You have completed a significant milestone in your life, truly meaningful, if you have given something besides your time. It is also my wish that Elko High School has helped prepare you to reach your future goals. Go forward from here remembering that we shall always be proud of your accomplishments, and hope that we can continue to build a reputation for your alma mater that you can reflect on with pride. Mr. Royal Orser, Principal Mr. Bert Elliott Vice-Principal The new administration, under the direction of Mr. Orser and Mr. Elliott, set goals at the beginning of the year to improve spirit, morale, competitiveness, and school image. They wanted the students to be proud of Elko High School and the years they spent there. The administration and faculty provided the leadership and direction needed to reach the goals. By accentuating the positive and recognizing the accomplishments of students a foundation was built to make Elko High School the best. Looking back at the 1978-79 school year, spirit, morale, and competitiveness were elevated to new levels and the school image is one that everyone can look back on with pride. Katherine Blossom Counselor Darwin Hunt Counselor counselors Clint Larson Counselor Behind the main study hall were the counselor's offices. The counselors were Mrs. Trontel, Mrs. Blossom, Mr. Hunt, and Mr. Larson. Mrs. Blossom counseled the Indian students, and Mr. Hunt worked with the graduating juniors and seniors. The members of this vital staff were involved in the guidance and future career selections made by many students. 61 The Art Department was one of the most popular departments on campus. The whir of the pottery wheel, the crackle of the blow torch used by jewelry students, and the ever-present hum of students conversing on ideas and art projects were just a few of the impressions left by the artroom. Mr. Swendseid could be seen painting posters for tournaments and making background for local plays, as well as encouraging students on their many projects. Students tried out for every play and learned what it was like to put on a professional production. To be a member of Drama Club, participation in one play is required. The fall and early spring plays were presented with many new faces to be seen up on the stage. The spring musical was presented in the new Convention Center. To become a Thespian, Drama Club members must earn a certain number of points. Monday was Hat Day, Tuesday was Inside-Out Day, Wednesday was Graffiti Day, Thursday was Dress- Up Day, and Friday was Maroon and White Day. Thursday afternoon members of the FFA collected wood for the huge bonfire. That night a large crowd consisting of the football team, band, cheerleaders, students, faculty, alumni, and people from the community attended the roaring blaze that ignited both our spirit and pride. Our assembly, Friday afternoon, was a spirited event culminating the efforts of clubs and organizations in a super display of enthusiasm, laughter and excitement. The band, cheerleaders, song-leaders, and Pep E led all of us with bubbly eagerness. The Queen candidates' presentation, the Car Parade, and getting out of school early ended our afternoon. With tears of happiness, our Homecoming Queen Linda Mori was presented and crowned at the Pre-Game activities. After accepting the silver tiarra and flowers presented to her by the co-captains of the football team, Queen Linda and her court, Claudia, Judy, Liesa, and D'ette, reigned over the Elko-Manogue football game. Saturday night, with “Indian Lightning decorations and Xanadu playing our favorite tunes we danced and enjoyed everyone's company at the Homecoming Dance.
