lgnhnh Domestlc Arts HE Home Economxcs course of three years offers for the Freshmen a study of tefctlles and plaln sewmg It takes up the four textlle fibers cotton flax sllk and wool from the standpomt of hlstory produc tlon manufacture the Hmshed product and 1ts relatlon to the household The study of tex tlles also takes up the use of substltutes adul terants cost and selectmg of materlals and th testmg of textxle fabrlcs The glrls are en couraged to collect samples of materlal and classlfy them so that they may recognlze dlfferent materlals and learn thelr value Sewlng IS no longer taught as an xsolated subject and the r latlon of sewlng to tex tlles IS emphaslzecl from the economlc as well as the practlcal slde ln the second year foods and cookery are studled Emphasls IS placed upon uses of foods 1n the body and upon food composltlons Sklll IS developed through the actual processes of cooking and obser vatlon The work IS planned so that lt leads up to the cookmg and servmg of meals whlch takes place m the sprmg ln thxs class the glrls galn a knowledge of nutrxtxon however thls IS taken up more thorouvhly ln the unlor dletetlcs class In thlS class the girls study dxetetlcs for twenty four weeks and advanced sewlng the last twelve The dletetlcs course lncludes the study of the calorie as a standard for measurlng the energy of food and the amount of food a person should eat accordmg to hls welght act1v1ty age and occupatlon The students also learn to an dlets wlth the proper amount of calorles fat carbohydrate prote1n mlneral elements and vltamlne Dlets for chlldren are studlecl and tue stu dents also learn to plan dlets for people of abnormal condltlons I thls class as ln the cooklng class the work IS 1n form of experlments and problems Economy ln buvlng food IS also taught The class thls year has made some very good posters for an exhlbltlon they are plannmg on thls sprmg lqhey haxe planned thelr exhlbltlon so that p ople may learn many useful thlngs The advanced sewlng IS a clothmg project where each lndxvldual plans and works out her own needs The problem IS the planmng and makmg of a glrl s spring wardrobe 22 5 I . .
