The Elk Year book of Elkins High School Elkins, Arkansas 1970-71, 1971-72 Dedication Administration Faculty '71 Seniors '12 Seniors Upperclassmen Elementary Sports Who's Who Organizations Activities Ads As the days go by, memories return, ever fonder. Remembrance enlarges events and days. Laugh and be merry, remember the days at Elkins, Laugh and be proud to belong to the halls of Elkins, Laugh for the time is brief, a thread, the length of a span. We hope as you turn the pages of this annual that you will fondly remember and as the poet said, you too may say years later, Back- ward, turn backward, O Time, in your flight, make me a child again just for tonight. Dedication Because he taught us to love Arkansas History and to be proud to be from the hills of Arkansas, and for his personal interest in every student and for his words of wisdom the annual staff proudly dedicates this annual to Mr. Carl Vanlandingham. Left: Mr. Van displays his plaque given by the Beta Club, and his Sav- ings Bond given by the School Board. Right: Mr. Van at the St. Paul Reunion 1971. 2 Administration We are living in the Space Age. It is an age of motion, velocity, and the rate of change is swifter than ever before. Peo- ple have been adapting to change since the beginning of time, how- ever , we are having to learn to adapt more quickly now than at any other time in our history. The demand on people who are directly involved with the education of our young people is great. The challenge to teachers and ad- ministrators is to provide each student with the knowledge he will need to be prepared for his future life: his needs will be great and varied. It is an awe- some responsibility, and we at Elkins School assume it with sobriety. We consider it a priv- ilege to be a part of the future through our work with the younger generation. I am proud of our school and our students, and I am confident they will help to build a better future for us all. James K. The '71 team entered the season with a new coach, a new look, and a new attitude. Coached by C. C. Law, Ron Meeker, and Ton Dalton, the team set out to reverse the tide of defeat. Hie major upset came mid- way in the season with an overwhelming tie with Green Forest in an exciting homecoming game. The 6-6 tie was the first taste of success for the eleven seniors on the team. A stingy Elkins defense stiffled op- ponents keeping the opposition at a new record low. With the help of intercep- tions and a strong kicking game, field position was favorable for the Elks. A new look on offense with the famous wishbone option sparked an explosive team effort. Extra point conversions came easy for the '71 Elks. Team spirit, bolstered by a surging wave of school spirit, made the season more significant than was indicated by the score board.
