E. H. S. MIXED CHORUS Under the able direction of Mr. Stenehjem, the glee clubs and mixed chorus have made splendid progress this year. This is Mr. Stenehjem’s second year with the choruses at Ellendale, and their work together shows much improvement. With the aid of Miss Edna Bruns and Miss Frances DuRand, as accompanists, the choruses have presented a num- ber of excellent programs. The members of the choruses are as follows: Sopranos — Lilian Dobler, Frances Backley, Frances Walker, Lillian Hillius, Marjorie Meachen, Vivian Fleming, Lorraine Gibson, Mary Griffin, Doro- thy Heine. Altos — Gene Huber, Gene Wolfe, Irma Irion, Miriam Crabtree, Doris Bolstad, Peggy Blumer, Frances DuRand, Thelma Bolstad, Janet Brouillard, Edith Maunu. Tenors — Richard Irion, Rolla DuRand, Oscar Roehl, Clinton Hess, Merrill Hess, Marc Tennant. Basses — Clifford Schmierer, Howard Hill, Edward Hafner, Harold Bergman, George Radtke, Jay St. John, Lowell Hamar, Russell Fleming. The third annual Christmas concert was given by the combined glee clubs and chorus of Ellendale High School, December 20, at 7:30 o’clock in the High School Assembly. The following program was given : “Twenty-third Psalm” Monson “Sanctus” Gounod “Temples Eternal” Christiansen “Carol of the Birds” Wilhousky Mixed Chorus “Motet” Special Group “Lights Out” McCoy Boys’ Glee Club “Little Lamb” Davies Girls’ Glee Club Solo — “Mary’s Lullaby” Miss Elizabeth White “Christmas Song” Adolphe Adam “Hospodi Pomilui” Lvovsky “Ich Liebe Dich” Grieg “Now Thank We All Our God” Bach Mixed Chorus Miss Elizabeth White assisted as soloist. Follow- oing the concert a party was held in which all of the Senior High participated. The party was arranged by committees under the direction of the following chorus officers: Mary Griffin, president, and Frances DuRand, secretary-treasurer. On Wednesday, February 16, the glee clubs and mixed chorus presented a program at the N. I. Chapel. Students and teachers both expressed ap- proval of the performance. The annual spring concert of the Ellendale High School choral groups was held in the auditorium of the State Normal and Industrial School Thursday, April 14 at eight o’clock, p. m. mons, Coach Ehlers, and Superintendent Ingvalson. Dudley Anderson was voted honor athlete for 1937. Letters were presented to Vernerd Fitzgerald, Wil- fred McShane, Edward Hafner, Howard Hill, Dud- ley Anderson, Harold Nishek, Lowell Hamar, Harold Rowe, Clifford Schmierer, Leslie Bowman, Jimmy Meachen, Jimmy Carpenter, Jimmy Miles, and Stu- dent Manager Rolla DuRand. BASKETBALL Nineteen boysj ported for basketball during the first week of m xice. This squad was soon divided into the “var ky” and second team. There were five lettermen on the varsity squad, which added much to the strength of the team. The first three games were lost to Kulm, Ellendale “Indees,” and Lisbon. The squad developed into a much better team the latter part of the season. In the Sub-District Tournament held at LaMoure, February 25 and 26, Ellendale defeated Klum and Dazy to get into the finals. Oakes took the cham- pionship game from Ellendale, 20-21. Ellendale lost to Oakes in the opening game of the Oakes Invita- tional Tournament, 23-29. Ellendale won the consola- tion game by defeating Lisbon 24-11. In the District Meet at Lisbon with Enderlin, Sheldon, Oakes, and Ellendale taking part, Ellen- dale defeated Sheldon, 32-19, to get into the cham- pionship game with Enderlin, who defeated Oakes. Ellendale lost the championship to Enderlin, 32-21. This gave Ellendale second place in the tournament. TRACK It is much too early to say much about the track season. There are only two lettermen left from the team last year, Meachen in the broad jump and dashes and Hafner in the hurdles and pole vault. There are also a number of experienced men who didn ' t earn a letter that have been in track compe- tition before. Fitzgerald, Hill (a letterman in ' 36), Anderson, and Tennant are the Seniors who have a chance to earn a letter this year. There are also some promising Juniors who also have a chance — Miles in the hurdles and Schmierer in the half mile. St. John, a Sophomore, is working hard on the weights. Speech Activities Another successful and eventful year in speech activities is nearing completion. Dramatics not only challenge the support and loyalty of the student body but are also a splendid way of raising money for other school activities and social events. SENIOR GIRLS’ DECLAMATION The Senior girls’ declamation program was given Wednesday evening, October 20, at eight o’clock in the Senior High School assembly. Following is the program : “The Two Carpenters” Shirley Courtney Verse Reading Thelma Bolstad “Mrs. Upperly Visits the Poor in Person” Dorothy Heine Verse Reading Sylvia Jensen Verse Reading Avis Theede The program also included a one-act play en- titled, “Just a Little Mistake,” by Elizabeth Gale. The Seniors taking part were: Blanche Daniels, Mable Hays, Faye Jenkins, Elsie Davis, Mary Grif- fin, and Warren Burnett. “VARIETY” PROGRAM Members of the Senior High School presen ted a program of speech and music on March 9. The speech numbers included oratory, verse reading, choric reading, declamation, a skit, and a one-act play. The musical numbers consisted of various se- lections by the boys’ and girls’ glee clubs. DICKEY-LAMOURE PLAY FESTIVAL The fourth annual Dickey-LaMoure one-act play festival was held Wednesday evening, March 16 in Oakes. Participating in the event were the high schools of Edgeley, Ellendale, LaMoure, and Oakes. Ellendale students presented “The Blue Teapot.” Taking part were Lilian Dobler, Howard Hill, Lowell Hamar, and Peggy Blumer. Last year the program was only a half hour, but this year they were requested to prepare a full hour’s program. We can truthfully say the program was enjoyed by all who heard it. We hope that our school may have this honor an- other year. On Thursday, March 3, the Boys’ Glee Club was invited to sing at the regular meeting of the Masonic Lodge. On April 25 the group sang at a meeting of the Ellendale Community Club. SOUTHEASTERN CHORAL FESTIVAL The sixth annual Southeastern Choral Festival will be held this year at Edgeley on May 20. Choruses from Oakes, LaMoure, Edgeley and Ellen- dale will participate. Rowland, guest conductor for the sixth consecutive year, will offer, as is his custom, several appropriate baritone solos. The Mixed Chorus will sing for the Baccalaureate services at the Methodist Church, May 15, and the Mixed Chorus and the Boys’ Glee Club will sing for the graduation exercises to be held Wednesday eve- ning, May 25. BAND Band is another musical organization which has developed greatly under the able direction of Mr. Stenehjem. This year is the thirteenth consecutive year that Ellendale High School has boasted a band. The members of the senior band are as follows: Cornets — Neil Smith, Monty Brouillard, Donald Juberg, Jacques Rowland, Orrin Morrow, Lewellyn Lynde, Clinton Hess. Horns — Eunice DuRand, Kenneth Isaak, Ernest Lees. Flute — Phyllis Fleming. Drums — Rolla DuRand, James Miles, Merrill Hess. Clarinets — Jay St. John, Phyllis Judd, Ilean Ful- ler, Robert Dillingham, Victor Strand, Robert Cole- man, Keith Sehnert. Trombones — John Blumer, Russell Heine. Basses — Lowell Hamar, Ivan Benderwald. The beginners’ band has made great progress this year. Members are as follows: Cornets — Eva King, Lorraine Stalcup, Kirk Ehlers. Horns — Amaryllis Ehlers, Arlene Vomhof, Leo Houghton. Trombone — James Vomhof. Clarinets — Billy Randall, Larry Smelzer, Barton Slemmons. Baritone — Donald Diene, Marilyn Pfeifer, Willis Fleming.
