We, the annual staff, respectfully dedicate this annual in memory of our beloved superintendent and friend Elbert L. Mitchell. This teacher with his understanding, his love of teaching, his love and personal interest for every child in school, gave the student body as a whole a confidence in itself, and faith in our abilities to succeed honestly in life. His unselfish life was an inspiration to all who knew him. He taught us as students that, In helping others you help yourself. Our shop, our home economics department, and our new science building stand as a monument to his memory. His deovtion to duty as he saw it is bestsaid in the words, Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. S UPERIN TEN DEN T’S MESSAGE It has been said that a man's life does not consist in the abundance of things that he owns. I am a firm believer in this idea. Our youth of today has three great decisions to make which will influence their lives forever. They are: 1. Their belief and attitude toward God. 2. Choosing their life's companion. 3. Choosing a vocation. I sincerely believe that the school environment at Elkins is very beneficial in helping the students in making wise choices in regard to these important matters. Few persons, except those on the Elk staff, realize all the work that goes into the production of our annual. Therefore, on receiving your annual amid the accom- panying joys, take time and show gratitude for a task well done. HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY MR. JERRELL TERRELL Shop, Mathematics Junior Sponsor MRS. SYPHER Co-Sponsor Sponsor SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY On May 22, 1979 the Elkins class of '59 had a reunion in Honolulu, Hawaii. This reunion was scheduled to be at 11:00 a. m. in one of the world-famous Langham Hotels owned by Patsy Langham. As I walked through the door, I glanced at the clock. It was already 11:15; I hurried to the elevator and when the door opened whom should I see but the world's champion racer (he still had his helmet on, I guesshelikes to be prepared forafast get-a-way). As we ascended toward the banquet room which was on the 112th floor, Hubert and I were hurriedly catching up on each others past when the elevator stopped and we were astounded to see Miss Beth Vaught, secretary to the U.S. , escorted by her good friend General Loy Bruce Lefordof the Army Reserves. We were all so over- joyed at seeing each other that we had reached the banquet room before we realized it. As we stepped out of the elevator into the banquet room we were greeted by a lovely hostess, none other than Carol Griffith. I had read recently where Carol had founded her own hospital, as I was so taken in by the beauty of the banquet room, I forgot to congratulate her. Just to think that this roomwas designed and decorated by Robert Stanton, another one of our classmates who had climbed to the pinnacle of success. Speaking of fame, I talked to Johnny Dockery who was a champion surf rider and got his autograph to take home to my small son who was one of his many fans. Lynville Eaton pointed out rather hesitantly that the autograph was written on one of the monogramed napkins manufactured by the Eaton and Sons' Corporation which also manufactures leis and grass skirts. Before I had time to see everyone it was announced that dinner was going to be served. While waiting to be served, my dinner partner (none other than the President of the Cotton Pickers Union, Corky Jones) and I had a very pleasant visit. We were served a delicious meal which included broiled octopus with shredded coconut on top. The meal was planned by Betty Harriman who is the dietician for the Langham Hotels. After the meal was over, we all settled back to hear an old acquaintance, Doctor Loyd Swope, speak on the cure for K. S. T. In case you didn't know, Loyd himself found the cure for this dreaded disease. After the Doctor finished speaking, we were splendidly entertained by that renowned vocalist with the golden throat, Lizzie Pollock. We spent the rest of the afternoon catching up on each other's past. Oh, I forgot there were two latecomers to the reunion; Mart Tate and Glen Ledford, it seems they had car trouble and had to walk fifteen miles. I learned later that Glen and Mart were co-owners of several garages throughout the country. I can safely say that everyone had a most enjoyable time at the reunion and I was happy to find that they had all done so well. Every member has become a celebrity in his own field. Here in the words of noted news analyst, Norman Doege - -himself a member--is the step by step account. The first to arrive is our old friend and sponsor, Gene Hogan, who is the same horse racing Gene Hogan, winner of the Kentucky Derby. Entering behind him is the famous dance team, Tom Dalton and Betty Roudabush, first to introduce the famous Congo Shake in this Country. A circle of people gather around as Betty and Tom do a few movements of their dance--such lightness! Someone in the circle remarks, Cool man cool? I turn and, yes, it is Danny Cooksey the renowned scientist. Danny's latest research is being done on the incubation of grasshopper eggs. A commotion at the door catches my attention and in walks the beautiful actress Martha Young, who has taken over the Bardot fans. Escorting her is equally famed actor and singer, Leroy Lackey. Leroy has many records to his name. His latest hit is Leroy, Leroy Lend Me Your Comb. We go into the banquet hall which has been redone since the 1996 Democratic Presidential Convention was held here. Bruce Clark, owner, persuaded the well-known artist, Marilyn Miner, to redo the famous Elks Hall. There is Norma Jones, the noted model, in her famous funnel dress that gives you that poured in look. To her right sits the noted love crooner, Richard Nickell, who later on the program sings a romantic song about true love never dying. Close by sits gracious Donna Johnson 1999's mother of the year. On the menu I found zebra meat, goose eggs and elephant ears, especially furnished by the hard-riding ranchers Leon Slaughter and Zell Goolsby. The wines I notice are from the well - known James Mason Winery. A cheer arises and I look and in the door stands Elkins' Chief of Police, Doug Williford to greet his classmates. Just then class president, Harold Pitts raps for attention. Harold made the All-American basketball team from the University of Arkansas in 1970. The program includes a talk by Major Buddy Ledford on our future in space--what space looks like and confirms the fact that the moon is made of blue cheese. Two writers are in the midst--Dian Hopper who autographed her newest western, Dian Rides Again, and Carol Smith Walker, famed children's writer who tells how she came to write her best seller--Three Little Pigs. Bill Thomas gives a personal account of his latest big game hunt in the Yukon. Entering late is the tycoon James Kilgore, still quoting figures to his smart, shapely sec- retary, Louise Danner. Still another latecomer is Billy Stout, better known as Lover Boy Billy. The closing event which climaxes the evening is singing by the group of Auld Lang Syne and all agreed to meet the next year.
