Elks break national, district, school records The 1974 football team undoubtedly broke more records than any other team since football began in Elkins in 1966. The first record broken was surely for the smallest team. The squad was made up of an even dozen, and from this they received their nickname—the dirty dozen. The team also broke the school's record for winning the most games. The team ended in a 6-3-1 season, but the con- ference ratings were even better. 5-1-1. The team placed se- cond in the district for the first time in the history of football. John Bunch broke a national record while playing with the Elks. In the Winslow game John rushed for a total of 608 yards, breaking the high school rushing record by 88 yards. But the best record that was broken in the 1974 season was not broken on the football field. A winning season gave the team and the student body record amount of school spirit.
