NE DELIVER USS ELKHORN (AOG-7)

Page 6 text:

PROLOGUE The words and pictures that follow can only give an impression of life aboard the ELK- HORN. Pages reflecting the haze-gray, die- sel-Navy bean existence, all seven months of it, may help us to realize that our cruise had its memorable moments. Scattered through the many weeks of unglamorous treks from Da Nang ' s busy harbor to the isolation of Cua Viet, were the moments of laughter and fun in Subic Bay and Hong Kong. In contrast to the stormy weather, the work, and the monotony, was the laugh- ter during the tug-o-war. How long is seven months; long enough for some to grow up a little, long enough to miss home very much, long enough for ELKHORN to complete her twenty-sixth year of continuous active service. But a short time indeed realizing that 1943, the year of the ship ' s commissioning, Betty Grable was a mere twenty-seven. Ask any old salt about Betty Grable when she wasn ' t fifty- four. She delivered. Ask any old salt about ELKHORN when she wasn ' t twenty- seven. They both survive; Betty with her legs intact, ELKHORN with ensign flying, sail- ing a fragile world covered by the seven seas, still steaming and delivering for peace that may lie just over the horizon.
