Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1968 volume:

Today, many adults say, Look at those kids, how they dress and act. What's wrong with them? Did we fail? We say to you, No, you did not fail us. But we must find ourselves, discover who we are and what P I f A I A I we want out of life. We must learn to be ourselves, t I I I 1 1 not just carbon copies of you or our friends, and we have to try to prepare ourselves for this topsy-turvy world. Because of the importance of this trait in our society today, the 1968 POHOB is dedicated to the individual. 3 Where but in the art room could you find yourself among so many examples of individuality? What could be more interesting than browsing and looking? Often among the artistic works of other people we find ourselves, our real character. Thank you Van, Gina, and Jackie for your delightful business pages, and thank you, Jane, for all the pages you gladly did when I was in a spot. But, most of all, thank you, Mrs. Amestoy, for all the help and endless patience you gave me. The 1968 Pohob Staff hopes you enjoy this yearbook, and that in some small way it will help each of you discover your true self. 4 ADMINISTRATION ROBERT ZANDER, Supt. WENDELL VINE Asst. Supt. MITZI LANI Secretary The students of Elko High School are to be commended for the high standards they have maintained this school year. Your year has given you a pretaste of responsibility in work and of freedom to deal with duties in your own way. May the maturity you have gained through your acceptance of responsibility carry you forward so that you meet with continued success in whatever endeavors you choose to follow. Icobef t J. In retrospect, each of you should take inven- tory of your past school year and decide if you have met the challenge passed by your teachers at the beginning of the school year. I hope and feel certain you can answer in the affirmative. Good luck to the graduates and returning stu- dents . THE OFFICE GUIDES US ROBERT KERTH Vice Principal ANITA MERRICK Secretary 7 MRS. LUNDGREN, Sponsor We have finally advanced from the rank of Freshmen and we have proved our new status with both our studies and school activities. The sophomores, under the skillful guidance of our sponsor, Mr. Lundgren, were very well led by our class officers. We thank all of them. All four of the Junior Varsity cheerleaders were elected from our class. Many of our sophomore boys were very active in sports, and several were on the varsity teams. Many members of our class were in clubs and school presentations. We topped off our great year by sponsoring a terrific Soph Hop. An now, as we leave our second year of high school, we are eagerly anticipating our years as upperclassmen at E. H. S. 36 1ST ROW: D. Albarran, D. Bogue, D. Braithwaite, M. Blackstock, M. Casella, P. BOBBIE WUNDERLICH, President MIKE HACHQUET, Boy Representative DAVID CUNNINGHAM, Vice President DIANE GRIFFITH, Girl Representative JULIE SMITH, Secy.-Treasurer MR. WEIGHTER SPONSOR In September, a small band of inexperienced and trem- bling freshmen entered the halls of Elko High School for the first time. But, amazingly, a week later, we had become accustomed to new rooms, new teachers, and new friends. It was as if we had always belonged to Elko High School. We were not only glad, but looked forward to this new ad- venture in our lives. The year was started well for us when we placed second in the magazine drive. This gave us a good number of spirit points. Our freshman class officers have represented us well this year. We would like to thank them, for they have made us proud. As our first year of high school has ended, as all good things do, we think of the coming years with the hope that our next three will be as successful and as happy as this first year has been. 42 1ST ROW:D. In memory of Kitty Griswold, members of Chap- ter A, P.E.O. have established a Memorial Fund from which the annual Kitty Griswold Girl Award will be made. It is hoped that the Award will be significant in the honors it bestows on an Elko High School Senior Girl. Each year the Recipient will receive an engraved gold Kitty Griswold Girl Charm on which will appear her name and the year; she will have her name inscribed on the Kitty Griswold Award Plaque at Elko High School and will receive fifty dollars. This award is to recognize and encourage the development of those qualities in a girl that lead to the gracious life in a woman as personified by Kitty Griswold. This includes an alert mind which strives to de- velop growth in knowledge and in culture . . . A gentle heart that shows kindness and courtesy toward those with whom she associates . . . A delight in humor which reflects the glow of humanity while remembering consideration for the feelings of others . . . A respect for health in body and physical stand- ards of clean living . A willingness to serve by using those abilities and talents with which she has been endowed. The evidence of these qualities is the basis for selection as the Kitty Griswold Girl. With the finan- cial award goes the loving concern of members of P.E.O. as a source of strength and help toward de- veloping these qualities to their full potential. 89 HOMECOMING ’67 Look out! Hi, this is Martie Rowen and Jim Willison, here once again for War Whoops of E.H.S___ Every Wednesday evening the student body of Elko High tuned in for the radio pro- gram. Under the direction of Mr. Russell Jensen, Martie and Jim presented current news of E. H. S., sports information, interesting interviews and, of course, the latest in gossip and popular music. This program is one of the best ways that the community of Elko can keep up with the growing activities and enthusiasm of Elko High School. Martie and Jim had a great time doing the program this year and they urge the future Seniors to continue in the tradition. 98 Congratulations, Martie and Jim! The poor Freshmen with too many books! 160 161 Caught in the act, Jackie! 162 This page is traditionally a page for thank yous so we will get on with this first--thank you assistant business manager Jackie Hood, thank you hard-working business staff, thank you to our advertisers, thank you original editor Lynne Hall, and thank you to our wonderful sponsor Mrs. Amestoy. Then it is traditional for the business managers to make some philosophical comment about life or something important like that, but we have discussed it and this year's business managers have nothing to say; especially about life. We feel that the thousands of cliches have been out worn to the extreme. For this reason we shall proceed to characterize 1968 with the following words, hoping that in ten or even twenty years--if you pick up your Pohob these words will bring back a memory: mini-skirt, maxiskirt, flower power, groovy , The Monkees, the Apollo Pro- gram, hippy, Viet Nam, L.B.J., the Olympics, elections, Thomas Dodd, mod”, and de Gaulle. And remember our class re- union in 78! Good Luck 'til then and we'll see you there! Business Managers 163 This is the way Elko High looked as school began. Soon, two large holes appeared and we all realized our long ago wish for more school space was coming true. With the new additions helping to alleviate the problem of large junior high classes, learning and teaching will, hopefully, be made easier. We of the Pohob staff are excited and happy about the improved situation and only hope that students will take advantage of the better learning conditions which will soon be in existence. 164
