THE 1977 POHOB ELKO HIGH SCHOOL ELKO, NEVADA today is ours DEBBIE PHILLIPS . . . EDITOR TRACIE mARIANI . . . ASST. EDITOR TAmmi SUSTACHA . . . BUSINESS fTlANAGER ANDREA mOIOLA . . . ASST. BUSINESS fTlANAGER mR. ROBERT SmiTH . . . ADVISOR new beginning 1 a new day is dawning and it’s all ours SCHOOL SONG: ON YE INDIANS, ON YE INDIANS, FIGHT FOR ELKO HIGH GALLENT MEN IN MAROON AND WHITE ALL BOUND TO DO OR DIE- ON YE INDIANS, ON YE INDIANS, CROWN OUR SCHOOL WITH FAME FIGHT FOR OLD-ELKO HIGH WE'LL WIN THIS GAME new beginning 3 world seemed wrong, Throughout its din I heard the song, You can begin again. The beginning of a new day is the beginning of new hope, new courage, new opportunity. We can't live through every day reacting perfectly to circumstances that arise, but if yesterday you were not the person you would like to be, remember that today is a chance to begin again. UNITY The production of this POHOB is solely for you, the students of Elko High School. Thank you's need to be relayed to so many people. Thank you, Mr. Williams, for the artwork on the cover; Mr. Swendseid for drawing the unique division pages; Bob Cavender, for taking time to sketch the school; Julie Reynolds, for the beautiful poem; Mr. Clark, for taking all posed pictures; the POHOB Photography Staff, for developing all candid shots; Tammi, for doing a super job on the advertisements and for sticking by me when the road got rough; to Mr. Smith for all the advice; and to you, the students, for being excellent subjects. Freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, we are all beginning a new, adventurous life into the future. We are not ending our life, but beginning anew. The road will be different, rough at times, but we can and will make the best of life. The whole world is at our fingertips, but it is up to each and everyone of us to reach out and take hold. Take one day at a time and live it to the fullest, but always look toward a brighter future. Always remember: Today is the first day of the rest of your life. May all your dreams come true. Debbie Phillips—Editor editor 4 administration 5 PRINCIPAL’S OIESSAGE Graduation from high school is one of the great events in the life of an individual. Yet, while it marks the achievement of a successful program of training and education, it is not an end; but in a sense a beginning. It is a milestone in your progress toward better citizenship and a better life. Your generation inherits a world far from perfect and with uncounted pitfalls, yet a world alive with the energy of progress and change with opportunities on every hand. These opportunities are accompanied by responsibilities. It is your challenge to preserve the liberties that citizens of this country have been blessed with for 200 years and which have made possible the education you have received and which provided opportunities that are yours—opportunities limited only by your ability, integrity, and ambition. We started the year by welcoming the Freshman to EHS. Seniors showed the underclassmen how skits and assemblies are run. The first Friday night was highlighted with a football game and then the Senior-Frosh Dance with music provided by Sundance . As weeks passed, the entire school saw the Seniors establish various money- making activities. During the football season we held a Chili Feed, Cake Raffle, and tried to increase the team's spirit by having a Pizza Dinner for the varsity players. Nancy Hull, our Secretary, composed an original Senior calendar for every month of the school year, telling of Senior's birthdays and activities. Debbie Phillips constructed a Senior banner to be displayed at all school activities. As time passed and Homecoming drew near, we participated in the celebrations. We showed our spirit by dressing up for T- Shirt, 50's, Mourning, Hat, and Maroon White Day. Mourning Day produced a special Senior funeral procession for the Fallon Greenwaves. We added to the Homecoming activities by winning the best float, spirit at the assembly, and added posters and skit to support the team. At the game, Andrea Marfisi honored us by being our Homecoming Queen. She reigned over the Homecoming Dance, beautifully decorated by the Student Council, with music by Fire and Ice. As the year progressed, we added many more money-making activities. We had a Gas Raffle and Painting Raffle, donated by Mrs. Roseberry, during the basketball season. We brightened the study hall with various Baked Food and Doughnut Sales. During the Elko Invitational Christmas Basketball Tournament, we sponsored a very successful Tourney Dance with music by PAX. After the Hawthorne basketball game, we sponsored a Disco Dance featuring Wolfman Basanez and a special guest appearance by KISS, alias Kevin Morley, Randy Hadlock, Allen Tatomer, and Mark Granados. As the year progressed, we planned the Junior-Senior Prom for May 14, making it the best prom ever in the history of the school. We left on our Senior trip to Disneyland where we participated in Grad Nite '77. For an added sidetrip, we took a boat cruise to Catalina Island. As the school year came to a close, we attended our Senior Party. On June 3, 1977, Graduation forced us into the realization of the end of our school life at EHS. A dance and party followed the ceremony. But when we return, we shall still be able to hear voices in the halls saying, THANK HEAVEN FOR '77. seniors 18 TONY AGUIRRE V. Baseball-1,2,4; V.
