The 1966-67 season for the Elks was a building season. Their record of 19- 9 does not indicate the many games lost by the Elks by a very small margin or the many won by a determined team coming from behind in the last quarter. Beating a strong Prairie Grove team to win the County Tournament was the highlight of the season. Ronnie Shackelford, a Senior forward, won All- District honors. If this team had a motto, it would probably have been Watch Out Next Year. First row: Charles Ziehr, Bruce Battenfield, Bob Wright, Kurt Doege, Coach Cobb Second row: Lonnie Roach, Harold Smith, Tommy Neal, Verl Hency, and Burl Hattabaugh. The Elkettes of 1966-67 lived up to all the predictions made about them, as a matter of fact, they surpassed them. Returning to the starting line-up this season were the three starting for- wards of the previous season, so offensively the team would be strong. The question remained, what about the defense after losing three starting guards by way of graduation? True to form, three new guards came to the front and did an out- standing job for their team. The Elkettes won the County, West Fork Invitational, and District Tournaments and went on to State, only to lose by one point, in the last few seconds of the game. Sharing all District honors for the Elkettes were Joyce Collins (Cotton), Martha Cooper (Coop), and Janie Paschal. With a record of 25-5 (two of these games being lost in a tournament featuring the class A state Champs) this is a team which will long be remembered by Elkins fans.)
