This program is on the move up. I'm not going to lie and say that we were satis- fied with a 2-6 record. I think you have to look at the progress we made. To totally change a program takes time. Sure you can from time to time have a good group of athletes and have a good year; but if what you are trying to do is make a pro- gram competitive year in and year out, you need to start with the youth and build. If you have a successful team year after year, it is because you have devel- oped solid coaching and leadership at the elementary and junior high levels. This is where the kids gain interest and learn the fundamentals. Our varsity record of 2-6 in no way re- flects the effort that was put forth by these athletes. They worked their tails off all season long, even after we knew that the playoffs were out of the picture. Front row: Gary McDowell, Lon Hemmen. Bob Lynn, Brent Thompson, Frank Davis and Randy Kampmann. This reminds me of a motto that I picked up at a clinic this past summer. The kids have all heard this before. When you wake up every morning, you have two choices. To work as hard as possible for success or not to work hard. Just two easy choices. The bad thing is this, just because you get up every day and work as hard as possible — it doesn't guaran- tee success, but if you don't work hard, you don't even have a chance. Somewheredn the future, persistent hard work will gain dividends. Our football season doesn't start in June or July or August. It continues year round. Kids are in the weight room every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday night looking to gain that edge, working hard. This is how tradition is-built. We were playing the number three ranked team in the state, the Castlewood Warriors. I'm sure they came into the contest somewhat overlooking us. The game was a good one. They led at half time 8-6 and came out in the third quarter and scored twice early. 1 can remember looking back and seeing cars leaving, people thinking the game was over. They scored once more, making the score 26-6 early in the fourth quarter. We began to score. Bearing failure, a kick attempt was tried with a little over a minute to go. We could have very easily won the game. The final score was 21-26. What happened at the final gun was really something. As the Castlewood players walked off the field with their heads to the ground, our players and fans huddled at mid-field for a break on Elk Pride. In their hearts we won that football game. To this day I can never remember another time that after losing a game, I felt as if we had really won. 6 By Coach Jef Field s This year's Little Brown Jug was awarded to the Junior Class for their episode of All My Players. With the only senior being the only returning starter, it was a year to gain experience for the team. The girls showed a great deal of improvement and character as the season progressed. Although their record was very competitive in most games, it was our lack of experience late in the game that allowed many teams to win close games with us. The year provided valuable experiences will help shape the teams for the follow- ing years. The B Team was inexperienced be- cause the B Team members last year had moved to the A team. The team got along well, which helped them establish great teamwork. This season was a very educational and fun experience for the seventh and eighth grade girls. We had a shortage of eighth graders on the team, but it was overshadowed by our abundance of enthusiasm. The girls played with extreme dedication and desire. We all gained lots of valuable experience and saw the areas we need to work to improve. This was a great group of athletes to work with. They have a great desire to work hard and to be their best. I think they have a very bright future ahead of them. 11 CROSS COUNTRY David Fuhr and Steve Lytle checking out the starting line. Here comes Bob!! Amy Fuhr running for Elk Pride! Far Right: Vince giving a helpful pep talk before the race. 12 COACH VINCENT'S COMMENTS. . . Cross Country Girls 1986 The Elkton Girls Cross Country team moved closer to the goals they set a year ago. They want to become the best in the state, with a young team (no Juniors or Seniors). This team became Conference Champions for the second consecutive year and then one week later, became the Champions of Region 1-B. The team then went on to finish fifth in the state. Finishing fifth in the state was a great accomplish- ment. We have a young team with super individuals. Jennifer Bauer became a great team leader and along with Amy Fuhr and Michelle Gilbertson, the trio be- came a team of championship-minded people. This team had others who also really came on and added to this year's strength. Patty Davis keeps improving and at times was our third runner. Also Tina Knutson and Irene Gebhart gave us the strength to compete in any size meet. If this group can keep the dream alive I really feel they are destined to become State Champi- ons!! Cross Country Boys 1986 This year the Elkton Boys Cross Country team had many things to prepare for and a short time to do them. Elkton had only one established runner from last years team. This was David Fuhr and once again he led the way for the Elkton team. But, the Elks needed someone to run with David. It didn't take long as Steve Lytle came on with his best year as a runner. Elkton also needed the third runner and by Confer- ence time. Bob Lynn filled that role. Along with Ted Smallfield and Jeff Dobesh, the team won the Confer- ence, finished second in the Region and eleventh in the State. I am proud to have coached this group of athletes. We wanted to win the Conference because it would make for ten consecutive years Elkton teams have won. These kids ran with a lot of heart to accomplish this. They were also able to qualify for the state and im- prove last year’s finish. In what was a slow start turned into a championship year. We had people come through at the times we needed it the most. The Elkton Volleyball Squad did not have a lot of wins this past season, but did start a trend for future volleyball stars. The first year team had to learn a lot in a short period of time, and did well in putting all aspects of the game in place. Determination, potential, and fundamental drilling were the keys to the season. As the number of matches played increased, so did the improvement on the court. The statistics showed steady improvement and individual statistics began to climb. For team totals, the Elks served 72%, having 27 ace serves for the season. Team serve reception was 53%, a little lower than one would like, but still a good percent for the first year. When the season came to an end in the Regional Tournament, the squad picked these awards to be given to their fellow teammates: Team Co-Captains for 1987: Amy Fuhr, Missy Lynn; Most Improved: Irene Gebhart, Tiana Adams; Spirit and Hustle: Missy Lynn; Sportsmanship: Amy Fuhr; Coaches' Award (given by coaches): Tiana Adams, Heather Rohrer. The skills of volleyball have been exposed, next year will prove to be a bigger and better challenge for all who participate. by Coach Ralsten 15 SPORTS '86 16 JR. HIGH BASKETBALL This is the first year of Elkton High School's SADD Organization. SADD, which stands for Students Against Driving Drunk, proved to be very successful, in both the community and school. Elkton had 8 SADD Representatives who planned the activities for all members in grades 7-12. The activities they had were a Christmas dance and a Spring dance with a VCR party. They gave away prizes from var- ious businesses in the community. Coach's Comments: The 7th grade team had a record of 9 and 3. They had enthu- siasm for every game they played and won many by one or two points. The 8th grade team won 4 and lost 10. Their losses were by 2 points or less. They never gave up, they have a never quit attitude. Our number 1 problem was scoring points. Their shooting will come with time and practice. Steve Leech, Colby Tolk and Steve Lytle. The 1985-86 junior varsity team finished their season on a positive note winning the last six ballgames. That enabled them to complete their season with a 12-8 record. Coach Field had these comments about the team, I think the biggest obstacle we had to overcome was the lack of leadership. Most of the kids we had playing were good ballplayers. They and a lot of abili- ty but had never been responsible to carry the load, so to speak. They always had other players to do that for them. You have to have a leader out on the floor, someone to make the big play in tight situations. Early in the year we didn't have that. In fact, at one point in the season, right after the Clear Lake game, we had lost 3 of the 4 games that were decided by 5 points or less.’ Those types of loses can really hurt you down the road. To be a champion you have to be able to win these kinds of games consistently. We had a very emotional talk after that Clear Lake game. We talked about the leadership and also the importance of every possession of the ball. The ability put teams away when the op- portunity exists whether it be early or late in the game also was mentioned. The talk must have done some good. The leaders stepped forward from then on. Allen Henningen and Brian Kramer started to really come on. Other players also showed signs of leadership. We went on to win the next four games that were divided by the same point spread mentioned earlier. This lead- ership and dedication by these individuals may be the boost the Elks need to win that long awaited State championship. Some of these were placing first in the BOAC contest and receiving the Governor's Citation, receiving first place in the State Su- perior Chapter Award and first place in the Triple Crown Award Contest. We also had two State Farmer applicants who received the degree at the state convention. They were Frank Davis and Brent Thompson.
