Queen Dena Counts wins honor at The homecoming: day was highlighted when Dena Counts was elected queen of the homecoming festivities, but this was just one aspect of a perfect homecoming at Elkins High School. Even the rains that had made the football field a mud puddle stopped for the September 27 activities. The spirit of the day began early as the students arrived to see the decorations on the building. And everyone was dressed in purple, purple, purple. The morning pep rally had more enthusiasm and noise than the gym could almost stand. Purple dressed cheerleaders, football players, students, and even teachers cheered and urged the team to victory. Prizes were given to extra spirited people. David King and Rick Ledbetter won the prize for the best decorated car—although the honored automobile was a truck. Tammy Hendrix won the prize for sporting the most ribbons. The seventh grade was the most purple of a very purple group. And not surprizingly. the freshmen were the loudest. As befitting the seniors, they won the best poster award. The pregame homecoming ceremony announced the student’s choice for their homecoming queen—Dena Counts. And as the queen and candidates sat in attendance, the dirty dozen fought a 28-14 defeat over Decatur. A good dance and band. Voice, ended the homecoming day. A school full of enthusiastic students, beautiful queen candidates, an exciting game, and a good dance what a great homecoming!!
