IN THE BEGINNING As rs thc case of all worthv enterprrses Elkhart Hugh School began rts career rn an exceedrnglx small way The frrst hrgh school was held rn the old post offrce burldrng Prot Sam Yaggy was then the teacher of both the 8th grade and Hrgh School There were nrne rn the hrgh school and about twenty rn the Sth grad Thrs made the work comparatrvely easy for the teacher The prrncrpal amusements for the students were DARE Base Blackman and Run for your supper The Hrgh School students of today wrll lrkelr be embarrassed to learn that the students before them were so Tomboyrsh rn therr sport but nevertheless these games were hrghlxil enroyed by all Of course rt rs to be understood that they were all Pres res The hrgh school was moxed the latter part of the frrst year to thc new school house Prof Yaggv then began to tram the grrls and boys rn Basket Ball and Volley Ball However lrttle progre s w s made the irrst year for the grrls and boys preferred to play Base ball b cause they were more famrlrar wrth the game The upper story of the school house was not frnrshed untrl the sum nrer before school opened the next year Prof H J Dax rs was Sup rrn tendent the second year of hrgh school Thrs year they were the proud possessors of another teacher Thrs fatt made the students realrze thev were adx ancrng all the tlme and created a deslre to make the school lrkc the others hence the grrls lengthened therr dresses and abandoned the old game of Blackman whrle the bows traded therr ox eralls for cord urovs Mrss Florence Rrchards assrsted Mr Dans She was better known as Mrss Never Smrle The thrrd year Prof Davrs boosted athletrcs and track work rn everv way Although he could not be rn actron wrth the boys he was always there to lead the rootrng There were two others besrdes Super rntendent they were E A Squrre and Ellen Danrels Mr Squrre who was known as the Agrrculture Krng always preached Bordeaux Mrxture and when asked what book he lrked best he would always say Prgs rs Prgs It was durrng thrs year that E H S made a record rn Basket Ball and track whrch rs no easy matter to excel Furthermore the hrgh school gave plays and pard for the prano whrch rs now rn the hrgh school burldrng In the fall of 1920 the destrny of Elkharts hrgher educatron was placed rn the hands of Supt R L Jewell He came rnto E H S lrke a lrve wrre and rs strll here helprng to keep the school sprrrt rn the heart of the students Jewell rntroduced Irootbrll rnto the school thrs was the means of at tractrng a great many new students and the enrollment was larger than ex er before The present year marks a greater change than ex er Now the Hrglr School rs occupyrng The Four Bungalows whrle the grades are rn pos sessron of the old burldrng P Sl E THREE 1 I , I 1 1 1 I'1 1 ' I ' ' I I I S I I, 1 I .
