i | | FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT HISTORY The subject of history is at the very center of a liberal arts curricu- lum. Basic to many fields in Arts and Sciences is an understanding of man's struggle and his accomplish- ments. Elizabethtown Community College offers surveys of American History and European History in addition to a number of more specialized history courses in the belief that an intelligent under- standing of the complexities of civilization is vital for intellectual maturity. The Modern Foreign Language Department at Elizabethtown Com- munity College offers the first four semesters of French, German and Spanish. As a branch of the liberal arts curriculum, one of the funda- mental aims of language study is to broaden and deepen the students acquaintance with the world about him through the medium of language and literature. Facilities at ECC include a modern laboratory with thirty listening and fifteen re- cording stations. The student who offers two high school units of a foreign language may register for the first semester of the intermediate course if he scores satisfactorily on a placement test at the time of registration.

time HUMANITIES In the class Music in Western Civilization, students learn to listen to records so that they can understand how melody, rhythm, and harmony fit together to give the music meaning. At the same time they learn to recognize the composers and styles of great music from the various periods of music history. The greatest art of Western Civilization, projected in color on a 10 X 15 foot screen, gathers the attention of students taking the Art History humanities courses. Sculpture, architecture and painting are illustrated by 35MM slides made in the world's most famous galleries and museums as the course moves forward from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, through the Gothic, Renais- sance and Baroque styles to end in the phantasmagoria of modern art. Beyond the slide lecture, students may study these works at their own leisure at the slide-study screen in the audio-visual room adjacent to the library. Detailed views and close-up analysis make available intimate knowledge of the works of master artists, sculptors and architects, and bring to the student even greater understanding and appreciation than could be achieved by first-hand examination of the original works.

Basic courses in Political Science endeavor “to provide orientation and training high in the problems of citizenship. In addition, these courses are ge fundamental to students planning to enter the fields of law, ber af social science teaching, and governmental work. Ores st at - SOCIOLOGY While a study of the past may provide the individual with perspec- tive about the present, the social complexities of society often are overwhelming. Sociology endeavors to analyze the “fundamental processes of group relationships, social organi- zations, and social behavior” and leads to a better understanding of this social environment. The College offers basic Sociology courses for students whose vocational plans in- clude law, social work, industrial relations, the ministry, planning and zoning, high school social science teaching, and various positions in public and governmental agencies.
