, Donald Porter. Drums — Rose Tuchscher, Bass; Gladys Wahl, Snare. The entire band was sorry to lose one of its out- standing players. Alden G. Johnson played trombone in the band and the high school orchestra. A very talented player, he took music seriously and would have been a success in the musical world. It is with regret that we have to continue our activities with- out him. As in the past several years the efforts of the band culminated in the annual band festival which was this year held at LaMoure. Mr. J. A. Holvik had again been invited as guest conductor. H. S. band next year. He does not plan to return as a teacher because he expects to be drafted or he will enter some type of defense work. Senior Athletes KENNETH ISAAK started managing the team under Walter Vomhoff when he was a junior. While the team had glory and honor he had nothing but hard work. He was, besides being student manager, elected cheer leader and in these ways he helped his school and his team. REUBEN ROEHL, “RUBE,” has earned two let- ters in his favorite sport which was football. He played tackle and backfield positions. Instead of basketball, Rube started training for track, and it is expected he will earn another letter this year. LUV.ERNE WEDELL has earned two football letters. He took up the game when he was a sopho- more and stuck it out until he has mastered the game. He played at right guard. Luverne is a bas- ketball enthusiast and has done good work in track. MELVIN KUCH, “COOKIE,” earned his first football letter this year. Football is his favorite sport. In basketball he played guard and held down this position very successfully. RALPH GRIFFIN “GRIFF,” names football as his favorite sport. He earned a letter in his first year out. Griff played right end. He is a firm sup- porter of the basketball team and is going out for track. He favors the shot put in track. ROBERT McMILLAN “MAC,” has earned two letters in football. He played in the backfield, usu- ally quarterback. He is a good worker and Coach Ehlers has hopes for him in the 440 and 220 dash and the broad jump. JACK ABERLE “JACKSON.” Jack’s game is basketball. He earned three letters during his high school career. Jack’s speed and offensive ability made him a key man on the team. In football he earned one letter, playing almost constantly in the backfield positions. In track Jack’s main events are sprints and the broad jump. BOYD BLUMER. Football is Boyd’s specialty. He played four years and earned three stripes. His main position was tackle, but he was a capable hand in the backfield position also. In basketball he suc- ceeded in earning three letters as guard. The hurdles is his main event in track. CLARENCE NEUMANN “FRITZ,” was elected honorary captain for 1940 and honor athlete for the 1941 season. Football is his favorite game. He played four years and earned three stripes. He played in the backfield positions, calling signals in his senior year. In 1941 he was elected to the all- conference team. In basketball he played four years earning three letters at the forward position. Tennis has taken up his time instead of track in the spring. MILTON HARMS, “MILT,” was elected honor captain 1942 season. He played football for three years, playing in the line and backfield positions. He earned three letters in football. His work in track has earned him a letter. His main event is the low hurdles. IVAN BENDERWALD, “BENDY.” Football is Bendy’s game. He played two years earning a letter each year. His height made him a good pass re- ceiver together with his ag gressiveness. He was a basketball enthusiast and played on the senior team. ALVIN MARVICK played football for two years earning two letters as guard. His weight together with his experience made him a valuable player on the team. He was a basketball fan and is on the high school tumbling team. The senior class has been outstanding in all high school sports. We have always had key men on all the football, basketball and track teams since the beginning of high school. We have been the only class to win the intramural basketball championship for three years in a row. We deeply regret that we can no longer participate in high school athletic ac- tivities.
