ra, WWQ ZQQ ZW - HIGH CHOOL HI TORY l lx Cllh had its beginning uuu territorial davs in the year 1900 when the luttle frontier town w as known bv the name of Bush fhus wm- soon changed to ls lk K utv un honor of Flk River an old and prominent and ut w as improved from tunue to time as the town organization grad ually became more and more firmly established 'nie original building was destrov ed by fire and the three now in use were immediate lv erected Emerson Building better known as Central was constructed un 1907 and t e two ward buildings Brvant nd longfellow the following year It u difficult to state at what time the hugh school had uts beginning sunce ut us of course an obuect of growth The records show that the first graduate f dwun C Davis received his diploma un I90D In keeping with the hugh ideals of our cutulerushup Elk Cutv Hugh School was among the furst un the state to be recognized bv Oklahoma University and its graduates given full admission to that unstututuon w uthout examination According to the tandards of the time the curriculum included a purely literary course English Hustorv the Abstract 5cuences Mathematics and foreign Languages atm German and Spanish ln fact the lumuted space available for the high school at Q entral Building permitted no room for laboratorv work ln response to the increasing en r llment and the demands for a modern course of studv the hugh school was transferred un September 191 J to Bryant Building and although that structure was orugunallv designed for ward school purposes a step w as taken tow ard bringing the course of study abreast v uth the tumes Practical 'Xuzruculture Domestc Science Domestic Art Manual Train rug and Teachers WI raining Couir es were added while a number of subjects of less um portance were either drorped or relegated to a secondarv posutuon Flhe hugh school has for five years occupied this ward structure. but at the opening of the ensuing school year it together with all the grade., v 'ill be moved into the new' building now' in process of construc- tion said by experts to be the most complete of its kind in the state. The standards of our schools have met every test to which they have ever been sub- iected. Pupils coming from larger systems of the state and nation have found our courses fully as difficult as the corresponding courses in the schools from which they came. while no one has ever been know'n to go elsewhere and fail to maintain the grade assigned to him here. Our graduates have invariably maintained a record in the higher institutions fully commensurate with that previously maintained in the Elk Ciity High School. In fact a count amon gthe freshmen condcted in the Lniversity of fxklahoma ha sshown that our graduates were making higher grades than those of any other school in the western half of he state.
