CANOE mth 1ts smgle occupan , a syx arthy savage, gl1des througn r1ppl1ng water, a tall, grateful beech whlspers age old secrets to a glant oak, the smsh of a deadly arroyx drsturbs the s1gh1ng h mlocks and the quxverlng a p ns A sharp cry when the fatal fhnt reaches ns v1ct1m, and then srlence agam broken only by the yxh1spers of the trees and an occaslonal bird call Thls IS only a brr of the s ory h1dden IU the word Monongahela whrch has m lf the musfc the romance and the tragedy of the ages the muslc of the ram and the w1nd, the romance of the red man as he roamed carefree and fearless over hxs boundless acres, and the tragedy of h1s destructlon at the hands of the whnte man If the one tune mhabrtant of what we, today call the Monongahela Natlonal Forest were to return, he would End that h1s former huntlng grounds were once more commg 1nto therr own that happy people were agam enjoymg th1s great out of doors, that no longer were the ruthless axe and the merclless saw wreak1ng thelr destruct1on For today these acres are bemg guarded and preserved as somethlng very precrous Those of us who lxve rn the heart of the Monongahela Nat1onal Forest pomt w1th prlde to what IS bemg accompllshed by our Forest SCFVICC The IIDITICUSIIY of their task rather appalls us when we reallze that the Forest covers an area ID whlch Greenbrler Nlcholas, Webster Pocahontas, Pendle ton Randolph Tucker Preston and Grant countles 1n West V1rg1n1a and Hxghland and Bath countxes m X 1rg1n1a are rncluded These lands became a natlonal forest as a result of a protest of Nature agalnst wanton destructvon of ner trees In 1V1arch 1907 one hundred mllhon dollars worth of damage was done bv a flood 1n the basms of the Allegheny and the Monongahela r1vers yyhrch cony erge at Prttsburg to form the Ohxo Engxneers employed to 1nvest1gate the reason for the Hood gave the cuttlng ayx av and the burn'ng of the forests w1th1n the watersheds of these rn ers as one of the pr1nc1pal causes As a result of th1s lnvestrgatxon the Weeks Layy passed by Congress on March 1 1911 made the Monon gahela Natlonal Forest possrble The or1g1nal acqu1s1t1on of land about fifteen thousand acres was made 1n 1914 Smce then o her acqu1s1t1ons have been made LIUII1 today the Forest Service covers an area of 1 714,000 acres Ours not only to enjoy b If to preserve . . . . , 1 7 w - Y 7 D c S9 .
