Well, I arrived in Elk Rapids from Gwelo, Rhodesia in February 1976. Rhodesia is a country the size of Califor- nia and is 12,000 miles away in Central Africa. Over this past year it has been in the forefront of political news and maybe a few more people now realize that Africa is not all Tarzan and .Iung1e!!!! Although it is civilized, I still encountered many dif- ferences, the first being snow-which I had never seen be- fore. School is a lot different from school in Rhodesia. I really enjoyed the opportunity to take subjects like Art, Forensics, and Debate which I had never taken in Rho- desia. Not having to wear a school uniform took a little getting used to and I'd spend I5-20 minutes every morn- ing deciding what to wear!!! And although I didn't score, I was really proud to be on the girl's basketball team which did so well this year. V I have really enjoyed my year in America and I will have many happy memories to take home with me. Jill Chaloner Rhodesian Exchange Student Twelfth Month in USA I want to tell of my visit here in the United States. This visit is of great importance to me because what I learn here will serve me all of my life. I like the United Statesg it is a nice country. Elk Rapids, Michigan is a small city with nice people. This is the first time I have ever seen snow. I did like snow for awhile, but the cold was strange, because in my city it is very hot. I like high school in Elk Rapids. I don't know why I like high school here because I really don't in Brasil. I think it is because the students change classrooms instead of the teachers as it was in Brasil. I liked the two families I stayed with for they are very nice people. I have two brothers who are also exchange students. They have the same opinion I have of the United States. We love our own country first, but we liked United States a lot. To be an exchange student is a good experience be- cause you learn new habits and customs of another coun- try. I have had problems with speaking American English, however, I do enjoy being an exchange student very much.
