We, the annual staff, proudly dedicate this year's annual to our librarian, Mrs. Bonnie Paschal. 2 The Superintendent’s Message This book has been dedicated to a very worthy and hardworking teacher. I would like to add my appreciation for Mrs. Paschal and her efforts in encouraging and counseling the young people in Elkins School. She has been instrumental in the production of our Annual for several years. I would also like to extend con- gratulations to the other staff members and students who have worked many hours in making this publication possible. Evidence of morale from faculty and students this year indicates one of the best years ever for E.H.S. Let us all strive to do our part to make this year one that we can look back to in future years with the fondest of mem- ories. 3 Oyyiruu-' School Faculty John Cadle, Principal Faye Smith, Secretary Bonnie Paschal, Librarian Mike Tillery, Science Martha Ritter, Jerry Trowbridge, Kathlyn Kirk, Perry Thomas, Home Economics Junior High Commercial English Grade School Faculty Beatrice Wright, First Betty Terrell, First Alice Ruth Shofner Second Carl Van Landingham, Principal Ramona Thompson, Second-Third Janis Singer, Virgie Morgan, Third Fourth Alice Springston, Fourth-Fifth Dessie Harriman, Fifth Ross Armstrong, Sixth Janice Eaton, Remedial Reading Shirley Dingledine, Teacher's Aide 5 Seniors of ’67 CLASS MOTTO We’re not afraid of tomorrow, for we have seen yesterday, and we love today.” CLASS FLOWER Orchid CLASS COLORS Silver and Orchid CLASS SONG ’’Climb Every Mountain” Mrs. Barbara Cobb, Sponsor ’’People who want by the yard, but try by the inch should be kicked by the foot. Second row: Joyce Dunaway, Paula Heskew, Martha Cooper, Janie Paschal, Susan Marley, Pam Shackleford. The Elkettes of 1966-67 lived up to all the predictions made about them, as a matter of fact, they surpassed them. Returning to the starting line-up this season were the three starting for- wards of the previous season, so offensively the team would be strong. The question remained, what about the defense after losing three starting guards by way of graduation? True to form, three new guards came to the front and did an out- standing job for their team. The Elkettes won the County, West Fork Invitational, and District Tournaments and went on to State, only to lose by one point, in the last few seconds of the game. Sharing all District honors for the Elkettes were Joyce Collins (Cotton), Martha Cooper (Coop), and Janie Paschal. With a record of 25-5 (two of these games being lost in a tournament featuring the class A state Champs) this is a team which will long be remembered by Elkins fans.) Junior Girls Team Front row: Jo Carter, Carol King, Patsy Carter, Susan Kirksey, Teresa John. Second row: Joyce Turner, Jane Smith, Patty Jones, Martha Battenfield, Mary Ellen Sweetser, Coach Cobb. The 1966-67 season for the Elks was a building season. Their record of 19- 9 does not indicate the many games lost by the Elks by a very small margin or the many won by a determined team coming from behind in the last quarter. Beating a strong Prairie Grove team to win the County Tournament was the highlight of the season. Ronnie Shackelford, a Senior forward, won All- District honors. If this team had a motto, it would probably have been Watch Out Next Year. To some teams this would be great, but we've been spoiled. We have had a few highlights this year; one in winning second in the County Tournament, and another in having two of our players, Joyce Dunaway and Charlotte Clark, placed on the All District Team. Since we lose only two of our players by graduation, and have 11 freshmen coming up from the Jr. team, things look much better for next year. While this is not a final evualation of a team's success, it does show the Junior boy shad some players with ability. The team that won the district tournament was an earlier victim of the Elkins Junior boys. Losing three Gary Hankins, Johnny Hankins, Ronnie Belote and James Barker. starters, next year’s team will have to depend on the eighth graders that carried most of the burden this year; how- ever, the Elks Sr. team may look forward to receiving a talented group of freshmen. This is true for both girls and boys. When other nights .. and other days May find us gone our separate ways We will have these moments to remember. The classroom fun, the Junior play, things we sold Will be remembered when we are old. The sophomores become juniors, The laughter, parties .... we have shared Will echo through the years. Lines written will bring back fond memories of things we might have forgotten. We hope your 1968 Annual will mean all this and more. Our pride in this book more than makes up for the time spent on it. The Annual Staff.
