The Elks lost to Castlewood (12-0) and defeated Deubrook (12-6) and Lake Preston (12-6). This year's team had only one player with previous experience so we felt it was important to spend playing games. From that standpoint the season was a great success be- cause the improvement from the first day of practice until the first game was tremendous. The team was eager to learn and ap- pears to be reason for a great deal of optimism about the future of Elk football. Homecoming 1987 Homecoming Attendants were Tron Even. JoAnn Br Oder sen. Coach's comments: The varsity team enjoyed a successful season. They showed the kind of determination and character that all coach's try to find. The personality of the group was to bounce back after a loss with renewed commitment. They set their sights on a region tourney appearance and achieved that goal. Even though few people outside the team mem- bers believed in them, they did not get discouraged and never gave up hope. They always pulled together when they needed to and over- came their obstacles. The accomplishments of this group of ladies as a basketball team shows that they all are destined to be winners in life. Their ability to face adversity with courage and confidence will lead them through rewarding and happy lives. Our com- bined record was 13-6. The girls showed a great deal of improvement throughout the season. Our eighth graders showed great leadership and determination in their games. They were very helpful and encouraging to the seventh grade players, who did an excel- lent job of filling in during eighth grade games. This group of young ladies showed that they have a lot of talent. With continued determi- nation and dedicated practice, they will have a bright basketball future. Tina Knutson Girls Cross Country: This years team is proof that when a team sets high goals and becomes dedi- cated to those goals, great things can happen. The girls won four championships, including the confer- ence championship. They were runners up three times and finished seventh in the state meet. I am proud to have been the coach of these girls. The seniors will be missed next year and at the same time, the future looks good because of the younger people who will be back. If next years people will set their goals as high, I believe that what they set out to do this year will be accomplished. Boys Cross Country: As a team we got off to a poor start. We lost two runners because of illness or injury for the season. Even though things did not go as I had hoped there were some good things that hap- pened. We had our top varsity runner go under 18:00. We also had our top junior varsity runner win the conference. This years team kept the hope alive for next year. I know that the runners are the only ones that understand what I just mentioned, but for that reason, I am proud of them. The 1987 state CC qualifiers. back row: JoAnn Br Oder sen. The most rewarding team accomplishments were both teams winning the Dakota Valley Conference meet and the boys team finishing 5th in the State meet. I am very proud of all our track people. We will miss the seniors but know that they have set examples by their work, goals and accomplishments that will have an impact on seasons to come. These seniors have proved that if you set goals and work hard you can be successful. They had their share of setbacks from time to time, but they never quit on themselves. In the end they accomplished a goal of being the best they could be. For a track coach, this is the greatest reward, and why I am so proud of these people and look forward to the future with undercloss athletes who will be tomorrow's seniors.
