Being No. 1 Was Always On Our Minds Three boys accomplished a most unusual feat on Saturday, October 28, 1978. Everett and Ervin Gebhart along with Chuck Lorden, paced Elkton's Class B state high school cross-country championship. What's so unusual? Well, the trio won with a perfect score of six. Hard to say when a perfect score was last seen. Mark Melcher of Java was the B champion with a time of 16:28, but he was not entered in the race with a full team. Everett was second at 16:54, Ervin third at 16:58, and Chuck fourth at 16:59. Elkton's fourth runner on the championship team was Dan Knuth, who placed 47th at 18:31. In the midst of all the excitement on this cold and overcast afternoon at the Edgebrook Golf Course, the team talked about the goals they had set upon entering high school. They had wanted to bring to Elkton a state championship in cross-country—and they did! In commenting Coach Vincent said, I am extremely proud of what these guys accomplished. It proves that if you set goals and dedicate yourself to achieving them that it can be done. All year the thoughtof the state meet has been on their minds; not of which individual was going to win, but that they would each do their best to see that Elkton won. 10
