THE ELK Volume XXIII Elkton Independent School District 5-3 Elkton, South Dakota 57026 All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time play: many parts. 2 The Curtain Opens On A New Year ... Boy, you're a drag! Well, I never!!! This place is driving me crazy!!! I hope no one saw that! Stre-e-e-tch!!! Wouldn't a shovel work better?! s The School Becomes A Dramatic Spectacle Working Together ... 8 To Make The Year A Success. SPORTS Being No. 1 Was Always On Our Minds Three boys accomplished a most unusual feat on Saturday, October 28, 1978. Everett and Ervin Gebhart along with Chuck Lorden, paced Elkton's Class B state high school cross-country championship. What's so unusual? Well, the trio won with a perfect score of six. Hard to say when a perfect score was last seen. Mark Melcher of Java was the B champion with a time of 16:28, but he was not entered in the race with a full team. Everett was second at 16:54, Ervin third at 16:58, and Chuck fourth at 16:59. Elkton's fourth runner on the championship team was Dan Knuth, who placed 47th at 18:31. In the midst of all the excitement on this cold and overcast afternoon at the Edgebrook Golf Course, the team talked about the goals they had set upon entering high school. They had wanted to bring to Elkton a state championship in cross-country—and they did! In commenting Coach Vincent said, I am extremely proud of what these guys accomplished. It proves that if you set goals and dedicate yourself to achieving them that it can be done. All year the thoughtof the state meet has been on their minds; not of which individual was going to win, but that they would each do their best to see that Elkton won. 10 11 State runners honored at assembly. Only 1.8 miles to go! A Year Of Dreams Come True Kneeling I to r: L. Gebhart, D. Stein, D. Stein, T. Lorden, E. Gebhart, D. Knuth, E. Gebhart, J. Rykhus, DeVries, L. Bauer, Coach T. Vincent. The Elks played two of their poorest games against Willow Lake, and Doland during the season. However, the Elks defeated their arch-rival, Deubrook, which is always a sweet victory. Elkton was led offensively by Brad Heesch with 421 yards rushing in 109 carries. Craig Biggar led in passing with 51 completions in 112 attempts for 600 yards. Defensively, Craig Biggar had an outstanding year with 130 tackles. Mike Ponto and Craig Biggar were named to the all-conference team, (pictured at right) Though we will miss our five Seniors, who contributed greatly to the team this year, the coaching staff and team are enthusiastically looking forward to next year with the return of fifteen lettermen. Have 7-11 Season Coach Brown commented, if you measure a team by how much it improves during a season, the Girls basketball team had a very successful season. We were an inexperienced team at the start of the year and it just took some time for us to put things together. Our record of 7-11 is very deceiving. We lost a lot of ball games that could have gone either way early in the year. In the last three weeks we played our best basketball and we started to win some games. We really felt that we could win the District, but the ball just wouldn't fall through the basket. I guess it just wasn't meant to be. The year was a learning process for all of us, and I enjoyed working with the girls. We will miss the Seniors who have contributed much to the Girls program over the last four years. We are looking forward to a very successful season next year. OK, Let's show 'em our stuff! 17 B Team Has Rewarding Season Front row: Lynnette Landsman, Rochelle Lytle, Halstead, Jenifer Anderson, Trudy Hart, Laura Shelly Jensen. Year The B Team ended the year a 7-9 record. The team participated in the Rutland Tournament for the second year and captured third again. In first round action of the tourney they came back to defeat Oldham in the second round, with Lynnette Landsman scoring 31 points. Girls receiving awards were: MVP, Lynnette Landsman, Best Offensive Player, Carol Claussen, Best Defensive Player, Rochelle Lytle, Most Improved, Trudy Hart. 18 The Celebration Of Winning District X '2 f i bl Defeating Deubrook 55-48 and then Sioux Valley 55-50 in a double overtime for the District X Championship was a dream come true. The whole town celebrated after two nerve-wracking games. A three mile caravan of cars met the player bus; and players, cheerleaders, and fans went to the Knotty Pine for steaks. Support for the Elks was fantastic the week of the tournaments. A sign on Main Street said it all, The last one to leave town, turn the lights out! Girf E.H.S. Presents Bishop or no Bishop, I will not be prayed for In Public!!!!! Father tries out a sermon Hello Tokyo ... on Mother. Georgie displays the fight to his Mother. Frazer Spence getting Molly is worried about ready for a sermon. the carillon. Major Cooper and Mrs. Sandow meet Father and Mother. Hartzel and Eileen dance for Ronny. Oh yes I will!!!!! Doc. Romer checks Fathers injured leg. The rundown parsonage at their new parish came as a shock ... but that was only the beginning. Rev. Spence found the church building coming apart, the congregation split into warring factions and the choir a cross between the devil's grandmother and swarm of mountain wildcats. Eileen and Hartzell, his teen-age children, were disgusted at having been yanked our a comfortable parsonage and a fine high school. But then Hartzell met pretty Louise, and Eileen was Introduced to Ronny. The humorous complications that resulted make even more difficulties for Rev. Spence. His struggle to build a new choir, and crush intolerence, leads to a pitched battle among his flock, and then the very threat of being dismissed for the clergy. On the day he was to leave for the conference to defend himself. Rev. Spence had a minor accident that put him in bed. At the same time, Hartzell's personal complications have led him not only to the brink of romantic disaster, but right Into the local jail! And just when the entire future of the Spence family depends on him. Now who screwed this up? Hey Tom, 3's a crowd!!!! You can open your eyes now, Leslie!!! Decorating for the Junior-Senior banquet and prom began in the gym on Tuesday, May 8th, with miles of crepe paper being unrolled and wire being strung. After days of hard work (and a trip to Sioux City for more crepe paper) the gym was transformed into a beautiful blue, green, and yellow setting for Prom '79. The banquet, held at St. Mary's School, was a delicious meal catered by Blue Mound of Minnesota. Ervin Gebhart and Brad Heesch read the prophecy for the Class of '79, while David Diedrich and Lynda Hegerfeld narrated the class wills. Pastor S.C. Shearer gave the invocation and benediction. At the dance, everyone danced to the music of HUSH , and enjoyed GOOD punch. Prom '79 was a success and as the wire and crepe paper came down, it all seemed worth it! 45 Elkettes' New Uniforms Add A Nice Touch L. to R. 1st row: Joan Janssen, Jeannie Culhane, 4th row: Laureen Herrick; 5th row: Mary Halstead, Helen Willert, Nancy Kurtz; 2nd row: Sue Wolkow; 3rd Connie Kramer, Kelly Hammer, Shelia Finley, Diane row: Jolene Vaske, Carol Claussen, Shirley Janssen; Lorden. In the classroom, we use a different approach to learning letters as we looked at a letter and then said all sounds that the letter would make. Our five senses unit was especially good when we could SEE, HEAR, SMELL, FEEL, and TASTE the hot chocolate and popcorn the teacher made. We took a trip to the fire station and dentist office this year. We also decorated Valentine cookies in February, and put a circus program on for our parents and made our own circus masks. Title I Program The purpose of the Title I program is to help strengthen areas of study in which students may need reinforcing outside of the regular classroom. Title I teachers emphasize basic skills by working with the students on an individual basis. Mrs. Isabelle Short (upper right) has been with the Elkton School District for fifteen years. She is presently the elementary school principal, and is in charge of the Title I reading program. (Counter clockwise) Next is Mrs. Faye Ishmael who is in her second year at Elkton and assists Mrs. Short with the reading program in her capacity as teacher's aide. Center is Mrs. Nancy Wiskur, who is in her fifth year at Elkton. Mrs. Wiskur is in charge of the Title I math program. Assisting her as a teacher's aide is Lori McDowell. Mrs. McDowell is a 1976 graduate of Elkton High School and this is her first year as teacher's aide. 56 Scene Four Administration Administration Acts Produce Results Joyce Kramer is Elkton's girl Friday keeping the front office running smoothly. There may be only one time that you do not see Joyce with a smile, and that is if you forget your lunch ticket money! John Bauer (middle right) keeps busy supervising the Title program for the system. As counselor, he also conducts yearly group testing of the Freshmen and Juniors much to their dislike. After ten years as Superintendent, Don Rykhus (Above), will be moving on to bigger and better things since he resigned to take a new position at Onida. Mr. Rykhus saw Elkton District through the construction of the new gym as one of his accomplishments. And he can be commended for keeping an experienced staff and supporting all academic and extra-curricular areas in the school. Thank you, Mr. Rykhus, for a fine job, and The Elk staff wishes you the best of luck in your new venture! Mr. Schneider will be leaving Elkton High School after fifteen years of service as classroom teacher and secondary principal. He taught government and social studies for five years, and has been principal for the last ten, as well as government instructor and athletic •director. An easy person to talk to would describe Mr. Schneider and his presence will be missed at the athletic events which he strongly supported. A job well done , Mr. Schneider, and good luck in your new endeavor! 58 School Board members above I to r: Bernice Nelson, Pres. Rufus DeZeeuw, George Montgomery, Donald Stein, and C. B. McKeown. Decisions involving the efficient running of a school are not always easy to make, and the Elkton School Board was faced with many this year. Early fall started out smoothly with discussions on the teacher's handbook, appointing committees, and attending special meetings in Sioux Falls to become better acquainted with legislative action pending involving public education. The end of the year was more difficult with the resignation of the superintendent and secondary principal becoming a primary concern for the Board. New applicants had to be carefully screened and teacher negotiations had to be resolved so that a smooth transition could be made into the next school year.________________ To the left is Barbara Swift who is in her second year as Business Manager for the Elkton district. Barb's pleasant smile can be seen often around the school as she balances the books and battles the mountains of paperwork that passes through her office. _____________ 59 Teachers Direct Nicki Brooks Besides teaching Spanish, English I III, Mrs. Brooks is advisor for the Yearbook The Homecoming Variety Show.
