Vocational classes at Elko High School in- clude drafting, auto, electronics, construc- tion, cabinet furniture, vocational agricul- ture, commercial art, business occupations, and home economics. The Elko High voca- tional classes are all the very best the State of Nevada has to offer, and anyone who takes these classes will be ready to compete in the very competitive world of different voca- tions. There are four vocational clubs at Elko High School. They are: V.I.C.A., F.F.A., F.B.L.A., and F.H.A. The requirement for membership in any of these clubs is current enrollment in a related class. Anyone in any vocational class can join V.I.C.A. These clubs are all a lot of fun, a great way to prepare for a future career, meet other people. Find out about further training, and hear from the pros what it really takes to become a success. We do better than anybody in the state. KEITH AIKENHEAD, DRAFTING INSTRUCTOR 30 Draftsmen learn to speak the language of lines, symbols, and numbers; the language that has created modern civilization. We find our way in the world thanks to surveyors and mapmakers, and we owe thanks for the things we use and the machines which make them to architects and draftsmen. They are responsible for the development of the homes we live in, the structures we drive on, the centers we shop in, and the clothes we buy there. Everything we touch which is made by the hands and machines of man, began as a set of drawings. Students at Elko High School are preparing themselves for this reality by practice, practice, practice. They find that great art ability isn't a necessity to produce great works of functional art, and it is exciting for them to see their 2-D pictures used to create a 3-D reality. We listen, learn .. . . . . and we work hard. LEARNING TO PLAN TOMORROW’S WORLD 34 I’d better get an A” for this. What planet are you from? I don’t think that THAT was a fire drill. Don’t look! Maybe he won’t notice us. What do you mean that we could be suspended for stacking his locker? You won’t find an electronics program anywhere that is more on the cutting edge of technology than right here at Elko High School. Mr. Williams has patiently labored many extra hours so students can have experience in such varied areas as: Digital Electronics, Microprocessing, Video Equipment, Lasers, Teletype, and all kinds of electronic equipment servicing. They even built a robot named ’’Hero” from scratch; and yes, he even talks. This is not just a theory curriculum; people get hands on experience! Left: Pat Blach contemplating an electronics problem. Top: Matt Newville hard at work. Electronics 4 Classes- Experiencing the Future Today Another lost Freshman! Dyann: Congratulations on all that you have achieved! We hope your future brings as much love and light into your world as you’ve shared with us! Love always, Dad, Mom, Albert Karen Dear Nicole, Climb High Climb Far Your Goal the Sky Your Aim the Star. We love you Mom, Dad, Debie, Kristina 39 Outstanding Girl Outstanding Boy enms uist Chances are that if you were lost, it was Dennis Quist who guided you on your way. Dennis is the one at Elko High School who has always been ready to lend anyone a helping hand. He has been extra dedicated to everything he has done at EHS. Dennis has been supporting the tenor section of the Choraliers for four years, and he has lended his voice to the drama department, too. He has played four years of basketball, playing varsity for two years. Dennis has also been a representative to Student Council for three years, and he was a 1985 representative to Boys State. Dennis will never leave EHS, because he has left his cheery smile and friendly wave in the hearts of everyone who has ever needed them. Chosen by the faculty, the outstanding boy and outstanding girl are well-rounded students. They are active in both academics and extracurricular activities. The outstanding boy and girl are the students that represent all aspects of Elko High School. Nicole Blohm has been a leader in everything she has undertaken. Nicole’s shimmering blonde hair and smiling face have graced almost every ac- tivity at Elko High School. We've seen her at games and assemblies for four years as a cheer-and songleader. She has participated in drama, and in Student Council, where she served as the student body vice president. As a fourth year French student she was president of the French Club, and in her spare time she has run three years of track. She was a 1985 representative to Girl's State, a candidate for homecoming queen, and has participated in the Junior Miss Pageant. Nicole has also led the way for her fellow students by being the 1985-86 Century III Scholar, Editor of the Powwow, and co-business manager of the Pohob. Nicole's inspiration for all of the students as EHS will long be remembered. Sean, If you have wings- You can fly, Pegaus brings Heartsong nigh . . . Textbooks, pencils, pens and such, homework, tests, and grades, all of these things we leave behind; so soon the memory fades. But next year we will all be back to see these things once more. We’ll keep the memories close at hand but not too far from mind, remember 1986 and the tracks we left behind. Jeana Brilhante BAND TAKES GOVERNOR’S TROPHY WHERE’D THEY TAKE IT? Ken Payne, chemistry student, remarked, Science is important for high school students because it gives them an advantage and proper preparation for college level classes.” Debbie Shane, 4th year science student, said, I think my favorite year was Biology II, when we got to cut up those cats and sharks.” EHS offers quite a few areas of science, ranging from general science and practical science, to biology, chemis try, and physics. Each class usually completes projects for the annual Elko County Science Fair. Commenting on the Fair, Vince Juaristi, 1986 representative to the Jr. Science and Humanities Symposium in Salt Lake City, said, I think the science fair is beneficial for all students because it gives them a chance to develop a personal project and pursue it until it is completed.” Many students found chemistry difficult, although most enjoyed the challenge. Matt Jones found chemistry to be, more work than it was worth,” and Chris Romeo said he thought it was, beyond mental capacity.” Eleanor Tomera said, I like sciences, and I enjoy the challenge of chemistry.” Many students, like Jayme Brown and Beth Reed, found chemistry interesting.” Jayme said, I like the idea of mixing the chemicals to create new compounds.” The general favorite of students, however, seemed to be physics. Christy Butcher remarked, Physics is mostly math, and it’s easier to understand.” Andy Morris summed it all up when he said, I liked physics because it was all there. I mean chemistry is all imaginary. Well, it’s there, but it’s not ...” w H Leslie Holdren and Kathy Kendall Airs at 7:30 on K.E.L.K. Wednesdays! Student's rallied to cheer their team on to victory, and as spirit grew hotter, the victorious junior and sophomore girls decided they liked it hot in the popcorn fights at the first-ever pajama party. Foot- ball players decided they could take the heat, too, when they were treated like royalty in the float parade. It payed off later, when the heat of the Indians football team drove Incline off the field. The blazing week ended in an inferno with Syndi Kane, the 1985 Home- coming Queen, reigning over the Some Like It Hot” dance. ADVENTURE ON ICE It was a cold, bleak week in Elko, NV, but the spirit of Adventure burned brightly on the Elko High School Campus. No one minded the cold when the halls came alive with skates and snowflakes, and crepe paper abounded. And, no one could say that the spirit of winter was cold at the Adventure on Ice Assembly, where Brian Glaser was named Mr. Elko, and Scott Gilligan had the sexiest legs. An icy wind ran through the crowd on Friday night at halftime of the big game, when Andy, Todd, Steve, Tim, and Pat were introduced as our adventurous Winter Rally King Candi- dates. Andy Morris turned out to be the most Icy Adventurer, though, gliding over the Ad- venture on Ice hockey rink dance floor as 1986 Winter Rally King. 143 75 RADICAL YEARS AND RED-E 4 75 MORE! 1896: Elko County High School, the first county facility in the state, opened on Court Street at sixth. It was used until the College Avenue campus was built. Later it was used by the American Legion and Elko Homemakers Club with the 20th Century Club utilizing the old sci- ence building behind the high school building. The County Library was moved from the courthouse to the second story in 1926 where it re- mained untill the upper level burned in 1942. The building was remodeled into a one story structure and used as the county library until a new library was constructed on the southeast corner of Seventh and Court in 1974. The structure is now a courthouse annex with county of- fices. Original cost of the high school building was 7,420 dollars. It opened with 43 students. Picture taken in 1926: From left to right: Univer- sity of Nevada (Elko was the first site of the University in 1874-1885). The building then be- came the county hospital, then it was torn down; Main building; Hillcrest Hall for out-of-town students; Gymnasium, then auditorium, when the new gym (now old) was built on the Universi- ty Building site. Just as the Pohob has changed over the past 75 years, so has the staff. The sailor's top and formal suit and tie are rarely seen now. Sadly, compared with these 18 people, our staff is quite small, and this reflects a general trend in many clubs around the campus. The dedication and creativity of the staff members, however, has remained constant through the years, not only on the Pohob staff, but in all of our outstanding organizations at Elko High School. 149 Dawn Marie Morris, 1983 Homecoming Queen, pictured here with three of her princesses, Barbie Wetzel, Lori Satterth- waite, and Dawn Neu, (not pictured is Debi Blohm). Jerry Williams, Electronics teacher remembers . . . Graduating in 1963 he commented that school was more serious. Nobody talked in class except the teacher. Whis- pering was permitted until you were caught. The principal was Edwin Jensen and he operated the school on a demerit point system. You started out with 12 merits. If you were caught skipping you lost 8 points and it was automatic suspension which lost you all 12 points. The only way to make them up was sitting in detention. All extra-curricular activities were just that—extra. They were all done either before or after school. If there was to be an assembly it was only for about 15 minutes and done at the very last period of the day. Jerry Williams humorously recalls when Mrs. Trontel came to Elko High and met Mr. Trontel. Needless to say they’ve been together since! 152 Ms. Schwartz runs the computer program now in its second year.
