After five games, 3 starters were out permanently while several were injured and could not play the upcoming game. But the Elks came through with a 10-1 winning record for the season (including the game with Lavaca) and found themselves in the State playoffs where they were one of two teams to score against Danville, the Class A State winner in the playoffs. Scott Smith received two very exceptional honors: first team All State and Outstanding Back in the Conference. So many exciting things happened at EHS this year. We realize we only hit the high spots, But we hope as you turn the pages you are greeted with fond memories. 82 Dedication It is our pleasure to dedicate this year’s annual to a man who is more than a teacher. He is a leader, a guide, a friend, a confidant, an artist, a fisherman. Ross Armstrong takes a personal interest in the sixth grade students under his charge. He visits each at home, and he touches their hearts not just their brains. Mr. Armstrong frequently delights in taking mini-vacations while he spins some fishing yarns. He taps the creativity of his students by drawing out each ones artistic talents. And, his students learn more about living than most usually do. Ross Armstrong has been a teacher at Elkins for the past 16 years. He has dedicated his entire being to teaching young people, and for his lasting lessons, we are forever grateful.
