The POHOB ■(£. . ‘jfi if ■' i' ' • v ' ■ As Time Goes By. With the passage of years, you may look back upon this school year as the time when the dark- ness of ignorance suddenly became enlightened with the gleam of knowledge. Your memories may be relived in the pages of this yearbook; however, as time goes by only you can keep your own year- book of knowledge. Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time. By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow THE EDITOR 2 In Dedication to. . . Our Principal Whose ready smile and hello greet us as we pass through the halls. Whose unflinching faith has never been swerved even by our misdeeds. Whose helpful advice is there for the asking. Whose understanding and concern has been as a father's during our challenging high school days. MR. EDWIN JENSEN On Ye Indians, On Ye Indians, Fight for Elko High! Gallant men in Maroon and White all bound to do or Superintendent7s Message You, as students, are acutely aware of the con- stant reiteration of those in positions of leader- ship that our country is facing a very grave crisis in these days of violently opposing ideologies and that America’s very existence as a nation of free men is threatened. It is hoped that each of you in Elko High School will keep constantly before you the awareness of this great challenge of our time and direct your unstinting effort to promote the greatness that is democracy in a world that needs it now more than ever before. Board of Education BURNELL LARSON Superintendent of Schools LEFT TO RIGHT: Arthur Glaser, Norman Traher, Sam McMullen, Dick Toothman, D. V. Harper, Wilda Grock, John G. Blecka. Principal's Message The school year 1961-1962 has been a good year. The student body of Elko High School has been exceptional. Crowded con- ditions in the school buildings have been less noticeable because of fine cooperation by faculty and students. The students have seemed more serious in doing good work in the various subject fields as induced by concern of grades received for their work in these courses and seriousness of work in the library and study hall. Each of you in Elko High School is to be complimented for your part in making this a good school year. May the year 1962- 1963 be even better. The heart of our school. . .. As we pause and think back on our last four years, we remember all the fun we enjoyed. To make sure we started our senior year out right, we elected Roger Anderson as our President; Bill Hessel as Vice-President; Lina Bilbao as Secretary; Charlene Shobe, Treasurer; Cherie Nelson, Girl Representative; and Deed Scott, Boy Representative, ip Our officers worked diligently under the supervision of our class sponsors, Mr. Waller and Mr. Miller. We are very proud of those senior students who held important positions in our school. Stan Burns was elected Student Body President, Cheryl Bastien was the Student Body Secretary, and Marie Ellison was the Student Body Treasurer. Lina Bilbao was editor of the Pohob and Mary Harris worked along with her as business manager of the Pohob. Vicki Staley was editor of the PowWow,” our school newspaper. Last year our Junior Prom Tara will remind us of the work we put into it and of the pleasures and memories we received from it. Our Senior Ball Silver Bells will k also be remembered as a big success. During our four years of high school, our class was also well represented in scholastic ability, athletics, organizations, and in the music department. Even though some of us will be sad when we leave Elko High School and watch the doors close behind us, we can look back with a deep sense of satisfaction and accomp- lishment. As juniors under the skillful guidance of Mrs. Mocho and Mr. Laibly, we were assured a lively year when we elected such competent class officers as Eric Young, President; Harvey Barnes, Vice President; Karen Collett, Secretary; Kerry Woodward, Treasurer; and Rita Mitchell and Jim Wenner, Representatives. The highlight of our school year, of course, was the Junior Prom, which, due to the patience of our sponsors and a lot of hard work, will always be remembered as one of the most fabulous, thrilling events of our high school years. We were honored in having other livewires” from the Junior class in prominent school positions, such as Bruce Van Zee, Student Body Vice President; Karen Collett and Lisa Puccinelli, Assistant Editor and Assistant Business Manager of the POHOB, respec- tively. Competently acting as Varsity cheerleaders were three very lively Junior girls; Jean Jayo, Chrystl Paoletti, and Head Cheerleader, Karen Collett. Athletically, scholas- tically, and socially the Junior class was also well represented. Next year we will be the neat seniors, but this year has been a thrilling one. Don't give me that look! SOPHOMORE STORE As our second successful year at Elko High closes, we look back on all of our achievements of the past year. We started this year off by electing very responsible class officers. They were Jack Ames, President; Bernie McClendon, Vice-President; Fred Worline, Secretary; Denise McLain, Treasurer; Don Unruh and Cherie Fairclough, Boy and Girl Repre- sentatives . Two of the Junior Varsity cheerleaders came from our class, Bunny Hunter and Cherie Fairclough. Many of the sophomore boys were active in sports and several of them earned letters this year. Our scholastic rating was also very high this year. In order to really finish our great year in style, we sponsored a great Soph Hop. As we now bring to a close our second year at Elko High, we look forward with much enthusiasm and hope for making our next two years just as outstanding. Class of ’65 Wayne Van Zee . This passage by Colton seems so appropriate to our high school years. They have passed so quickly, but many rewarding memories are left behind. This past year has been a very successful and rewarding one. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Fox began the year by taking class pictures. The Curtis Magazine Subscription drive followed with the sophomores coming in first and the fresh- men running a very close second. Lina Bilbao, Editor, worked constantly throughout the year and this book is the result. Very few people realize the long hours and the hard work that our editor gave to this E. H. S. annual. Lina’s originality is evident through- out the pages of this Pohob. Karen Collett, Assistant Editor, also deserves a thank-you. Karen's still panting from running to classes gathering students to have their pictures taken. Lisa Puccinelli, a hundred thanks to you. Your cheery, Do you want me to get more ads or help with the pages? surely sounded wonderful to me. The best of luck to you, Lisa, as Business Manager next year. The gratitude felt for Miss Grise could not possibly be expressed in a mere thank-you. Her assistance was invaluable. Without her constantly reminding us this yearbook would not be. We have Mr. Jensen, Beth Hachquet and the faculty to thank for their tolerance in letting us disturbe their classes. We were forever running into the office asking Beth to put an announcement in the bulletin or writing a receipt. The dedication of this book to Mr. Jensen could not have been given to a more deserving person. Mr. Jensen's understanding and the many times he stuck-up for our student body is evident when students speak of him as both a friend and a principal. This yearbook is the highlight of the student body's school year. Although our hopes and dreams exist in different horizons, the seniors leave many fond memories in the halls of E. H. S. In the years to come these mem- ories will again become a reality as we turn the pages of this yearbook. The music and romance of dances, the suspense of football and basketball games, the anticipation in school plays, and the fun and pride felt at gradua- tion will again be relived. Look not mournfully to the past-it comes not back; wisely improve the present-it is thine, go forth to meet the shadowy future without fear and with a manly heart. Longfellow Mary Harris Business Manager 131 The beautiful Ruby Mountains
