The 'Excellence in Education award presented by the United States Department of Education certainly must be a highlight for the students and school. The students, administrators, and staff will continue to work to maintain the high standards which we have all come to expect and you as students and alumni have helped create. As the seniors go on to pursue their dreams and goals, take this one thought with you: Only those who risk going too far can possibly find how far they can go. Sincerely. Bert Elliott. Because of these meetings. EHS's Indian Pride was always HIGH! The problems brought up before the Student Council were first discussed by the council and then voted on by the members of student council. Every decision made was for the benefits of the entire student body. 79 s©OE q L - R: Wes Steele, Annette Paoli, Kathy Schwandt. Jesus Silva. These four qualities of genuine scholarship, noble character worthy leadership, and distinguished service are the virtues most fundamental in life and most useful in society. 80 § L - R: Karen Wright. The team brought home many trophies throughout the season including a few sweepstakes trophies. Fund raisers took a large portion of time. Many hours also went into practicing speeches and debates, almost all of them at noon and before and after school. But all the practice paid off as the team experienced one of its most successful years. 104 CI ESpiAAS Bottom row L - R: Nola Conroy. Mike Drinkwater. Stacey Stewart. Wynn Loughney. Saul Rainey. Beth Reed, Shelly Wiscombe, David Barstow. Delos Jones 109 m POW wow The Voice of ELKO HIGH SCHOOL Journalism Students Editorial By Meghan Miller problem not solved yet For more than a decade dismal reports about the public education system have made most Americans aware of problems existing and the fact that something should be done to solve them. The shortcomings of the schools have been documented by lower Scholastic Aptitude Test Scores, the high school dropout rate, and the shying away of students from the harder courses such as ohvsics and calculus. Everyone seems to have a cure for our ailing educational system: longer school days, longer school years, better teachers, higher pay for teachers, old-fashioned homework, no-frill curricula, more required courses, and tougher graduation requirements. However, not one of these ideas or plans will ever really have a chan- ce to be tried if the American public is led to believe that all is well at school once again. A recent issue of Time magazine came out with an article that leads the reader to believe that excellence in American public schools has been recaptured. This article cites a few very limited examples of where educational ex- cellence is prevailing and then attempts use these findings as general example for the whole nation. It was just last year that demand for higher educational standards prompted action by school districts around the nation. lr one short year it is possible that some small steps have been taken to regain lost ground in American education, but the problems have, by no means, been completely solved. Nobody knows if the solutions that are presently being tried will have any significant long term effects on our educational system. If America’s attitude toward education once again becomes complacent, the pressure will be taken off of the educators and the students, the quest for academic excellence will stagnate, any small gains that have been made in education will be lost, and American academic standards could regress. Although we in Elko County really aren’t touched by some of the more serious problems that plague many schools around the 110 nation, we don’t think America can afford a step backward in education. The team beat Manogue 14-10 in the last second on passes from Chris Carter to Dennis Tafoya. This victory gave Elko a 5-0 Divisional record and the Championship. In the State Playoffs Elko played Boulder City in the first round and beat them 16-8 with Craig Armuth scoring the winning touchdown in the closing minutes on a fumble recovery . . picking it up and racing into the end zone . . . much excitement followed. The final game was played in several inches of snow and we lost to Truckee 34-0. The Junior Varsity won all eight games giving up only one touchdown the whole season. Dedicated, talented, fun. are just a few words that describe the 1983 Volleyball team. Perhaps a phrase currently being bantered about would be more appropriate. These girls showed all season that they are “Made of the Right Stuff.’’ When it appeared that they were out of the final tournament, their pride and determination brought them from a 2-14 deficit to a 12-14 chance to win before finally succumbing 12-15 to the 1983 State Champions, Pahrump. It has been a privilege and pleasure to coach these fine athletes, some for several seasons. The association with this fine team will provide many pleasant memories. Linda Headly Jennings. Few. however, will ever know of the things that went on inside. The things that really mattered. No one will ever know of the struggles, the hard work, the tears of sadness and joy. or the laughter and bonds of friendship. These are locked inside of each of us to be released only to those who can appreciate them. The entire experience has been a teacher in itself, as the game of basketball is so much like life. First and foremost, the students of Elko High School must be applauded for their tremendous efforts in achieving standards which were set for them. Our dedicated faculty and staff at Elko High School that have gone above and beyond the normal call of duty to give our students an opportunity to excel. The tremendous positive support of our community. Without their backing and encouragement, some of the things we have accomplished in the past five years would not have been possible. To the Board of Trustees and central office administration who encouraged and allowed the high school administration the opportunity to set the course for positive things to happen. The whole state of Nevada looks to Elko High School as a leader of excellence in education. As we progress through the years, we will do all that we can to live up to our new standards. This award and recognition has charged Elko High School with a tremendous responsi- bility. We have Started a tradition of excellence in all things we do at Elko High School. We will attampt to maintain this new tradition and improve upon it. Every student should take this as a personal challenge to achieve and “reach beyond your capabilities. Bert A.
