The hard hitting and exciting style of play earned the team the respect of EDC opponents. The Elks also won their first homecoming game in many years. Coach Field commented, “We improved our record and accom- plished some of the things that hadn't been done in many years. We are proud of these kids and their efforts. Changing tradition doesn't come easily, but these players put forth the needed effort for a change. We look forward to even bigger accomplishments next year. Although the Jr. High football team was short on num- bers. their season can be considered a huge success. Coach Swenson quoted. I have never seen a group improve more during the course of a season. Kids who started the season just out for football because of peer pressure gained pride in themselves for what they ac- complished and really learned to love the game of foot- ball. The first game of the season the kids just wanted to get the game over. By the end of the season, they were begging me to ask opponents to play longer quar- ters and to call Deubrook and demand a rematch.” SCORES Elkton Opponent 0 Deubrook 26 14 Ivanhoe 20 8 Lake Benton 0 22 Castlewood 0 32 Lake Preston 0 Junior high cheerleaders, left to right: Kari Thompson. The girls' team received many setbacks during the year because of injuries. Yet this group of girls did achieve. They won the Flandreau JV meet, they finished 2nd to Arlington in the confer- ence and went on to qualify Jennifer Bauer and Sharon Lamp for the state meet. The boys team was led by three seniors: Brian Kramer, Steve Lytle, and David Fuhr. These three seniors have compiled over 4,000 miles of work in Elkton's Cross Country program. This year’s team placed 2nd in the conference to Deubrook and qualified as a team for the state meet. This marked the 15th consecutive year that Elkton has won a right to the state meet. The girls' team is young and will return a team that can, if they prevent injuries, contend for the state crown.
