Text from Pages 1 - 171 of the 1967 volume:

AMERICA, AMERICA THE POHOB ELKO HIGH SCHOOL Cydnee McMullen, Editor Valerie Fox, Business Manager Mrs. Pauline Amestoy, Advisor I God Shed His Grace On Thee. . . The United States is the world's most powerful nation. We are leaders in trade, living standards, agriculture, education, scientific discovery, and industry. We offer liberty and independence to all of our people; we attempt to beam the living light of democracy to all corners of the globe. But today we must fight for the very existence of our country against those powers which intend to destroy and enslave us. As the youth of America, the burden of leadership will soon be lashed to our backs. Our actions will determine the destiny of generations of future American citizens; we must make the crucial choice between independence and slavery. We cannot ignore the crises which face us in the world today: Viet Nam; Berkley, California; Harlem, New York; Austin, Texas. We must struggle against Communism, subversion from within, racial unrest, and crime; or free America will sink under their weight, and a new, even more terrible plight will settle on this continent: the loss of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. 2 Dedication WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1967, dedicate ourselves to America, to the responsibilities of leadership that we must assume. We will, to the best of our abilities, work to keep America strong, free, and watchful over sister nations. We will remember that WE are America’s hope, and that by our actions AMERICA is judged. Strengthened by patriotism, courage, and love, we will forge a trail through the jungles of hate until we reach the horizon of world peace. From The Editor’s Desk A year has passed, vanishing into the dusty annuals of yesterday. Though we may feel sharp pangs of sorrow at its passing, we realize that its bright happy days can never again be lived. Then we remember: there is always tomorrow. The future, be it bright or dim, awaits our touch. To you, my fellow Seniors, I want to express the great happiness your friendship and companionship has given me. I wish each of you continuing success and the total fulfillment of each of your goals. Underclassmen, I wish you shining years ahead. Live these years in sincerity, and you will never regret your high school years. To my loyal henchmen (Mrs. Amestoy, Val, Van, Gina, and Lynne) I can only say two weak, inexpressive words: Thank you. I don't think you'll ever realize how much I have relied on you, or how your support has carried me through the year's major and minor crises. E.H.S. , I'll miss you: your hurrying halls; your noisy bells; your reams of home- work; your Study Hall at noon; your willing faculty; your football, basketball, and base- ball games; your track meets; your tiny dark Pohob room; your bellerin’ , yet friendly principal; your formal dances; your busy Anita; your club meetings; your trips to State; your debate tourneys; your loves; your hates .... your memories. Wherever I go, whatever I do, I'll never forget. With all my heart, UTL 4 ADMINISTRA TION WENDELL VINE ROBERT ZANDER, Supt. Asst. Supt. It has been a happy experience to be indentified with Elko High School and watch it grow during the past years. The success of a school depends on its products and its products consist of students trained to lead happy, profi- cient, useful, and unselfish lives. A citizen is of value to society only as long as he has the ability to better society, because he is a member of it. And lastly, abundant good feeling and high hopes go forth with the graduates that all the fine work of the school may bear the finest fruit and that all students may realize their highest dreams. SCHOOL BOARD: R. J. Toothman; Hugh Collett; Matt Smith; D. V. Harper; R. E. Bums, Jr.; John Blecka; Arthur Glaser. 6 ROBERT KERTH Vice Principal Congratulations to the students of Elko High School for a fine year. You are to be commended for the strides you have made towards the fulfill- ment of your desired goals. To the graduating Seniors, we wish continued success in their chosen pursuits. The community, faculty, and administration are proud of the Class of 1967. 7 ANITA MERRICK Secretary MR. GILBERT AYARBE Mathematics B.S., U. of Utah MRS. LOUISE BASS Commercial B. We won first place for our Homecoming float that year. Our Soph Hop was the best ever, and Ebb Tide, our Junior Prom, filled each of us with the pride of ac- complishment. Our Senior Ball will never be forgotten. Now our last year of high school is gone, and with it, the last traces of childhood. We are adults now, and we must push forward into adulthood. The years we have spent at E.H.S. have been rewarding for some of us. For others, these years may have been wasted. But most of us will look back at Elko High from the future and see that the days spent on its campus have shaped and molded our lives. Good-bye, Elko High! SMITH, Sponsor The year '66-'67 will be remembered by the class of '68 as an exciting and rewarding year. Our mighty class was led by our competent class officers. We got off to a good start this year by placing first in the Magazine Drive. We showed super school spirit by attending dances and games. Although our class is small, we have always been active in athletics, scholastic achievement, music, and all kinds of organizations. Our Junior Prom was a great success, and will long be remembered. It was well worth all the hard work that we put into it. We want to thank Mr. Smith, our long-suffering class sponsor, for all the time, ideas, and help he has given us this year to make it the best yet. Our Senior year is just around the corner now, and we plan to put deter- mination and hard work into the leading of Elko High. We want to make our last year our very best. 26 THERESA BRUNO SHERLYN BURNS NINA CAUDILL JUDY CHAPIN DENNIS CHASE RICH COMBS JANET COPENHAVER CHRIS CUTHBERTSON MICHELE ARREGUI BRAD BAIR MICKEY BAKER JANICE BALDWIN JEAN BARKDULL BOB BARTON BILL BEAR CHRIS BILBAO LARSON BILL BOB BOSTIC KEITH BROSE SHIRLEY BRUMMELL 27 GERRI DOLLARHIDE KEVIN DRESSI ROSS EARDLEY TOM EARNIST CYNTHIA ELLISON CONNIE ELSBERRY JOHN ERICKSON MARGIE FARLEY CLEVE FRIEDMAN JOANNE FRENCH STEPHANIE FONTAINE STEVE HAGER LYNNE HALL RORY HAMMER PAULA HANKINS WARREN HARDIE VAN HARRIMAN ROY HERR CAROLYN HERRERA 28 JOE HESS JOHN GOICOECHEA LARRY GOICOECHEA VERA GONZALES KENNY GREEN KERRY GUISTI VIRGINIA JAUREGUI DAVID JAYNES JAY JAYO DELYNN HIGLEY NANCY HOLLEY TIM HOLT BONNIE HOSKINS NEIL HOWARD SCOTT HOWELL TOM GALLAGHER KENNY GARCIA KERRY GARCIA FARRELL GARDNER PACHECO GIBSON ROSEANN GLENNON 29 SHARON JIRAK BARBARA KANE DIANA KANE NANCY LANDA ARTHUR LITRELL JESUS LOPATEGUI RANDY MCCARTY GLEN MCKNIGHT JO ANN MACARI MIKE MARTIN DALE MAWSON LINDA MILLER BRUCE MITHCELL ROBYN MITCHELL LYLE MONTGOMERY CHERYL MUNGER CHARLENE MUSOLF NANCY NICHOLS ARTHUR NUGENT 30 VIKKI NUTTING LINDA OLDHAM MARGARET O'MEARA IDELLA PAPPAS CINDY PARKER DOMINGO PEREZ KATHY PERRY SUSAN PLUNKETT DIANE POWELL PATTY RAND BRUCE READ PAULETTE REDANT SUSIE ROMERO MARTIE ROWEN JEAN RYAN ARTHUR SAM JOE SCHLAGER MIKE SENA LYNN SESTENOVICH GARY SHERILL LINDA SHORT 31 MIKE SINCLAIR DAVE SLAGOWSKI DAVID SPIKES JACKIE STENOVICH MYRA STENOVICH CONNIE STRICKLAND CONNIE SWEETWOOD SANDRA TAELOUR KARLENE TOW CHERYL TRAPPETT HEIDIE TURNER LINDA URRIOLA TOM WALTHER RUSS WEAVER JOHN WELLS GREG WENNER MICKEY WILBUR NEIL WILCOX MARGO WILDE JIM WILLISON 32 LEROY WILSON BILL WINES MARY ANN ZUBIETA 33 'Oh, Thad! We had never before experienced the thrill of graduating from the realm of childhood into the unique world of Teen- dom. All in all, we adjusted to this change remarkably well. We all agree that it was fun, even during initiation. We started our first year out right by electing the right Freshman class officers. They represented our class well in Student Council. The beginning of the year was highlighted by the annual Senior-Frosh Dance. We won third place in the '66 Maga- zine Drive, and next year we plan to work even harder. Our Homecoming float and skit occupied much of our time during October. The hours we spent on them paid off, for each was a success. This year has been exciting and successful for the Class of '70. We are sorry to see it end, but we are looking to the future in anticipation of other wonderful years. 42 1ST ROW: D. Abarron, D. Bogue, R. Aguirre, G. Bidwell, L. Aranguena, M. Blackstock, D. Pictured on the opposite page you will see four of the hardest working students at Elko High: our Varsity Cheerleaders, Sally, Marva, Dee, and Becky. Their job is a difficult one. School spirit depends on them; they must keep pride in E. H. S. at a high level. They also must act as our school's representatives when they are on the road with the team. Their job is tiring mentally as well as physically, and takes much of their spare time. We would like to say a sincere thank you to these girls. Their antics on football green and basketball floor have offered fun and entertainment. They have added color and excitement and spirit to Elko's games. We want them to know that we are proud of them. E. H. S. can be proud of its Junior Varsity and Frosh cheerleaders, too!! A new addition to school officers in 1966-1967 was our Mascot, the Elko Indian. The first stu- dent to hold this office was Van Harriman. Van's cheers and acrobatics added new fun to E.H.S. games and assemblies. In fact, this new idea worked so well that it will be continued in future years. Thank you, Van, for your contribution to school spirit! 85 SEPTEMBER: 9 - Winnemucca Away 16 - Jerome Home 23 - Buhl Home 30 - Carson Away OCTOBER: 6 - National Assembly 7 - Hawthorne Away 15 - Manogue Home 22 - Homecoming Fallon 28 - National Assembly 29 - Bell Game NOVEMBER: 4 - Reno Away 9 - National Assembly 12 - Harvest Ball DECEMBER: 2 - Grantsville Away School Play 9 - National Assembly 9-10 - Carson Away 16-17 - Winnemucca Away 21-22 - Elko Christmas Tournament 23 - Vacation JANUARY: 6 - Wooster Home 14 - Winnemucca Home 16 - National Assembly 21 - Dugway Home GAA Volleyball 27 - White Pine Away 28 - Gymnastic Meet FEBRUARY: 3-4 - Fallon Home 10 - Sparks Away 11 - Reno Away 17 - White Pine Home 24 - Virgin Valley Home 25 - Winnemucca Away MARCH: 2-4 - Zone at Las Vegas 10-11 - State at Reno 18 - Music Festival 23 - Senior Ball 86 APRIL: 3 - National Assembly 7-8 - Musical MAY: 12-13 - School Play 20 - Junior Prom 26 - National Assembly JUNE: 2 - Commencement ACTIVITIES State ANN WARREN ELKO STEVE BASTIEN ELKO NEVADA BOYS STATf J State 88 We Got The Bell! Elko journeyed to White Pine for the traditional Battle of the Bell. Spirit was up for the game, and there was a large Elko crowd present. Elko wanted this game badly because a victory would make Elko the only team to keep the bell three consecutive years. With the bell ringing loudly, Elko kicked off to White Pine, and the battle was on. White Pine made only a short run back of the kick and were stopped by Elko's defense. Then after only three plays, White Pine fumbled, and Elko's Jack Zunino recovered and ran the ball across for the first touchdown of the game. Elko missed the conversion but still led, 6 to 0. Soon afterwards, White Pine scored on a good drive, and added the point-after- touchdown. This made the score 6 to 7. In just a few minutes after that, White Pine scored again. This made the score Elko 6, White Pine 14, and Elko fans were down- hearted. But the Elko team came back to make a second touchdown and added a conversion this time to make the score 13 to 14, White Pine. In the second half, White Pine threatened a few times, but it was all Elko's game. Twice, once on a long run, and again on a pass play, Elko scored. Elko fans were hysterical, and Ely wasn't yelling as loudly as at the first of the game. The score was 26 to 14 when the final gunshot went off, and the Bell was Elko's once more. Pandemonium broke loose on Elko's side of the field. The team got both Coach Trontel and Coach Hassett on their shoulders and carried them to the bus, with the Bell right behind them. Elko's desire for that Bell made the all-important difference, as their determination to win was obvious to all their supporters. — Bryan Holley, Pow-wow Reporter Homecoming ’66 The Class of '69 Does It Again—Another Prizewinner! As a result, Elko High saw some of the best (and most unusual) artwork in its history. The Committee was responsible for gym decorations, hall posters, and bus posters for away games. For football season, they built a flaming E and displayed it during night games. A large part of the school spirit at E. H. S. this year can be attributed to the efforts of these hard workers. They have done their jobs remarkably well and deserve our gratitude and commendation. It can never be relived, but I hope that it is a treasure chest of memories that you will cherish for a lifetime. To Mrs. Amestoy I say thank you with the greatest sincerity. I couldn't have gotten along without her friendly advice and tireless efforts. Cyd is a hard-worker and she has spent many a long hour toiling over her work of art. Van and Gina have always been right there when there was work to be done. They are an extremely ca- pable pair. I wish them the best of luck next year in their task of Business Managers. Tom Walther has added to our pages with his ingenious artistic talent. I would like to especially thank him for the cartoon he reproduced from Linus on Life” by Charles Shultz. And to all of you I say thank you”, for without you, this yearbook wouldn't be possible. May I leave you with just one thought. Don't depend on others to show you the way. Blaze your own trail. Be the one who leads the way to tomorrow and not merely a follower. Individuals will be the leaders of the future and the conformists will be left behind. But mostly, To thine own self be true, as Shakespeare so brilliantly stated. Or, as Lucy puts it, Don't be a leaf, be a tree. 159
