Each step will strengthen your character and the principles of life of which you believe. Stand up for what you believe and believe what you support. Learn to live with people for what they are, and always look for the good in everyone and everything. To accomplish these objectives, you must know yourself. Graduation is a great day — a milestone, but always a new beginning. Best wishes, Class of 1978. During these years, we have received a most valuable education and have made many lasting friends. We can recall both the good and the bad times at EHS, the thoughts we've had, the things we've done, and our class slogan, Ain't Life Great With '78? . Memories contain a cherished part of our lives. It is now time to move on to new adventures and bigger-and-better things. Because of the background EHS has given us, it is possible to reach each and every one of our goals. As we leave the halls of EHS, we will also be leaving behind a very special part of our lives. It has been a long climb to the top, but we have reached the final peak, and it is time to move on. 16 Senior Class Officers Denise Adkins (Scorpio) Forensics-3; VICA-3,4 Jim Algerio (Scorpio) Sharon Algerio (Capricorn) FFA-2,3,4; Choraliers-2,3,4; Band-1 Noreen Arnold (Capricorn) Spanish Club-1,2,3; Chess Club- 3; Frosh Pres.; Sec.-2; Cheerleader-1; Journalism-2,3, Co-editor; Yearbook-1; Chorus- 1,4; Volleyball-1,2,3; Karate Club-1; Tennis Club-2 Ouida Ashe (Gemini) FHA-2,3,4, Officer; GAA-1; Track-1,3,4; Pep E-4; Block E- 1,3; Pohob Business StafF-3; Pohob Photography Staff-4; Pohob Photography Manager-4; Harvest Ball Queen-4 Mary Baer (Pisces) FBLA-3,4, Vice-Pres.-3; Pohob Business Staff-3,4; Student Council-3; Pep Club-4 Lane Barnes (Sagittarius) VICA-2 Mitch Barone (Virgo) Varmae Bogue (Virgo) Frosh Basketball-1; J.V. Just walk beside me, and be my friend. Bonnie Bunning — Hey Sure! Susan Burns— Time-out! Kathy Byrnes— A friend is one who knows you as you are, understands where you've been, accepts who you've become, and still invites you to grow. Tammy Chiles— Shut-up. Michelle Crapo— This is the beginning of a new day. God has given me this day to use as I will. I can waste it or grow in its light and be of service to others. But what I do with this day is important because I have exchanged a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes, today will be gone forever. I hope I will not regret the price I paid for it. Donna Domingo— Though the years and the miles may divide out paths, And time goes marching by, The tears and the smiles we gave each other will last, Along with the effort to try to let each other know in some small way, What a friendship is worth, There's nothing considered more precious, (At least not here on earth) And when you need a helping hand and perhaps a shoulder too, Don't hesitate my friend, to let me know. I'll do the same for you. Jeannie Hall— Hold fast to dreams, For if dreams die, Life is a broken winged bird That can not fly. Shelly Jones— Oh pepper! Janie Konakis— Look to this day! For it is life, the very life of life . . . For yesterday is already a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision; But today, well lived, makes every yesterday A dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope. —From the Sanskrit Lori Lund— Pass the Buck. Mary Sargeant— Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true —L. J. Cardinal Suenens Tracie Mariam- All endeavors call for ability to tramp the last mile, shape the last plan, endure the last hour's toil. Ginger Mintun— Live a Little. Andrea Moiola— You-betcha!! Rita Mori— I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday, and I love today. —William Allen White Sue Noble— If you think you are beaten, you are; If you think you dare not, you don't. If you like to win but think you can't, It's almost a cinch you won't. If you think you'll lose, you're lost, For out in the world we find Success begins with a fellow's will; It's all in the state of mind. If you think you are outclassed you are; You've got to think high to rise. You've got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster man; But soon or late the man who wins, Is the man who thinks ne can. —Walter D. Wintle Pam Phillips— May all your dreams come true. Marguitta Samper— Pues, Tough Tacos, Adios Gatos. Periann Scott— Friendship is not ours to misuse—it is ours to cherish for- ever and ever. Class of 1978 remember your friends long into forever. Debbie Shaw— No great thing is created suddenly. Yolanda Silva— Boom ba Boom ba BOOM! Shake it BABY! Madeline Waid— Keep your face toward the sun, and all shadows will fall behind you. Sandra Yraguen— What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. —William Morrow May we never have to say good-bye, but just, until we meet again. No love, no friendship can ever cross our path without affecting us in some way forever. Paula Cuthbertson— Only in silence the word Only in dark the light Only in dying life: Bright the hawk's flight on the empty sky 30 Senior Quotes The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; It is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him. —Ralph Waldo Emerson Juniors 31 Juniors Gaze At What Is Yet To Come L. to R.: Mr. Swendseid-Advisor, Dave Pratt-Vice-President, Roger Vogeler-Boys' Representative, Judy Jevas-Girls' Repre- sentative, Mary Manilla-Secretary. NOT PICTURED: Lee Gregory-President, Rusty Braithwaite-Treasurer We, the Juniors of 1978, have had a fantastic year!! This year passed quickly, but gave us new meaning and depth to our lives. It has been one we are sure to remember, full of laughter, excitement, and good times. All our personal experiences of trial and error, defeat and success, are just steps to our future lives. We all worked together using our dreams, hopes, and skills to accomplish our goals. We thank our sponsor, Mr. Swedseid, for helping to make this year a good one. We are grateful to all our teachers. We have learned much this year, but yet have so much more to learn. There will never be a Junior class quite the same as ours. We contributed and received just as much from EHS and are looking forward to coming back as the Senior class of 1979. 32 Junior Class Officers Val Aguirre Debbie Ainsworth Nancy Aldrich Vickie Alvarez Darla Ames Dan Antonioli Lawrence Baer Susan Bailey Julie Baker Laurie Ballew Bruce Barnum Dan Basanez Gerald Beck Brad Berry Bessie Betancourt Philip Biegler Kerry Bird Liesa Blanchard Maureen Blossom Gail Boner Pamela Bottari Rusty Braithwaite Marvin Bryant Roberta Call Juniors 33 Tracy Canas Leslie Carone Calvin Carpenter Carl CdeBaca Cheri Chapin Kris Chiles Darla Christean Brent Churchfield Steve Ciszewski Cathy Cobb Mark Cole Lisa Corbett Brenda Corgan Joe DePolo Sonya Diaz Suzanne Duval Kathy Eardley Pat Edwards 34 Juniors Susan Ellenberger Rod Elser Marcy Embry Jennifer Evans Sheila Fieselman Marjorie Fobes Tim Fogle Joe Gallegos Elaine Gandolfo Teresita Garcia Chet Geyer Cindi Gilliland Lee Gregory Sheri Groves Rachel Harris Cara Harrison Joe Hassett Tricia Haynes Claudia Hernandez Vic Herrera Juniors 35 Gary Hillam LeAnn Hines Kim Hodgson Jennifer Hooper Todd Hubbard Cheri Hunt Judy Jevas Karla Kaiser Susan Kennedy D'Ette King Doyal Kirby Jed Knight Nick Konakis Kaye Larson Kim Laughlin Denise Leahy Sheri Lear Debbie Ledbetter Marty Logsden Rosie Lupercio 36 Juniors Scott McBeth Pat McBride Corine McCrory Joe McDaniel Kathy McMullen Mary Manilla Ed Marfisi Tina Martinez Fernando Mendive Sherri Miller Bill Monson Verle Moon Linda Mori Jack Moyle Walter Musolf Myrna Negron Carol Nicholson Lonnie Nutting Donna Owens Russell Palmer Juniors 37 t Greg Parks Gayla Parry Mark Paul Tamre Payne Curt Perry Wade Pitman Alfred Plank Karen Plunkett Nancy Porter Elizabeth Portwood Dave Pratt Teresa Puccinelli Dina Richardson Patricia Robinson Maria Romero Rhonda Rosenbaum Kathy Salaz Marcus Samper Shawn Sanford John Schneider 38 Juniors Tod Scott Randall Sharp Faith Smith Jeff Smith Melvin Smith Chris Stuart Debbie Sutherland Chris Swendseid Lucy Tomera Tim UpDegrafF Natalie Vallejo Brad Vaughan Roger Vogeler Teri Wammack Theresa Weiss Shelly Wilde Kathy Williams Woody Wilson Pattie Woolverton Ed Zontek Juniors 39 Early Graduates Adrienne Aguirre Sally Barrett Angie Billings Shane Carlsen Pam Carone Carol Couchum Lorri Jones Kevin McMahon Susan May Sally Morfin Wilma Negron Charlotte Parker 40 Early Graduates THAT'S WHAT I CALL A FRIEND One whose grip is a little tighter, One whose smile is a little brighter, One whose deeds are a little whiter, That's what I call a friend. One who'll lend as quick as he'll borrow, One who's the same today and tomorrow, One who will share your joy—and sorrow, That's what I call a friend. One whose thoughts are a little leaner, One whose mind is a little keener, One who avoids those things that are meaner, That's what I call a friend. One when you're gone will miss you sadly, One who'll welcome you back again gladly, One who, though angered, will not speak madly, That's what I call a friend. One who's been fine when life seemed rotten, One whose ideals you have not forgotten, One who has given you more than he's gotten, That's what I call a friend. —John Burroughs Sophomores 41 Sophomores Anticipate New Heights L. to R.: Susan Bellinger-Secretary, Cindy Hartung-Girls' Representative, Jeff Draper-President, Mr. Rossolo-Advisor. Where you begin as a boy and finish ay a man, feel the triumph of winning, 'face the disappointment of losing. Stand tall. . . you deserve to be proud. Sports 95 A player on a team of ours should be a man you see, it matters not your measured height five one or six foot three. It's what's inside that counts the most of character and pride, of self determination and the courage that's inside. An INDIAN is a leader of himself and others too, he's the guy with second effort when the others say they're through. An INDIAN of the maroon and white is a guy who sets the pace. He's a guy that's so determined you can see it on his face. Winning comes in second, it's best effort through the fight that qualifies the winner who's played with heart and might. An INDIAN is a guy who's trained, who has given of his best, who's got a heart that beats with pride deep within his chest. An honest guy who plays the rules, who's committed not to cheat. On and off the battlefield that's the guy who's tough to beat. An INDIAN is a score of things, he's effort, brain, and brawn. An INDIAN we'll remember well when the average guy is gone honesty, integrity and self determination, desire to give it all he's got, a positive sensation. A mind that's quick, a body strong and a heart that wouldn't cheat make real INDIANS of Elko High, the kind that can't be beat. So guy if you can qualify, if you want it quite that much lift up your head, your.heart, and soul and victory you will touch. You might not win all the games you play, but you'll never really lose. You might be stiff and sore some days, but your pride you'll never bruise. Be everything an INDIAN is, work hard until you are. The theme of this year's Homecoming was “Star Warriors. Throughout the week, individual classes were busy working on posters, skits, and floats. Each day of the week was designated as a certain dress-up day. Tuesday began the festivities with a tribute to Elvis Presley and the '50's. Students could be seen around the campus wearing oxfords, bobby sox, wool skirts, sweaters, rolled up jeans, and sunglasses. Wednesday, depicting our Homecoming theme, was called “Star Wars day. Students were seen with glitter and stars in their hair and paint on their faces. A few were spotted in full costume. Wednesday night was the hilarious skit dress rehearsal. Bonfire Thursday began as students arrived at school wearing a variety of shirts and hats to carry out T-Shirt and Hat day. This day brought one of the best responses from the student body. On Thursday night, everyone huddled together at the Bonfire to boost school spirit and get “fired up for Friday's big game. Friday, which was designated as maroon and white day, began as students entered the poster-filled halls wearing the school colors and spirit buttons. Football players' lockers were decorated and filled to the brim with goodies. In the afternoon, the band marched through the halls playing the school song on the way to the Homecoming assembly. The assembly, which was attended by the students, alumni, and parents, was termed a great success. During the assembly, the winners of the poster, skit, overall spirit, and float competitions were announced. The Seniors won the poster skit, and overall spirit competition, and the Juniors won the float competition. Immediately after the assembly, the car parade wound its way through the downtown streets. The evening began as Moi Lew was crowned Homecoming Queen. The crowning was followed by the football game, in which a powerful Yerington team defeated Elko by a score of 15-44. The result of the game did not dampen Homecoming Spirit, and Saturday morning began the decorating of the gym for the Homecoming Dance.
