POHOB 1985 Compiled and Edited by THE STUDENTS OF ELKO HIGH SCHOOL 987 College Avenue Elko, Nevada .. . POHOB is a word taken from the language of the Shoshone Indian. It means sagebrush. In Nevada, the sagebrush is the greatest distinctive feature of our vegetation . . . Since we live in this land of sagebrush and Indians, we consider this a fitting title. 1984-85 POHOB STAFF EDITOR Candy Wilber ASSISTANT EDITOR COPY EDITOR Debbie Shane LAYOUT EDITOR Angela Wann ASSISTANT LAYOUT EDITORS Ken Payne Rhonda Bailey BUSINESS MANAGER Anita Palacio ASSISTANT BUSINESS MANAGER Nicole Blohm LAYOUT ADVISORS Keith Aikenhead Betty Fobes BUSINESS ADVISOR Vickie Manning PHOTOGRAPHERS Pete Lesbo Tracey Lattin Gun Karlsson David Madson 2 Hugh Rossolo Individuality is encouraged through education. A person must learn the facts, and gain an awareness of self-expression and confidence in order to form his or her own opinion and take logical action ' Dedication Focus on the Individual ... Who wants to be an 'individual' any- ways? Everyone knows an individual is just a weirdo who refuses to be normal and associate with the rest of humanity. Well, individuality is a bit more compli- cated than that. In the first place, we're all individuals to some extent-whether we want to be or not. In the second place, antisocial or 'non-conformist' behavior isn't necessarily individualism. We chose 'Focus on the Individual' for the theme of our yearbook because we feel that real individualism is an admirable quality. Simply put, real individualism is this: You be what you want to be, not what your friends want you to be, or your par- ents, or any one else. Because he demonstates and encour- ages real individualism, we have chosen to dedicate this year's Pohob to Hugh Ros- solo. Mr. Rossolo teaches American Govern- ment, Anthropology Contemporary So- cial Problems, Consumers Education, and General Math. He is also the advisor for the Student Council and the Drama Coach. Mr. Rossolo went to college at Washing- ton State University in Pullman, Washing- ton, where he was the President of his Fra- ternity. He is interested in theatre, he plays the trumpet in the Community Orchestra, and he enjoys playing golf and bridge. He also loves to travel. An individual, he sayes, is someone who can and will take the responsibility for his or her own actions. 3 DONUT RUN!!! From the academic to the extra-curricular, you have brought credit to yourselves, the school and community. It is only through each student's individual desire, dedication, and effort that Elko High School can continue to excel. I applaud you, the students of Elko High, for a job well done. 71 CUSTODIANS L to R Javier Ascasibar Eugenio Romero Jose M. Celaya Roy E. The purpose of the National Honor Society for Secondary Schools is to cre- ate an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of America's Secondary Schools. These four qualities of genuine scholarship, noble charac- ter, worthy leadership, and distin- guished service, are the virtues most fundamental in life and most useful in society. When we all left our home countries and suddenly sat on a plane on our way to Elko -1 don't think many of us realized how much this year would mean for us. Elko High School is a great school and there are so many people, teachers, and friends that we got to know, and they have done a lot for us here. There would be a long list to name them all. All the fun times and memories will take a big place in our hearts and suitcases when we soon will leave Elko and return home . We will always remember the football basketball games and the dances, going to Burger King for lunch, cowboys, peanutbutter, detention, casinos, passes, parties, and Powder Puff, etc ... etc ... Angela Wann-I'd change attendance policy, senior trip policy. I'd let seniors out of school May 1 and I'd give myself the power to drink on campus. Jon Westlund-lf I were principal for a day I would do away with stupid rules. I would demand a senior trip. I would let school out for a day. Candy Wilbur-lf I were principal for a day, I would make yearbook preparation a class. Even though people don't believe it, there is a lot of work that goes into making a yearbook and there's not enough people who have time to help. Erin Williamson-Let the Seniors out of school on Friday. Let them snack in class. Dianna Wright-I would let everyone roam the halls. Have parties in everyone of their classes and I would even join in with them. 143 OUTSTANDING GIRLS Candace Wilber 144 OUTSTANDING BOYS 145 SENIOR HALL OF FAME WITTIEST MOST ATHLETIC Boy-Mike Geyer Girl-Danielle Kail MOST OUTGOING MOST TALENTED Boy-Danny Burton Girl-Candy Wilber Boy-Steve Boyce Girl-Cara Paoli Boy-Roger Wallock Girl-Darla Lipparelli MOST GULLABLE MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Boy-Roger Wallock Girl-Anita Palacio Boy-Chris Thompson Girl-Nancy Scott c L A S S 0 F 1 9 8 5 MICHELLE ACHURRA School activities: girl's basketball, 1-4; band, 1-4; track, 1,4; student coun- cil 1,2,3; honor band,3,4 Plans for future: I plan to attend college for 6 years and get a masters degree in science. I had a wonderful time with our POHOB staff. With the exception of Nola Conroy, everyone was new. They all showed enthusiasm and willingness to work. And, work they did! Many did not expect that much work, but faced with many problems and often time confusion, they came out on top. When looking through this yearbook, I hope everyone will remember the good times and forget the bad. Since the yearbook is almost finished, I would like thank a few people, for without their help, the POHOB wouldn't be done. Mr. Aikenhead, I am so glad you took over the yearbook. You gave me the chance to create and be free in my editing. You trusted us and you let the POHOB be OUR yearbook. Mrs. Fobes, I thank you too for helping us. You took some of the boring jobs, like proof-reading, without complaining. You encouraged us too! And, thank-you for pushing us and forcing us to work when we didn't want to, especially those weeks before our big deadline. Mrs. Manning, thanks for all your help with ads. I know that Anita also appreciated your advice. Anita Palacio, you probably already know how I feel about your help and friendship. Remember the promise we made in eighth grade? Aren't you glad we broke it? I am! Nicole Blohm, thank-you for the last minute help when we were doing ads. I owe you one, I know next year, you'll do an excellent job with ads. Debbie Shane, I couldn't have had a better assistant editor to work with. You're optimism and bright smile cheered up a lot of people on the yearbook staff. I also loved you're graffiti ! Remember, always look forward to something new and challenging. Good luck next year! Angela Wann, I have so many things to thank you for. It takes a lot to come to a new school and become active. I'm grateful you chose to help with the yearbook. And, thank-you for putting it first above all other activities. Ken Payne and Rhonda Bailey, you did a great job this year. Stick with the yearbook, your time will come to shine in the spotlight! Nola Conroy, you've been on the yearbook staff longer than anyone, including me. Thank-you for helping me teach the others. There is so much to learn, and we never do stop learning. Also, thanks for writing the theme and dedication. Mr. Wynne, thank-you for helping us with our homecoming skit and thank-you for the advice and information. Miss Schwartz, thank-you for allowing Michele Wilber to print the senior biographies, and I'm sorry I disrupted your class. Colette Kump, thanks for deciding to help us. The cheerleader pages, band, Pep-E and Candid pages look great. I hope you stay with the yearbook next year. I would like to give a special thanks to Vicki Rossolo. She provided a way to get Hugh Rossolo's picture and gave us all the information we needed to write the dedication. Her help is sincerely appreciated. While talking to her, she EMPHASISED that Hugh Rossolo loves teaching high school more than anything else. He puts in extra hours supporting students and postive feedback inspires him. Mr. Rossolo, I would like you to know that the students of Elko High School care a lot about YOU and that YOU inspire so many of us. Thank-you.
