THIS IS THE YEAR OF THE ELK-1979 You've come a long way, Baby!! The girls' basketball team finisned second in the conference standings. They also placed 5th in the Conference Tourney. The girls finished the season with a 14-7 record. November 13, the girls were crowned District 10 champs. Beating the Flandreau Fliers in the semi-finals 31-30, sent them to the championship game against a tough Deubrook team. The Elks got it together to pull off a 42- 34 win. The girls met the Clear Lake Cardinals in tne first round of region play, losing 57-46. They were defeated in tne consolation play with the Hamlin Chargers, by a score of 43-39 in over- time. The girls compiled a record of 8 wins and 6 losses. The girls were very competitive as all the games were close with 2 of the losses being by only 1 point. Ro- chelle and Gayle led the team in scoring and rebounding with 80 points each and94 and 93 rebounds respectively. Gayle led the team in shooting with 29% from the field and 6 from the FT line. Shelly led in assists with 27. Gayle was voted Most Valuable Player while Dorothy was voted Most Improved.
