Their purpose is to control the property and the programs of the school. Some of the works they have accomplished in the past years are adding an Ag Building and a Music Department to the school. He has participated in basketball, football, track, FFA, journalism, and declam. He was in the class play, mixed chorus , mixed octet, a reporter of the E Club, a king candidate, class officer, and a member of the student council. Dorothy Bebensee Bubbling over with good humor. She has taken part in FHA, glee club, phys. ed., journalism, dramatics, and library. She was also an office helper and hot lunch helper. Mary Ann Burlage Late hours are not good for one, but they are alright for two. She was active in band, FHA, journalism, class play, glee club, phys. ed., and library. Eldon Ekberg Intelligence, a mark of distinction. He attended Gayville High School three years. He was outstanding in music, taking part in mixed octet, boys octet, mixed chorus, band, trio, quar- tet, and solo work. He took part in football, basketball, track, declam, dramatics, and FFA. Eldon was a member of G Club, E Club, student council, and was a class officer, and busi- ness manager of the Annual. He attended Boy's State, and has received a Scholastic Award. Roma Fulmer Leadership is an admirable quality. She took part in FHA, journalism, phys. ed., dramatics, class play, and library. She was co-editor of the Elk-O-Gram, class president, studenl council secretary, and office helper. Carolyn Halstead Her sense of humor brings her many friends. She took part in phys. ed., FHA, journalism, and library. She was class president, member of the student council, and in the class play. Beverly Heesch It's nice to be nice when you're naturally nice. She took part in FHA, journalism, cheer- leading, glee club, band, and phys. ed. She was on the Elk-O-Gram staff, a librarian, queen candidate and homecoming attendant. Colleen Heffeman Music and love make her life complete. She was outstanding in music having participated in glee club and band. She was in the octet, and did solo work. Colleen also took part in FHA, journalism, library, declam, dramatics, phys. ed., and was a class officer and student coun- cil member. Rose Marie Howell Intelligence brings her envied grades She participated in journalism, dramatics, glee club, and phys. ed. She was also librarian and hot lunch helper. Audrey Karstens A friend in need is a friend indeed. She attended Brookings High School for one year. She was active in journalism, library, phys. ed., and FHA. Pete Kelly The best things come in small packages. Pete has taken part in basketball, football, track, FFA. band, and journalism. He was in the class play, a king candidate, president of E club, a class officer, member of student council, and attended Boy's State. Marvin Kick Work has made this man lean. He attended Brookings High School for two years. He took part in FFA, football, and basketball. Virgil Kock Women and wine make the world go round. Virgil took part in basketball, class play, FFA, journalism, mixed chorus and mixed octet. He was also a class officer, FFA officer and on the student council. Arlene Kroeger A smile for everyone from the bottom of her heart. Arlene has taken part in FHA, glee club, phys. ed., and journalism. She was a class officer, member of the student council, and a librarian. Darlene Krogmann When she’s around there is always fun. She was active in FHA, journalism, phys. ed., li- brary vid helped with the hot lunches. Marlys Landsman Silence is an art of conversation. Marlys was active in journalism, glee club, phys. ed., and FHA. She was co-editor of the Elk-O-Gram, assistant art editor of the annual, DAR repre - sentative, in the hall of fame and attended Brookings Ifigh School one year. Virginia Mielke A smile makes the best of friends. Virginia participated in FHA, glee club, phys. ed.. li- brary, journalism, and dramatics. Delillah Moulton Hmm those dark eyes! She was active in glee club, journalism, FHA, dramatics, and librarian. 8 was a Wesley Moulton Girls are bothersome but I like to be bothered. Wesley was active in basketball, class play, FFA, and journalism. He also was a class officer, on the student council, and an FFA officer. Jeanette Peterson She is as kind as she is fair. Jeanette was a librarian, office helper, queen candidate, home- coming attendant, year book editor, and class president. She also took part in glee club, phys. ed., journalism, and dramatics. Joan Peterson She says what she thinks. Joan was active in glee club, journalism, phys. ed., library, mixed chorus, class play, and dramatics. She was also an office helper, on the student council, and a homecoming attendant. Geneva Welsh Likeable as she is lookable. During Geneva’s four years in high school she was active in journalism, phys. ed., glee club, FHA, cheerleading, library, dramatics, and hall of fame. Geneva was also our homecoming queen. Mary Buchholtz A member of the class of 1954, plans to graduate at a later date. 9 CLASS HISTORY In 1950 twenty two freshmen enrolled In Elktan High School. They elected Colleen Heffernan as their class president; Dick Bartelt. vice president; Peter Kelly, secretary-treasurer; and Mrs. Ellis Pierce advisor. Beverly Heesch and Dick Hammer were king and queen candidates. In 1951 twenty two sophomores enrolled with Dick Hammer and Eugene Trulock leaving and Marlys Landsman and Audrey Karstens taking their places. They chose Roma Fulmer as their class president; Virgil Kock, vice president; Arlene Kroeger, secretary-treasurer; and William Quincey, advisor. Elaine Miller and Dick Bartelt were chosen as the king and queen candidates. There were twenty three juniors enrolling in 1952 when Marvin Kick joined the class. Carolyn Hal- stead was chosen president; Wesley Moulton, vice president; Joan Peterson, secretary-treasurer; and Mrs. Ervin Kurtz, advisor. They presented the class play, Ryme and Ryme Again. The junior-senior banquet was given with a Hawaiian theme. Jeanette Peterson and Peter Kelly were the king and queen candidates. Twenty three seniors returned for their last year in 1953. Eldon Ekberg came in to take Elaine Miller’s place. They chose Jeanette Peterson as their president; Eldon Ekberg,vice president; Arlene Kroeger, secretary-treasurer; and Harrison J. Welch, advisor. Geneva Welsh was chosen as homecom- ing queen. They have been very active in a number of extra-curricular activities. JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY The junior class which consisted of twenty members embarked upon their high school education in the fall of 1951. This year Janice Kontz was added to the class. They presented the junior play , “Deadly Ernest, with Mr. William Quincey as director. They also sponsored a magazine drive . Plans are being made for the junior-senior banquet to be held in the spring. Class officers are: President-Janice Kontz, Vice Pres.-Janice Mundahl, Sec. Treas.-Joan Even. Co- editors for the first semester of the year were Marlys Landsman and Roma Fulmer. Co-editors for the last semester of the year were Joan Even and Janice Mundahl. Bill Seivert was Assistant- editor. Six members of the staff-Joan Even, Jeanette Peterson, Geneva Welsh, Carole Burlage, Mar- lys Landsman, and Roma Fulmer—attended the 29th conventional South Dakota High School Press Association Convention at Brookings on October 3. GLEE CLUB The glee club under the direction of Mrs. Heartz consists of twenty mem- bers. On April 9 the glee club entered the Region III music contest at Brookings. BAND The Elkton High School band was organized this year by Mrs. Heartz, tne di- rector. The band consists of thirty-two members. There are two sections the A band and the B band. The A band has played at' various school activities. Some of them are the homecoming, football games, bas- ketball games, and the District tournament. Nancy Buchholtz, coronet soloist, chose as her selection “Forest Echoes’ . Evonne Ekberg who plays the flute, selected the songs “Santa Lucia and London- derry Air . Jean Blomgren s trumpet solo was “Spinning Song . 22 HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT HOME EC. II In Elkton High School three years of Home making are offered in a modern equipped department. The kitchen department is equipped with modern style cabinets, refrigerator, and this year two late model stoves were added. These things give the girls actual practice in planning and preparing meals. In the sewing unit there are electric sewing ma- chines that give the girls opportunity to make cloth- ing articles for themselves. Besides this the depart- ment offers units in family relations, marriage and careers, and costume designs, as well as many other crafts and hobbies. HOME EC. I There are forty members in the Elkton Chapter F.H.A.. Our organization is a na- tional affiliation association sponsored by the American Home Economics Association. The advisor of F.H.A. is Mrs. Kurtz. The organization has a business meeting on the third Wednesday of each month and a social meeting on the second Monday of each month. HOT LUNCH The Elkton Public School has par- ticipated in the Hot Lunch Program for 11 years. Mrs. McMahon and her helpers serve about 90 pupils per day. The fee for the meal is 1.00 a week for each pupil. There has been a stove installed this year in the hot lunch room. AG DEPARTMENT The agriculture department of Elkton High School was established for the term of 1951 and 1952 with Peter Hodial as instructor. This department was established with the sole purpose of offering a profit- able four-year course of shop and agricultural instruction for all high school boys. F. F. A. The Elkton Chapter of the F. F. A. was founded during the same term as the agriculture department. This nationally known organization is recognized the country over as a contructive organization, that trains young man into being better and stronger farmers. One of the highlights of this organization since its founding in Elkton was the National F. F. A. Convention held in Kansas City, Mo. in which two Elkton boys were delegates, W. Moulton and V. Kock. A new attraction this year was the construction of lights at the field, making most of the games at night. A special fea- ture was our Homecoming, Oct. 2, in which the Elks defeated Bruce after a hard fought game. This year tne team lacked weight, but made up for it in teamwork and speed. They plan to attend the Regional Track Meet and others of the season. A-TEAM The Elk’s 1953-1954 basketball season consisted of many interesting and close scored games. Elkton belongs to the Upper Sioux and Sioux Valley conferences,of which the former has recently been organized as a Hickory Stick unit. E CLUB The E Club was organized this year by the lettermen. The officers are: pres.-Peter Kelly; vice pres.-Charles Heesch; sec.-treas.-Eldon Ekberg; reporter-Donald Bar- telt. CHEERLEADERS The cheerleaders were elected by a vote of the student body. The girls attended all the games. Anita Kramer was the substitute. 32 COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT The commercial department, this year under the supervision of Mrs. Guss, offers to the students courses in bookkeeping, typing, and office-practice.
