1911 IHIL POHOB answered and no word came to the lonely man llVlng ln the lxttle cottage He had heard from one of the scnool boys tnat Charles was very angry at not havlng I'C4f?lVLCl the money and ln a fit of anger had gone West to work ln the mmes All this had happened wlthm a year s tlme Mr Smlth was now thlnkmg of the precedlng year when hxs son had been home and of the happy Chrxstmas they had spent H1 h art relentej and he was now sorry that he had not sent the money and no trouble would have happened 'Vh old man had an unuttcrable longing In hls heart for hls loved son At length he arose and started slowly for the door Lookmg up he saw a man standmg m the door It was Charles who had be n a sllent spectator He had come home He had opcred the door urnotlced and had watched hls father guessmg hls thoughts Lnarl s had struca a rlch mme and returned home rolllng m wealth The father clasped hls son by the hand and threw hls arm around hmm unable to say a word Father and son sat by the flre tall mg over old times untll very late Thls was mdeed a happy Chrlstmas een rom the rznorpctls 1910 oznt E have now passed through the first four months of school the most dlflicult perrod of the school year and have accom pllshed considerable We have all made mlstakes and un doubtedly wxll make others m the future but our mxstakes must not welgh heavily against us We can and w1ll complete a success 11 1 -. THB POHOB January days He thought of hrs Wlfe and baby boy HlSVKlfC had dled when th bay wa only two y ars old After the mother s death the baby turned to hls father for the tender lov and care vxllch his mother had always gnen hlm The father also turned to hxs baby for confort and IU thls way father and son grew to love each other more ten lerly day by day The boy looked upon his father as an example and trled to emulate lnm ln every way while Mr bmlth s heart seemed bound up IU hls son and he tlltd to be worthy of the boy who thought so mach of hmm A few years afterward when baby Charles was old enough to go to school many a nlght Mr Smlth would slt by hxs Slde helpmg hum promunc a hard word or wlth a problem wh1ch the boy could not work It wa a plea ant slght to see both the old gray halred man an:l sma'l curly headed bov bent over the book After study was over Mr Smlth would tell Charles of hls mother who was aiwavs cheerful and happy Charles could but dlmly remember er So a few years passed and Charles fimshed publlc school and declded to go to tollege The man could never forget ttat day when the boy left and after watchmng rum untll he was out of sxght he turned and looked upon his home whlch now seemed lonely for never before had Charles been away W1 1 e at a'leg Curle a J latel wxth wlld cornpamons and before 'ong led a reckless hfe He fen m debt and sent home for money whreh was promptly sent to hxm Charle lovsuer dld not seem able to b eak away from hxs old hablts and was contmually wrltmg for money whxch was always sent Flnally Mr Smnth wrote to hls son tellmg hlm he would send no more money for hlm to spend foollshly He also told how lonely lt was wlthout hxm and how he wxshed hls toy could come home Atter rfadmg thls letter Charles declded to do better and make himself a credit to h1s father For a whxle he lmproved butlt was all ln vam H fell mto g eater debt than ever and wrote home once more for money Mr Sfmth would not send lt ter he knew It would do hls son no good and he wrote telllng Charles and advxsxng hlm to come home and work to pay hxs debt The letter was never 6 l ' -1 -1 f , E .
