History of the Class of 1958, Elkton High School FRESHMAN YEAR, 1954-55 In the fall of 1954, twenty-one freshmen entered the doors of Elkton high school. As in other years, che freshmen were initiated by the sophomores in October. In February, 1955, the freshmen gave a return party. Officers for that year were Janet Hegerfeld, president; William Vaske, vice-president; Roger Bauer, secretary; and Wilbur Latham, treasurer. Supt. Ekberg was class adviser. Betty Moulton and Sharon Jacobsen left the class and Clarice Wright came to EHS. Clarice Wright and Lester Kramer were king and queen candidates for the carnival. SOPHOMORE YEAR, 1955-56 In the fall of 1955, the class started with twenty-three members. Walter Zie- barth, Marlayne Elverud, and James Bullis joined the class. In turn, the sopho- mores initiated the freshmen in September. Class officers were Marlayne Elverud, president; Lester Kramer, vice-presi- dent, and Clarice Wright, secretary-treasurer. Mr. Bohuslav was the class adviser. In the spring of 1956, two members left the class and two members joined the class. JUNIOR YEAR. 1956-57 The year 1956-57 was a busy year for the juniors. The junior enrollment was twenty-two, and the officers were Wilbur Latham, president; Monte Harming, vice- president; Janet Hegerfeld, secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Lioyd Wallace, homemaking teacher, was the adviser. Qi November 17, under the direction of Mrs. Willace, the play Murder She Says” was presented. In the spring of 1957 the juniors entertained the seniors at a banquet and prom with the Gay 90's and Showboat combined as a theme. Leo Fortin pro- vided the music for this affair which was held May 9. Honors came to the class members. Lester Kramer was chosen Boys Stater, Janet Hegerfeld was Girls Stater, and Fhtty Ellis was selected by the Elkton Women's Club to attend music camp at Vermillion. SENIOR YEAR, 1957-58 The senior year the class of 1958 had twenty-one members. Class officers for this year were Lester Kramer, president; Janet Hegerfeld, secretary-treasurer; Ruth Ann Schaffer, vice-president; Supt. Verle Heiter, and Mr. Qiincey, class ad- visers. Mr. Lloyd Larson directed the senior play Jumping Jewels which was presented on December 18,1957. Again, honors were received by members of the Class of '58-----Monte Harming was editor of the yearbook, THE ELK; Ruth Ann Schaffer was selected DAR candidate; Marlayne Elverud won the Betty Crocker homemaker of tomorrow award. Lester Kramer and Marie McClemans were the homecoming lord and lady. The year came to a close May 22, 1958, with Janet Hegerfeld as valedictorian and Roy Bebensee as salutatorian. 8
