BUSINESS AND OFFICE EDUCATION The Business and Office Edu- cation program, provides a two- year experience which includes both business and general educa- tion. The goal of the Profession- al Secretaryship program is to pre- pare students to perform with proficiency the many and varied duties of a secretary. Courses in shorthand, typewriting, office machines, filing and accounting are emphasized. During the fourth semester, the students are enrolled in an internship program which provides actual on-the-job training. Upon completion of this two-year program, the students are awarded Associate Degrees in Applied Science. Also, students have the option to pursue a baccalaureate degree. They may complete their first two-year's study at Elizabethtown Community College and then transfer to a four-year institution to finish their major in business education, business administration, or arts and sciences.

In addition to being essential to the physical sciences and engineer- ing, its influence is felt in the fields of business, biological science, and social science. For this reason, all students in these fields of study must take a prescribed sequence of courses in mathematics. However, mathematics should not be thought of as just a “tool,” for it is a science in its own right. As an elective, a mathematics course is a worthwhile and challenging experience, and is a good exercise for the mind.

BUSINESS А student interested in earning a baccalaureate degree in business may complete his freshman and sophomore years at Elizabethtown Commu- nity College and then transfer to any college or university. The require- ments parallel with the University of Kentucky's but can readily be adapted to any college's requirements. In business there is a definite need for employees at the technical or semiprofessional level. The Management Technology program at ECC is designed to prepare students for employment at the junior management level. The curriculum includes general education courses in addition to the business courses. There are four options in the Management Technology program- data processing, agriculture business, accounting, and the general option—which give the students an opportunity to select the area in which they are most interested. After completing the two-year program, the students are awarded an Associate Degree of Applied Science. 21
