JJl_ L - The Microphone The Microphone Published under the direction of the officers of the Senior class, May 6, 1938 Vernerd Fitzgerald President Wilfred McShane Vice President Mary Griffin Secretary-treasurer E. C. Ingvalson ....Class Advisor For the fourth consecutive year the Senior class of Ellendale High School is issuing the Microphone. The school has found in this little publication a practical way of bringing to the attention of par- ents and patrons some of the many activities of the school. Necessarily, the so-called extra-curricular activities have been stressed. Around these activ- ities the “life” and “spirit” of the school revolve. For the Senior, the Microphone will serve as an interesting and fitting souvenir of his sojourn in high school. In years to come it will revive for him memories of happy and profitable days spent in El- lendale High School. BOARD OF EDUCATION A. R. Amphlett President Edith McCoy Clerk J. V. Miles F. W. Conferring of Diplomas Star Spangled Banner IN RETROSPECT We, the mighty Seniors of ’38, are coming down the home stretch of the road which all other Seniors before us have traveled. As we look back we see ourselves as we were in the four years of high school. As Frshmen we believed ourselves on top of the world. We tried to lord it over the eighth-graders and to appear grown up, but in the eyes of the Senior high school students we were inconspicuous. Here also we met with some new travelers who are still with us. As Sophomores we were taken down a little by the domineering Seniors of that year. They did everything possible to humiliate us and show us how childish we were. Then came the Junior year when we gained our place and stood firmly together to get the things we were working for. We became more settled and did our work well. Now we have reached the last lap of our high school journey. We are mighty Seniors and we are proud of it. We expect to do only the best things and to make ourselves successful. We are happy to step out and take our places in the world with the alumni. We are looking forward to graduation night with joyous anticipation. But, as good things come not alone, there are mingled with these happy thoughts many regrets. The squad was of average weight with plenty of speed — speed to take it places; in fact it did go places. The squad consisted of eleven lettermen, and the rest of the squad had a great deal of experience. The team was defeated by Oakes and tied by Barnard during the season which consisted of seven games. The fact that Ellendale scored one hundred points to their opponents ' twenty-seven proves that the team was an exceptionally good one. Dudley Anderson was voted honor athlete for 1937. Letters were presented to Vernerd Fitzgerald, Wil- fred McShane, Edward Hafner, Howard Hill, Dud- ley Anderson, Harold Nishek, Lowell Hamar, Harold Rowe, Clifford Schmierer, Leslie Bowman, Jimmy Meachen, Jimmy Carpenter, Jimmy Miles, and Stu- dent Manager Rolla DuRand. BASKETBALL Nineteen boysj ported for basketball during the first week of m xice. This squad was soon divided into the “var ky” and second team. There were five lettermen on the varsity squad, which added much to the strength of the team. The first three games were lost to Kulm, Ellendale “Indees,” and Lisbon. The squad developed into a much better team the latter part of the season. In the Sub-District Tournament held at LaMoure, February 25 and 26, Ellendale defeated Klum and Dazy to get into the finals. Oakes took the cham- pionship game from Ellendale, 20-21. Ellendale lost to Oakes in the opening game of the Oakes Invita- tional Tournament, 23-29. Ellendale won the consola- tion game by defeating Lisbon 24-11. In the District Meet at Lisbon with Enderlin, Sheldon, Oakes, and Ellendale taking part, Ellen- dale defeated Sheldon, 32-19, to get into the cham- pionship game with Enderlin, who defeated Oakes. Ellendale lost the championship to Enderlin, 32-21. This gave Ellendale second place in the tournament. TRACK It is much too early to say much about the track season. There are only two lettermen left from the team last year, Meachen in the broad jump and dashes and Hafner in the hurdles and pole vault. There are also a number of experienced men who didn ' t earn a letter that have been in track compe- tition before. Fitzgerald, Hill (a letterman in ' 36), Anderson, and Tennant are the Seniors who have a chance to earn a letter this year. There are also some promising Juniors who also have a chance — Miles in the hurdles and Schmierer in the half mile. St. John, a Sophomore, is working hard on the weights. Speech Activities Another successful and eventful year in speech activities is nearing completion. Dramatics not only challenge the support and loyalty of the student body but are also a splendid way of raising money for other school activities and social events.
