ELKO HIGH SCHOOL POHOB 1974 2 3 I must thank Mr. Smith for his patience and time, and Tammy, Dee Dee and Tracy for their diligence and hard work. Through their efforts these papered memories lie before you. But, what is a memory? — Something to retain and something to blend with the future. It is a glint of joy, a flash of pain, myriads of fading faces and times already fled. The school year 1973-74 is now languishing, but will continue through these pages and in all of our recollections of it. This Pohob is dedicated to each singular face within it. “Let today embrace the past with remembrance and the future with longing. . . ” Gibran Gretchen Holbert Editor 4 The mind is restless, turbulent, strong and unyielding, as difficult to subdue as the wind. —Bhagavad Gita Seniors Reach New Heights LEFT to RIGHT: Matt Sargeant—Boys’ Rep., Del Bieroth—President, Mike Xavier—Vice-Pres., Gayle Puccinelli—Girls’ Rep., Jack Skivington—Sec.-Treas., Mr. Lake—Snr. We’ve each had our own personal tastes of glory and defeat, of good times and conflicts, all indelibly marked by friendships. Now, as seniors we step out from these halls to be what we may be, building on all of our memories. I have a hard time making my mind and when I get all together I seem to go all to pieces. TODAY - Is The Tomorrow You Worried About Yesterday 109 110 The Frequently Forgotten in LEA VING Some of us were leaving little towns and pretty places, (Though we thought them ugly at the time) . . . That is not to say that we were special, set apart from those who stay. We were movers but of our own selves only, not unlike the cabbage grown for city market, there came a time to be detached and trucked away. And we went willingly. Some of us went away just to get away, some of us left because horizons never stop. Some of us thought we’d walk a little taller if we walked away. Some of us chased shadows, dreams, ambitions. Most of all there was some living to do . . . Mr. Robert Kerth, Principal Principal's Message As the school year draws to a close, the members of the Class of 1974 will be departing from the role of a high school student. We are overcome with joy at the thought of this graduation; however, we are concerned for their livelihood as they enter a complex-challenging society filled with greed and distrust. Regardless of whether your choice is to continue in higher education, the armed forces, or the world of work, I know that you are prepared because of high school. I wish you the Best of Success. BURNS FUNERAL HOME AND MEMORIAL GARDENS How wc enjoyed ourselves (Or at least one way) • 1974 The energy crisis and gas shortage that we fretted over This was the year Agnew resigned his position while Euwell Gibbons ate pine cones on T.V. The year the Mid-East fumed as we turned our thermostats down to 68. The year “The Waltons” captured our hearts and Jonathon Livingston Seagull, our souls. Bette Midler and “Happy Days” were the newest rage and impeachment was on everyone’s breath. It was a year of baggy pants and platform soles, of “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “The Exorcist”. The year of the Watergate controversy and the energy crisis. Food prices went up and clothes came off of the streakers. 1974 was a year of turmoil, of change, and of a shift towards nostalgia. It was a year when we tried to conserve, preserve and observe. But most of all, it was a year out of our lives. 168 There is a right time for everything: A time to be born, a time to die; A time to plant, a time to harvest; A time to kill; a time to heal; A time to destroy, a time to rebuild; A time to cry, a time to laugh; A time to grieve, a time to dance; A time for scattering stones, a time for gathering stones; A time to hug, a time not to hug; A time to find, a time to lose; A time for keeping, a time for throwing away; A time to tear, a time to repair; A time to be quiet, a time to speak up; A time for loving, a time for hating; A time for war, a time for peace. — Ecclesiastes 3:1-9 And now it is time to say good-bye. My deepest gratitude to everyone who helped me. Tammy Robison Business Manager 169
