REID Principal Recognized as an aggressive educa- tional leader of proven ability, and recognized by students as a friendly counselor and guide, Mr. C. F. Reid is completing his tenth year as the admin- istrative head of Elkville Community High School. A BOARD OF EDUCATION President. Fred Kuehng Secretary, I. W. Quigleyg Cecil Graeffg Otto E. Bourland. W' The start of the 1942-43 school term found the E.C.l-l.S. Board of Education composed of the following members: Mr. Russell Siefert, Presi- dentp l. W. Quigley, Secretaryg Mr. Fred Kuehn, Mr. Cecil Graeff, and Mr, Otto Bourland mem- bers. Early in the fall Mr. Siefert moved from Dowell to Murphysboro and so tendered his resignation as President and member of the Board. At the next meeting Mr. Fred Kuehn was elected by the remaining members as their President and has continued in that capacity throughout the year. At the present time no one has been appointed to fill the vacancy caused by Mr. Siefert's resignation. The Board of Education is that small group of citizens who get all the blame for mistakes at the school and seldom any credit for their time and effort to give to the community the type of school that they Want and can afford. This Board has been called upon to give more of their time than they would ordinarily be- cause of the many changes in the faculty and the acute conditions that have arisen from time to time because of War conditions. ln spite of all this, they have been able to keep E.C.l-l.S. up to par and even make improvements that were thought impossible. The annual staff joins with the rest of the school and the community in extending their sincere thanks to this Board of Education and hope that E.C.H.S. will always be fortunate enough to have men of their ability and sincere interest in the students' Welfare to guide the destiny of our school.

The purpose of the Council is to give the students A and organizations of our school a form of self-government. All kinds of prob- J! lems are brought before the Council to solve. The Student Council decorated the football field for the Homecoming Game in October. An assembly program was also given that afternoon. A new gas stove was purchased and placed in the laboratory. This proved very useful when refreshments were needed at parties and the funior Carnival. The faculty also cooked their lunches on it during noon hours. The scrap drive was planned by the Council. With the cooperation of the Whole school, it proved to be a great success. The Council purchased War stamps and the members took turns selling them at noon in the specially constructed booth. On December 7, this being the first anniversary of our entrance in the War, about twenty-eight dollars Worth of stamps were sold. , A picture of lack Williamson was bought to be hung in the assembly, as he was our first war casualty. lack was a former member of the Student Council. The building was decorated at Christmas by the Council. A program was given in which the assembly joined in the singing. Gifts were exchanged, including the contents of the fun box. 1103
