Mrs. Lila E. Keiser, Chairman Sophomore nursing students looking for the “unknown” in a N U RSI N G microbiology class. The Associate Degree Nursing program was activated at Elizabethtown Community College in the Fall of 1965. This pro- gram in nursing education is generally established as an integral part of a Community College and the Community College System of the University of Kentucky now has seven such programs. The Associate Degree program is complete for its own purpose and is not equivalent to the first two years of a baccalaureate program. Graduates are prepared to give care to patients as beginning general duty nurses, drawing upon their scientific know- ledge and understanding of human behavior and needs. They are prepared to develop satisfactory relationships with people, to cooperate and share responsibility for their patients’ welfare with other members of the nursing and health staff, and to be self directive in learning from experience as practicing nurses. Pictured at right are several Sophomore nursing students doing re- search in the Hardin Memorial Hospital Library, one of the clinical laboratories used by the students. Mrs. Julia Robinson, a nursing instructor, is in the background. 22

BUSINESS А student interested in earning a baccalaureate degree in business may complete his freshman and sophomore years at Elizabethtown Commu- nity College and then transfer to any college or university. The require- ments parallel with the University of Kentucky's but can readily be adapted to any college's requirements. In business there is a definite need for employees at the technical or semiprofessional level. The Management Technology program at ECC is designed to prepare students for employment at the junior management level. The curriculum includes general education courses in addition to the business courses. There are four options in the Management Technology program- data processing, agriculture business, accounting, and the general option—which give the students an opportunity to select the area in which they are most interested. After completing the two-year program, the students are awarded an Associate Degree of Applied Science. 21

The overall standards and policies of Elizabethtown Community College apply to the program in nursing. The Asso- ciate Degree program is designed to fulfill the educational needs of qualified high school graduates (or those holding a high school equivalency diploma) (1) who want to prepare for nursing in a relatively short time and (2) who want to study in a multi-purpose collegiate institution where they share the responsibilities, privi- leges, intellectual and social experiences with all the other studen Students of nursing meet the requirements of Elizabethtown Community College and its nursing program for admission, con- tinuation, and graduation. Instruction in all areas of the curriculum, including the Arts ts. and Sciences is provided by College faculty members. The nursing faculty plans, organizes, and implements the nursing courses; the nursing instructors select, supervise, and evaluate all learning experiences including those in the various clinical practice areas. 23
